Tiffany's Channel Set Round Engagement Ring - Help

Lots of vendors have their 'brand' of top stones - SuperbCert is no different. I'm sure they would work with you to find your perfect stone.

That said, you can ask Tiffany's to bring in other stones in the range you are interested in and plug those numbers into the HCA. I think they grade their own diamonds but apparently their grading process is fairly strict.

Last but not least, buy the stone that your eyes love the best. Tiffany's would not have been in business since the 1800's if they were selling ugly stones. Their markup is very high but sometimes you have to go with what you want and just bite the bullet on the price.

Sorry for my ignorance. Whats the HCA?

It's the Holloway Cut Advisor. You can find it by clicking on Tools at the top of the page and clicking on HCA. You put in depth, table, crown and pavillion angles and it gives you a score. You're looking for stones that score a 2 or below. It is not for a selection process but rather a tool for weeding out possible poor contenders. It is very helpful in determing the stones you would want to consider.

Tiffany's should be able to give you these numbers on their stones as well. Search around the different vendors for stones and put the numbers in so you can get familiar with the process.

Thank you all for offering advice and input. This is a great community with nothing but positive feedback and I really appreciate it. I'm struggling with the idea of buying that really nice replica from excel, knowing if there is an issue with sizing I have to ship it back, it looks like that's an additional charge etc. Could take a few weeks to get it as well. I really love the benefit of picking the exact center stone I want at a cheaper price online. I know Tiffanys you can have a big selection to chose from as well, but will I be getting that signature ideal cut that I want? I'm not sure how their cut measures up to blue nile, and the other sites as far as the signature ideal. It just seems like it could be a potential hassle dealing with an online source for this "custom" setting. Does Tiffanys give you any hassle if you need it re sized, etc? This is frustrating the hell out of me and definitely turning what should be an exciting time into a rather stressful one for me. I'm 100% sold on the way the channel setting looked on her finger. I dont want to include her in this process any more by having her try on some other retailers settings as she knows the time is soon and I dont want to take away from the surprise I've got planned as far as when. I know I'll feel confident if I get it from Tiffanys as far as it's going to look great and everything fit well and be convenient if we need it adjusted etc. I won't have buyers remorse about that. But it will bug me a bit that I didn't get the best possible center stone for the price. Anything larger than 1.1 or so looked way too big on her and she agreed looked gaudy. So it's really just a matter of the cut, the clarity, and the color where I can improve on from Tiffanys...

Thanks for letting me vent. I'd love to see pictures if anyone has the excel diamond replica. I saw a few on here who had that Tiffanys channel set, and to me, it's the perfect combo of classy & sparkly!

Could you just buy the Tiffany setting and buy a better diamond through a PS vendor? This way you get the setting you truly want and pick your ideal stone. I'm not sure if Tiffany will set other diamonds so you may have to find a local jeweler to set it. You'll get her dream ring but still save some dollars.

Hi Geisha_gyrl,

I asked on this forum many years back if it was possible to buy a setting from Tiffanys & a center stone somewhere else and have them set together, but from what I was told, Tiffanys won't just sell their setting. I never confirmed it with Tiffanys, but it makes sense that they wouldn't. Based on how much they markup diamonds, I'm sure a load of people would only buy their setting and get a better/bigger/cheaper diamond elsewhere. With that being said I've decided to go with the excel diamonds replica setting. I've read a few reviews here and seen some pictures, and I'm trusting it will be nearly identical and just stunning. As soon as I complete the entire purchase and have the ring in hand, I plan to write a long review on my experience, along with multiple pictures to share with the community.

Thanks

I'm glad to hear that you've decided to go with the Excel replica. I've never bought from them but I have emailed and they've been wonderful to deal with. There has also been a lot of happy people who've bought from there and loved the product. They have amazing stones as well and I can't wait to see the final product! Congrats!

Yes I've been in contact with Judah at excel diamonds for the last two weeks and he has been an absolute pleasure to communicate with along with being very accommodating. I'll save my full review until the purchase is completed and I have the ring in hand. But everything so far has been perfect. I can't wait to get the final product in a few weeks and I will be sharing photos here ASAP!

I have a Tiffany ring (solitaire) and several bands. I agree for such a basic setting it can be easily replicated. I do like the customer service Tiffanys provides. And the selection of the ring was easy- beautiful and not much thought required.

I am continually amazed by the people who walk into the Tiffany rings with replica solitaires and mention that they have sales reps fawning over them and offering free cleanings/servicing. I see this posted alot (here and on wedding boards). I have several (authentic) Tiffany pieces, and when I walk into the store, don't experience this. LOL. You need to go to customer service for a cleaning and they record the serial number of the ring (inscribed on the inside) before they take it for cleaning. And if it is anything other than a diamond, they will charge you.

I think you'll be very pleased with the result. Can't wait to see the ring!

Going to be placing the order in the next few days, I was curious regarding the actual prongs. I've noticed if you follow the link to images of the setting there are two prong types. Some look more like claws, others like stubs. Is it purely a matter of cosmetic preference?

I'm not sure which I like best I was told I could have either. Any opinions?

Look at photo 8 & 14

It's personal preference but if you want to have something a little "different" I'd go with the claw prongs. If you do a search (or just look in the SMTB jewelry you lust over thread you'll see the claw prongs IRL examples). Either one is going to look good though.

Can't wait to see the final product! :naughty:

I definitely like the claw prongs better - just so they're not too long.

Decisions...decisions! I'm really in the middle I dont know what to do. Both styles look really nice in the photos to me, I have a few days to mull it over. Appreciate the posts MissGotRocks, definitely look forward to sharing the final product. I need to find some closeup photos so I can make a final decision.

The trigger has been pulled! Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread and for steering me in the direction of the excel diamonds replica setting. Once I receive the final product in a couple weeks, I will post pics and write a full review on the entire purchase process.

Congratulations - I think you and your intended are gonna love the ring!!

We'll be waiting for pictures. . .

Nod to Excel...Judah and Barry will hook you up. It's gonna look GREAT!! Congratulations!!!

For those of you looking for the Tiffany channel set engagement ring, without a doubt get it from Excel Diamonds. The ring is absolutely stunning!!! I have a few nice pictures of it, but its nearly impossible to capture it's beauty with a camera. I've even used a coworkers $2500 digital SLR and it still is a struggle to get a perfect crystal clear shot showing off all the sparkle. I posted a review on my experience that will hopefully help future Pricescopers who are looking for this same setting save a lot of money.

Please read it here:

I will post a bunch of pictures very soon! Thanks so much to everyone at Pricescope who referred me to Excel Diamonds. If you follow this thread you'll see how close I was to spending about $4,000 more at Tiffanys just because it seemed convenient at the time. Thank you!!!

Pics to follow...

Can't wait to see!!

Not to hijack this thread but this actually happend to me. I had a "lucida replica" from WF and took it to Tiffany's to have it cleaned. She took it in the back and cleaned it, and then came back and said she did it as a service but knew it wasn't a Tiffany's stone once she looked at it closer because they didn't "generally sell such a high-quality cut stone" (her words, not mine). Don't get me wrong, I LOVE me some Tiffany's jewelery but it did make me feel pretty darn good about my purchase!

Just a note on sales tax since it was brought up here multiple times. Legally, you have to declare your out of state purchase and pay the tax with your annual state income tax filing. However, most people don't do that, for obvious reasons, you really aren't being held accountable to do so.

However, states are and will continue to focus on this issue, especially California due to the budget situation here. There are states who report large purchases back to neighboring states. I would be cautious to purchase a $10k+ item in Oregon under the assumption that it won't be reported back to CA now or in the near future. If you really want to skirt the sales tax, I'd recommend buying from a vendor far away from CA, not an adjacent low-tax state like Oregon that CA would likely focus on to try and recoup lost revenue.

Eternity diamonds has a few channel sets you might like--AND they have a "try it before you buy it" feature. They mail you exact replicas of the rings you want to check out to see in person. They also do custom work (what I did), so if you see something you like and want to add to it (like a 6 prong setting instead of a 4) I'm guessing it won't be a problem. They're diamond prices are also some of the lowest.
