When my mom passed away, she didn't have a will (things like that didn't/ don't get discussed as far as my parent(s) are/ were concerned, cos it's bad luck according to Asian traditions) and she had quite a few pieces of diamond jewellery. A lot of them though were given to me because they came from me originally (gifted to her), and I subsequently gave most of them to my sisters who in turn gave most of those to their own daughers.
When I go, if we still don't have any children (adopted or otherwise), all of my diamonds will go to my sisters and nieces, with one particular piece going to a close friend (I kind of promised her). My husband's family will not get any of the diamonds, they will get some money if my husband also passes away/ passes away after I do (not that they really need it). This is our current plan.
If it turned out that we had children, most of the diamonds would go to them along with the bulk of our money (everything being divided equally betwen the children and the pieces would be divided according to their monetary/ appraised values, unless someone specifically requested or expressed an interest in a piece or pieces in which case such items would go to them).
