I wonder what you guys think of a pink (or blue? or yellow?) sapphire Legacy ring from Tiffany as an engagement ring. I don''t particularly love the setting with a diamond, but it comes to life with a splash of color. I know that sapphires were originally very popular e-ring stones b/c they symbolize faithfulness, but do people often go with colored stones as e-rings nowadays? If so, how do you make them work when you wear clashing clothing? Does it not matter? Anyone have any great pics of this ring or know of any that anyone is selling? Thanks in advance!

I think that would be lovely and unusual. How do you think your SO would feel about it? Some people want tradition, some don''t. I worked with a woman that had a huge sapphire engagement ring in a bezel setting. It was stunning. It depends on what makes you both happy! Good luck- can''t wait to hear what you decide! Congrats too!

Hugs,

I think it would be stunning :) A beautiful ruby also would look YUM IMO

It would be beautiful, please let us know what you decide.

Oh, I think it is a great idea! The legacy is so gorgeous with colored stones! You should find out first if your intended is comfortable with the idea of a colored stone engagement ring

ETA -- I have a yellow sapphire engagement ring and it goes great with everything I wear, I never have a problem with that.
As for where to get one, you can get an authentic legacy with a sapphire from Tiffanys or you can get a reproduction from a jeweler (I think Whiteflash and Leon Mege have both done them).

Ditto to everything everyone said already and I cannot see a setting like that clashing with anything. In fact, a friend of mine has a sapphire & diamond engagement ring, which she wears with everything. Though gem stone e-rings are not uncommon, just be sure you both are OK with it.

Thanks to everyone for their input! And thank you for the congratulations! My SO loves the idea of the sapphire b/c of what it represents, but I''m not sure he likes the Legacy (a little to elaborate for his streamlined taste). Thing is, I wear gloves to work, and I was thinking of getting, as my man calls it, a "stunt ring", like a used smaller Etoile, but that complicates things as far as deciding which one is my actual engagment ring. I love love love the Etoile, but I just don''t want my job to limit my choices. I guess I could always get the Legacy in color for an anniversary gift down the line, but why must a girl wait? :) Is it silly to have two rings, one for work and one for play? I just wouldn''t feel comfortable not wearing a ring at all at work, you know?

My grandmother has an emerald with diamond sidestones as her e-ring.

My mother has a sapphire with diamond sides for hers, as does my sister.

I have a tsavorite with diamond melee for my e-ring, and I''m doing a haloed tsavorite e-ring for a friend at the moment.

Most of the British Royal Family have coloured e-rings.

I never wanted a diamond - I''ll NEVER be bored with my coloured beauty, I find something new to love about it everyday - and it''s totally unique.

Absolutely, there''s tons of great colored stone e-rings around here, check out the colored stone eye-candy thread! I have a three-stone sapphire/diamond ring, with a round sapphire center. I love the look of the legacy with a colored stone, and in fact, was drooling over a sapphire one in Tiffany last year, but there''s so many other options if you want something a little lower-profile for work. Anyway, have fun looking!

I could so see that setting with a magnificent blue sapphire in it. I say: Go for it!

ITA. A lovely cushion shaped sapphire would be stunning in that setting!

I bet the legacy with a sapphire would be beautiful (I have seen a yellow sapphire, I believe, and aquamarine). I would love it with a blue sapphire...however, would it show off the cut? Not sure, but would love to follow your search for a ring!!!!

I love gemstones... sapphires are one of my favorites; I think it would be gorgeous in that setting!

If you get a glove-friendly band, you could take off the ering for work and leave the band on. Though, with that surprise diamond on the Legacy, not sure a band could be worn with it unless you had a similar one made custom that could accommodate a band.

Or you could get a sapphire/diamond band to wear as a RHR when you wear your ering and move it to your left when you don''t.

I would sooooo love an emerald ring as an e-ring...I let my now DH know that very early into our relationship but he was more diamond-minded and got me my current RB and diamond wedding band...but if I'd had my way it would've been a 2 ct. EC emerald flanked with diamond baguettes or traps set in platinum and a plain plat. band. Soooo, I suggest to you to get a color stone e-ring, and that etoile style wedding band so you can wear the WB everyday under your gloves and wear the e-ring any other time you please.

ETA: oh, and I'm American, lol!

Does anyone here know what types of colored gems the Tiffany Legacy comes in?

Iknow they come in pink/blue Saphires
Aquamarines
Citrines

Any other colors???

Thanks,

I know they also come in Yellow Sapphires, Green Tourmaline, and I tried a Tanzanite one on the other day

Monarch: You may be onto something there! Then I can have BOTH the etoile and the Legacy!

I will keep you updated! Still deciding what to do (my boyfriend is partial to designing something, so we''ll see. I kind of like the idea of something simple and classic that won''t make me say "What was I thinking?!" 15 years from now. Or worse, since I am sooo picky about how jewelry looks, that I''ll hate how it turns out and then get stuck with it.)

I think that ring would be stunning with a saphire as and ering. I have a ruby ering and I think its perfect. It took awhile to convince DH that it was ok to not have a diamond. I loved the legacy ring, but ended up having a ring custom made.

Have fun with your search!

Please tell your fiance to be that it is YOU who will wear this ring and you need to pick out what you like! We have seen some disasters on here with guys designing rings on their own. Now you coudl safely send him to Leon Mege, I imagine, since we know you like the Legacy! Other than that, I''d say forget the designing himself, because custom rings cannot be returned.

I think the Legacy with a sapphire would be gorgeous!!! And there is nothing wrong with having an alternate wedding band for work!

Did someone mention sapphires and a legacy style ring?
a beautiful combination in my opinion - we had ours made by Quest, a highly recommended jeweler on this site.

My wife loves how her wband lines up flush against her ering on her finger.

Some differences w/ the Tif version include custom engraving on the sides of the band, a phrase engraved on the inside of the ering. Also Pete at Quest makes the ring with holes (for cleaning) under the wband diamonds which Tiffany does not - I don''t know how much of a difference it makes though =)

Also of course, being custom, it was built to fit our stone, our ring size and our specifications.

A legacy with any colored stone would be a breath taking ring - I''ve yet to see a ruby one but that would be quite lovely as well.

By George, I think they got it! Very nicely done. Folks here have commented how other rings don't quite get the Tiffany Legacy look but that's very close, isn't it. It's also a good example of how you don't need a 5-7 carat sapphire to have a very substantial sapphire ring. It would be rude to ask but I'm sitting here wondering how much the setting costs (not sapphire) at Quest vs. Tiffany vs. LM.

not rude at all, this being pricescope right?

i don't quite remember without the paperwork in front of, and this was from 2 yrs ago just before gold and plat prices began to increase sharply. The setting itself was about $1600 or so (which included a discount since I had both rings made together), size 3, 1 ptr melee, 925 plat. Since the ring fairly detailed and pretty small a lot of that cost is labor.

The smallest tiffany legacy I saw while shopping around at the same time was about a size 4 (the smallest they make and carry in stock), mounted with a .25 or .3 ct diamond (i forget the diamond specs - but it looked perfect on her finger, so perfect I was almost tempted to go the easy route and buy it

), and that ran about $5700 or $6000, then add tax. I'm not well versed in diamond prices, so you can subtract the approx cost of such a diamond and get a close estimate of the setting w/ tif markup.

LM, from what I've read would probably cost you more than both of the above combined =)
Of course you'd also have to factor in the fact that once you commission him, he's off to make the setting as he sees fit. So if you like his style, then great, but otherwise I'm not sure how Legacy-like an LM would be since I find the two styles fairly different.

I think the other thing about the legacy is that the look that most people are enamored with is the profile, and for the proportion and curves to be right, you have to get the right finger size to gemstone size/halo size ratio correct. I spent a lot of time trying to determine the right sapphire size and doing the math trying to make sure that based on her finger size, that the final halo would be the correct size. We pretty much hit the minimum halo width that quest could do given the size of the melee + milligrain. I kept trying to get Pete to squeeze the halo narrower and narrower hehe. Fortunately he did end up agreeing that 1 ptrs would be better than 1.5 ptrs for the halo. We couldn't go smaller as he said .5 ptrs would get lost in the bead prongs.

Londonblue, these are some of the most beautiful pieces I''ve seen. I love both rings equally!

QueenG: As other have said, go for it!

What gorgeous rings! Dare I say i like them even BETTER than the Tiffany ones?

Those truly are some of my favorite rings on here, Londonblue! What are the dimensions and weight of your sapphire?

I really appreciate the info, londonblue. That is a great result and has to be one of the best quality/price ratios I''ve seen here, which is quite an accomplishment given all the nice rings.
