Hello! I'm a long time member since 2009. I was under the name of Imthepreacherswife. I shortened it a little bit. Lol I would LOVE your input on my delima. I am so indecisive! The ring in my avatar is a .90ct, GIA E color, SI1, excellent cut, polish and symmetry. The side diamonds are .25 each and G in color. They sparkle plenty as well, and I don't notice the color difference. My big question is, should I go plain, 4 prong solitaire, or leave as is? I'm a size 6.5.

I suspect going from so much finger coverage down to a .9 soli might be a bit of a shock to the system.
Maybe you could get different sides, whether that be diamonds or a colored stone.

I agree with Niel that the reduction in finger coverage might not please you. But to help you make the decision, how about buying a CZ solitaire to wear for 3-4 weeks, at least around the house even if you don't think you'd wear it "in public"?

Berricle is a reliable company that offers an extensive variety of CZ jewelry in gold-plated metal or silver & has been popular with PSers who've posted on the Fabulous Fashion Jewelry forum:
Here's a rhodium-plated, sterling silver solitaire ring with a 6 mm center CZ, set in a 4-prong head, that's currently on sale for $20.45:

But if that doesn't suit you, I bet there are other, inexpensive CZ solitaire rings to be found elsewhere, like Amazon and etsy.

You got wise advice.
My experience and my taste : three stone ring if paired with a plain wedding band, solitaire ring if stacked with diamond or precious colored stone bands.

Thank you for your reply! I do think it might be a bit of shock to my 6.5 finger size. I'm wondering if there is any way to make my shank look more delicate instead of so bold. 20220603_175822.jpg16558384135854037345438557671550.jpg

:)I do have a 1ctw diamond band that I could wear with the solitaire. ( ID Jewelry ) It may be a little too much with my .90ct.

How many pointers is your diamond band?
I usually wear a plain band with a graduated five stone diamond ring - one carat center-: I ' m also considering to put the center diamond on a solitaire setting.
I tried on my finger a one carat solitaire ring with a thin diamond band and I really loved the look; also added a dainty blue sapphire band and a dainty tsavorite band...interesting and beautiful combo, very fresh and young.

That sounds beautiful! I like plain bands as well as diamond ones. My 1ctw has 5 .20 pointers. It's simple and cute on its own. For me, it seems a bit bulky stacked.

My pros of three/five stone rings:
  • no spinning;
  • finger coverage;
  • no need of stacking with other bands;
  • mature look.

My cons of three/five stone rings:
  • the main diamond isn't the star of the show;
  • boring (to me) look.

My pros of solitaire rings:
  • putting the emphasis on the diamond;
  • stacking with different bands and creating different looks;
  • fresh (to me) look.

Cons if I decide to put my center diamond in a solitaire mounting :
  • spinning issues;
  • cost of getting a new setting;
  • cost of getting thin diamond bands and a couple of precious colored stone bands.
My advice: as other PSers suggested, buy a cheap solitaire ring and then write your pros/cons list.

I got you: also my ten pointer diamond band is too much with an one carat solitaire ring.

I really like dainty looking rings for myself, so I think I might be satisfied if I had a thinner shank and head. The head is platinum and the shank is heavy 14kt....not dainty.

My ideal 3 stone has a total side stone carat weight of at least the center stone.
All stones on the same level with some tilt away from the center.
what you have IMHO is a solitaire already.

Thank you so much for your opinion! I see what you mean. The sides are only accents to the solitaire. I think if only the shank were not so chunky, it would feel more like a solitaire.

You're a great help. Your pros and cons are right on point. I'm a little older, 56, so I guess I would fit under the mature category lol.

I do love the idea of pear sides!!!!

Half a century here...

I also contemplated the pear side option...it seems we both went through the same dilemma.

Why don't you take your ring to a skilled jeweller and ask if they could shave down the shank and the head? Worth trying because it should be cheaper than getting a new setting.

That’s a nice shank and changing it will not achieve the look that you are after. If your heart is set on a new setting, it’s simple enough to do. You can keep your 3 stone setting for when you want that look again.

Yes, it sure would!

Ooooh, I love the setting on that one!

We are the same ring size — I think your ring looks great! Could not tell exactly what you are trying to improve but it sounds like you want a less bold, more delicate look. In that case a 3-stone with a 0.90 middle is probably still going to look bling in your eyes even with a thinner shank. Agree with others to get a CZ to test a solitaire look. For a little more money you could get a moissanite test solitaire ring. You might find you like it, and end up with another ring to wear on occasion. :)

If you put your 0.90 in a solitaire for a few years but eventually miss the coverage of the three stone, you could do like @nala said and keep the old setting and switch back. Other options depend on budget, but if you happen to have the option of saving money for the purpose of spending it on jewelry, you could reset your 0.90 in a solitaire now, keep the 3-stone setting, then save up for a while and replace the 0.90 center with a colored gem, or a smaller diamond, or a diamond of the same size — you could think about either of those last options in lab diamond, too.

I am in kind of the opposite situation where I wish my 3 stone had more coverage. But I don’t care to wear blingier stuff on a daily basis. So instead of upgrading I am going to keep my little 3-stone ring and wait until I can afford another one. I have 2/3 diamonds and just need to save up for the third. :)

I already have this setting that I only used shortly a few years ago. I thought about setting my diamond in it, but I remember now why I didn't keep my diamond in it. It's just not my style. I'm plain and simple I guess. Here is a stock photo.FB_IMG_1646097567270.jpg

You are so sweet for the compliment and great suggestions. I have a loose .50 ct round... Are there any jewelers that would let you trade your GIA diamond for let's say a pear shape without doubling the price?

I forgot to say. I love your ring. It's unique and delicate looking!

I love the three stone look! It sounds like you are wanting a daintier piece - do you think it's the stones or the band / shank that are throwing you? I have a super super thing band on my ring and I feel that it offsets the stones nicely, but you may feel otherwise! This is my first version of my ring - before the center stone was switched out to a slightly longer one: https://www.instagram.com/p/CVvGb6ZvDi5/

That is truly breathtaking! I love everything about it!
