Hello. Is there a standard formula for figuring this out. For example, if your center stone is 1 carat, should the sidestones be a certain percentage of that size?

Thanks!

Hi!

I *just* went through this in making my three-stone ring. Here''s a helpful thread that shows side stone to center proportion:

I think I ended up with a radio of, like, 68%, which I love.

Hope that helps!

It''s really just a matter of preference. I''d probably try for just under .5 each, but some people like the sidestones even smaller than that. I think if you go larger, the side stones will compete with the center stone.

Thanks!

It helps to see different sizes in person if you have a chance to browse some brick and mortar jewelry stores. My three stone ring has a 1.24 carat center and .50 carat each sidestones and I really like the proportions. For me with a 1.0 carat center I would go between .25 and .50 each for the sidestones. The setting also has a visual impact. Some three stone rings have the sidestones set an angles to the center stone and others are set more in a row with the center stone. The more rings you can look at the better.

In a three stone, I prefer a 3:1 ratio. If the center stone is 1 carat, I like the side stones to be around a third of a carat. If the center stone is 1.5, I''d prefer the side stones around a half. I think most of the premade are on a 2:1 ratio. (meaning the side stones add up to the center carat weight).

and, since you''re looking at three stones, I just saw a really neat design. It was at a custom jeweler. The settings were DOUBLE basketed. It sounds like it would stand up very high, but it was really pretty.

Looking forward to Pics!!

i agree that the angle of the sidestones has as much to do with visual affect as the size of them does. if it were my ering and the center was 1 ct, i would want them no bigger than .25 so that they highlight the center stone and wouldn't be in danger of making it look a little clunky or like an anniversary ring. it's just a matter of preference and the kind of ring you are going for!

All good advice here.....

My 3 stone ring has a 1.5 center with .44 side stones (each). I did not want my ring to look like an ER since it is an anniversary band and I wear it w/o a wedding band (in effect, it is my wedding band).

I thought I wanted bigger side stones but opted for a larger center with smaller sides, as I felt that if I ever upgraded, it would be much easier to upgrade the side stones (price wise). I am so glad I went with the smaller stones - they make the center pop, but they are substancial in their own right.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I wear a 3-stone - center is 1.24 with sides of .30 each. I could easily have gone to .25 each, but I don''t think I''d like to go larger than the .30s.

I prefer to keep the center stone as the ''main attraction''.

I have a three stone ring.
1.5 center with 1ct sides.
I really like all three stones so close in size (but I think that is just my preference, not really the norm).

I have been told that if your side stones are too close to the size of the center, it takes away from the impact your center stone makes.

If you want to highlight the center stone, then I think 1/2 or 1/4 the size of the center is a good proportion.
