To halo or not to halo this Asscher?

Hello…I have been lurking here for a while and started to second guess my 5 stone setting after seeing some gorgeous Asschers in halo settings. I actually think my current setting is beautiful, I just worry that it’s too wide for my short, stubby fingers. I have contemplated a baguette halo (my jeweler actually loves this idea) but I also like settings ala Pippa Middleton’s ring. I’m incredibly indecisive and prone to buyer’s remorse…it took me well over a year to decide on this Asscher and the setting. Hoping for some insight, ideas, and inspiration! Thanks in advance. 82327B24-624C-4CB9-8943-B92B1E7D1BF2.jpeg

I love the idea of a baguette halo. I think it looks fantastic with Asschers! While your current setting is beautiful, I think for my personal preference, the baguette halo would be my pick. I would then pop a CS into your current setting so you could enjoy it as well.

Another vote for a baguette halo. I halo’ed my mom’s emerald cut with mostly baguettes and I love how it turned out!

I dunno, I really love it as is. You have to go with what makes your heart sing.

I personally think it’s beautiful as it is, but It’s all about how you feel about it. Also, you definitely don’t have short, stubby fingers! Your fingers and ring are lovely .

no halo from me
but im not a halo kind of girl
i think it is a show stopper as it is

also if this is how you indend to always wear it with the diamond band i think the combo is perfect
i think the band would be so over shadowed

but its not my ring
its yours @Italiangirl

I vote for your current setting. You’ve already got great finger coverage and a great size centre.

Id love to see a photo of your ring by itself on your finger. I wonder if the band is distracting a little from the gorgeous step cut shimmer? Maybe you could try wearing it alone to see if you enjoy it more. Or try it with something like a delicate single cut band - it would give you the sparkle of a halo but would likely be cheaper (and give more wearing options) than a reset.

Echoing everyone's comments- its very beautiful as is. At the same time, I'm a halo fan so would rarely turn that down. As others have stated, go with what makes you most happy or you may find yourself constantly changing and doubting your choices till you do.

It’s a beautiful stone but I feel it’s overwhelmed by the side stones. Maybe make a new setting with much smaller accent stones.

also go to google images and search.

I kept mine without a halo, though I do love Pippa ‘s ring. I don’t have an Art Deco aesthetic though.

at least yours looks to be a good size. Mine is 1.52 carat

Thank you, everyone! I truly appreciate the insight and ideas…it’s like you are all in my head. ;) Your comments pretty much echo my own thoughts—both for the halo and against.

I think the band is part of what throws me off. Some days I love it, some days I like it, other days it drives me crazy because it spins on my finger. It’s not my original wedding ring (thin gold band with channel set diamonds), so I am not emotionally attached to it. I went from an engagement ring with a wide gold band and cathedral setting with a round diamond to this step cut beauty. I wanted something different and unique and I have always been mesmerized by Asschers. Sometimes I miss having a wider band, sometimes I don’t. I do like having options, though, so I think I will wear just the Asscher without the band for a while and see if it changes my mind. As much as I love the combination of the two, I have wondered if the band distracts from the step cut shimmer a bit. I’m attaching a photo of just the Asscher in action (couldn’t figure out how to post a video!). Many, many thanks! I have learned so much from lurking and I’m glad I finally got the nerve to post. :)11B19073-A592-476A-8E92-1AAB8DE97AE7.png

Thank you! I have wondered if the side stones take away from the center stone. I love your setting!!! And I Google Asscher settings incessantly. ;)

What size is yours? It’s really gorgeous— I can tell you got a good one.

do you have instagram? That also is a good place to look. I also have an asscher shape emerald that I need to set and I’m trying to figure that one out too. It was between an asscher and an oval and what can I say? I’m an asscher woman.

Thank you! I’m an Asscher girl, for sure. I am mesmerized by them.

My center stone:

Square emerald
3.14
F
VVS1
8.41 x 8.40 x 5.27

I like it the way it is or...something like @whitewave posted with the rounds and a single baguette on each side. I do not like baguette halos...its just more of the same around a step-cut stone. Doesnt really add any interest to me.

Can you post a picture of the side so we can see the side stones?

I wouldn’t halo it. Some of them are very pretty but to me, it then becomes more about the ring than the center stone. You have a great size and color in that diamond - I would want to showcase it rather than make a large ring out of it.

I’m actually thinking of doing something similar to that pippa setting for my emerald asscher. I don’t have a halo ring and it’s a nice setting.

But for yours, such a great size…… free that center stone and make her the star!

I'm an Italian girl too and I love your asscher. :)

Maybe something with a little less metal? There is a haloed asscher here I've been in love with for a loooooong time:

I have thought that the side stones maybe take away from the great shape of the center stone. Wondering if setting the center stone higher would make a difference? I can easily make myself crazy waffling back and forth. I love so many different settings! Halo, no halo, side stones, solitaire. I’m a mess. Hahahaha.

Thank you! That haloed Asscher is so pretty!!!

I love a baguette halo on a step-cut colored stone -- like emerald or a less-saturated blue sapphire. Is it overkill around another diamond? Do you run the risk of making it look like those fool-the-eye small step cuts on IG with invisibly-set trapezoids all around so it "looks just like a 3-ct emerald-cut!," etc.

I could see if you had a small diamond, but with a beauty like this in a lovely ring like this, I would leave it alone.

And how would that solve the "short, stubby fingers" issue (which, btw, you do not have).

But with that, you completely lose the amazing outline of the Asscher and, with it, the whole coveted Deco vibe. I thought the point of step-cuts (and Asschers, in particular) was the crisp geometry and contrast.

EDIT: I am a bit out of my depth on this forum but that need not keep me from having strong opinions ;)2

Oh, honey, we are your people! I’m glad you found us.

I absolutely love it like this. Your band is pretty, but this lets those steps sing and your stone is large enough to be standalone. Sometimes, just sometimes, the no-expense-needed option is the best :saint:=)2
