do you do it the proper way?

(assuming that you are right handed) you would hold the knife with your right hand, and the fork with your left hand. after you cut the piece of meat, do you then switch the fork over to your right hand, then with your right hand putting the piece of meat in your mouth (the proper way) or do you just put the piece of meat in your mouth with the fork in your left hand, which would be the improper way.

Neither-I hold the knife in my left hand and eat with the fork in my right hand. I''m right-handed.

And...I usually get A-1 sauce, even at nice steak houses! I don''t care if it''s not the cool thing to do-it''s delicious and I love it!

Never thought about it, but I guess I would do it the "proper way"

I do it the proper way. My mom was a stickler for table manners when I was a kid.

Actually, DF, as far as I know, the "proper" way is only proper in the US. Most other nations of I have visited it is more polite to eat with the fork in the left hand with the tines pointing down. I am American, but I hardly think the fact that our young nation eats right-handed makes it "proper."

As for me, I vary my eating style based on where I am. If I'm on Europe I eat with the fork in the left hand. In America I eat righty.

ETA: I just consulted Tiffany's Table Manners for Teenagers, they instruct meat be eaten with the fork in the left hand, tines down.

neither...
I cut it all up first then eat it.

Munchkin - I nearly laughed out loud when I saw you consulted TTMT - that''s my go-to book for table manners stuff too, and I was just trying to find in on the website a few days ago but I think it''s out of print. Sad. It''s a winner.

DF - for what it''s worth, I switch it up. Sometimes I''ll switch hands, other times, I go the tines down left hand route. Strangely, I think it depends on how conversation is going and how long I have to chew before I''m expected to speak again.

Yes. I eat it the proper way. I also only eat rare beef. (This does not include hamburger.)

Apparently, every body (except Storm

Q.When eating meat, should you cut one piece, put your knife down, then eat the piece, or should you cut all of your meat up first, and then eat the meat?

A. When eating meat, should you cut one piece, put your knife down, then eat the piece, or should you cut all of your meat up first, and then eat the meat? When eating meat, always cut and eat one small piece at a time. If you are eating American style, you may put your knife down, switch your fork to your other hand and eat your bite. If you are eating continental style, you may cut the piece of meat and eat it without putting setting your knife on your plate. Continental Dining Style is becoming more prevalent today and is considered the preferred method of eating.

ITA, but I usually use the European way (for whatever reason

The proper way for me. And some A1 too. We are grilling steaks tonight, yummm.

Had to think about this one for a minute. I do it the proper way.

nopers I am the only one that does it the right way!

I eat European style. I find it more efficient. Efficiency-->elegance.

i eat it the improper way. i guess im either too lazy or too hungry to bother switching hands

I eat it the Proper way... but you seem to think it''s the improper way...

I eat it the improper way which I thought was the British proper way. (left hand prongs pointed down) Anyone from the UK? Who is right?

Ditto!

but in my defense, I do eat my steaks medium rare!

YUM steaks....

I never switch hands/utensils. It''s not proper etiquette. I use the knife in my right hand and the fork in my left. In France, it''s considered poor manners to switch! (Not that I live in France, but I did study French/French culture through college!)

I''m left handed and I eat my steak the semi-proper way of your directions reversed. I do switch hands to eat the piece mostly because I feel awkward putting it in my mouth with the other hand.

I guess I do it the proper way...steak sounds really yummy right now!

I eat with the fork in my left hand.

Somehow, the "proper way" (Switch the fork back and forth... ) sounds inefficient to me. but what do I know. Never learn the proper US way.

What, switch hands? Sound time inefficient!

I hold the knife in my left hand, fork in my right and then eat the steak with fork still in my right hand and knife in my left. Now that I think about it, usually I''m holding the knife in mid-air while chewing!

I usually eat it the "proper way"(as defined by DF) and DH usually eats the Continental way. I was always taught that you can cut 2 pieces at a time before eating unless its the last bit, in which case you can cut it into 3 pieces if needed.

I do it the improper way or European way. If I''m eating a good steak, I''m not wasting any time switching hands...I''m eating!

You can''t cut it all up! It gets too cold that way!

LOL! I thought I was the only one who did that. My DH actually gets after me if I do that in a restaurant.

What can I say? It''s more efficient that way? I''m a mom, and I''m still in the mode of cutting everyone else''s food? I don''t know. I don''t get out much I guess.

I eat it the proper, or European way. It is the American way that is improper.

I am left handed to begin with so this doesn''t apply as much to me, but I cut meat with my fork [tines down] in my left hand and the knife in my right. I eat all my food like this, provided that I am using both a fork and a knife. It is so much more efficient! Plus, I''ve always thought it was handy to use the knife to collect the food on my fork to make it more orderly.

I spent a lot of time eating around my European grandparents as a kid, and they were so proud that I ate according to their rules, unlike my sister and parents, who eat right-handed!

How is it gonna get cold in the 2 min it takes to eat a steak?
If someone is a very very very slow eater I guess it could get cold....

I''ve never heard of this "proper way".
As far as I know, the proper way in my country is to continue to eat it with your left hand.
That sounds like waaayy too much hassle with all the switching hands.
