I''ve been lurking and learning from everyone for quite some time and I hope you don''t mind a career question. Tiffany & Co. is opening their first store in my city this November and I can''t stop thinking about working as a sales professional. Currently I''m the sales manager for a well known home builder, but I''d love a career change and I''ve always enjoyed learning about gems and jewelry.

Do any of you know if Tiffany & Co. only hires GIA graduates? If so and I go ahead and get my GG, is it very competitive to be hired by Tiffany as a sales professional? Is the position salary plus commission? What does an average sales professional earn? I''ll appreciate any tips or information that you can give.

Hi I was just in there yesterday and sorta asked some of these questions.

On being a GG - no most stores only have 1 on staff.

SA receive 30% discount and 50% at certain times of the year!

That should be reason enough to get a job there!

I think if u come across as knowledgeable they would hire u.

The SA and cust. serv. rep. asked if I was in the trade or wanted to be

I happened to know more about their specs/stock on a particular item than either one of them.

Oh and for Tiff''s owner''s on West Coast they are removing all polishing machines. Apparently they are dangerous and costly to maintain.

So all polishing has to get sent to NY - total bummer.

Me too because I seriously thought about working there the last time I visited and the SA said they get a good discount. My eyes popped out when I thought of all the things I could buy.

I don''t think they work on commissions. I think salaried.

Sounds like you can move around a lot in the co.

I would aspire to become a personal shopper - she was a GG and all she did was help unsuspecting couple buy e-rings, alllll dayyyyy looonnnggg!

Also she got to hang in the back b/c I really do hate retail even if it is diamonds

What''s the company''s minimum time commitment? Y''know, how many hours does one have to work...before one becomes eligible for the discount?

Could I work there one day a month?
 
Everyone''s comments about enjoying the discounts are so true. I think I could practice restraint though - need to eat and pay the mortgage ;)

I''m still wondering what the average pay for a sales professional at Tiffany & Co. is?!?! I think they have a base salary plus commission, but I''m not sure. Also, will they help pay for GIA courses? Are there any Tiffany employees on Pricescope?
 
lisa1.01fvs1 - thanks for the link to HappyDay''s post and experience. Her collection is gorgeous! I really wouldn''t be working for the discount - sure it would be nice, but I need to make a living :)

Someone recently told me that if you work at Tiffany & Co. they have a strict policy about only wearing Tiffany jewelry while working. They said if your engagement ring isn''t a Tiffany you''d have to leave it at home. They also said that you have to buy a Tiffany watch at the start of employent. Anyone know if this is true?
 
Don''t think any of this is true.

No one was wearing a watch and several girls were wearing non-T e-rings.

I guess they honor the 1st amendment.

Ok, I called aTiffany store and spoke with the sales manager. She was very nice and she said that you do not need to have GIA coursework to work as a sales professional, but it would be helpful. She confirmed that sales professionals have a base salary + commission and she explained that you can wear any engagement ring or religious jewelry, but other jewelry does need to be Tiffany. For me, that is all good news!
 
I take it that wearing a non-Tiffany engagement ring also means you can wear a non-Tiffany wedding band?

I''d be really disappointed not to get to wear earrings.

Oh, Lisa, I''d do 2 or 3 hours a month...for the 50% discount. That''d still give me 40 hours a week to pursue gainful employment.

I could always think of those other 40 hrs/week as time spent aggregating resources -- so I can get more with my 50% discount.

Or maybe I should just become a diamond broker so I can buy wholesale. Now that I think about it, I don''t really need the brand. I just need the goods.
 
I think with *most* jobs in the US you must put in two full-time shift''s worth of hours to remain on payroll. In retail, for example, I had to work 16 hours a month, and I have a friend who is a nurse that must work 20 hours a month (2 -10 hour shifts... poor nurses work such long hours) to stay on the payroll. Hope this helps.
 
I think it would be awesome to work at Tiffany. I even thought about it more than once. But traffic to our Tiffany from my house is insane.....

The discount is definitely a plus

Did you get an idea of what either of those numbers (salary and commission percentage) are?
 
Working in the jewelry industry does have some downsides. I''ve done it. You usually have a monthly sales quota that you must hit, if you fall below it they begin having "discussions" with you and it can lead to your losing your job if you consistently miss your quotas over a period of time. This could be an issue in a recession. Also, keep in mind that a retail job (although Tiffany may well be different) usually requires work on evenings, weekends and some holidays. Also, most places require you to work a minimum number of hours or have worked there for a minimum time to qualify for employee discounts. I''m not sure working one day a month would qualify. Also, Tiffany would set your schedule; it probably is not worth their while to hire and train someone to work only a few days a month. They must pay all sorts of social security and other taxes, so usually they try to get people that will work for more hours than that.
 
Yeah but what about being their on-site GG. The personal shopper who helps helpless couples purchse e-rings and WB?

That sounds very intriguing! They probably have a quota too but the chances fall more in their direction to meet them.

And they are behind the scenes checking repairs, etc. as well.
 
I was just kidding...of course T&Co isn''t going to let me work there 2 hours a month and give me a discount.
