Need a really nice (read large) engagement ring in the 20k to 25k...including the setting. I focused my research on H&A rounds for a little while but recently I''ve been looking at Princess. I can get a larger princess but I still have reservations. I''m also debating whether I should get a soltaire setting or three stone or pave settings. I want the most impressive ring I can in my budget range. If I get the three stone or pave I may be able to go with a H color as there is less viewing from the undersides. The solitare by itself I would probably need an F. What do you think?

Also, where should I purchase?

Ditto.

Round and square are total opposites. If not sure, I''d personally go round.

I agree, they are totally different looks. I think you can never go wrong with a round. But best to find out what she wants. Some people love princess cuts while others don''t.

It''s a surprise.

Then really, I''d go with a round. You have a fantastic budget, and can get her a sizable rock.

the safe bet is a round. you are the only one who knows your girl well enough to make the decisions though.
i get the impression from your post that big=impressive. i can tell you that i would prefer a well cut 2ct. round to a 4ct. princess but you need to decide what *she* would want.
if you don't know for sure, perhaps you should doing a little more investigating before you plunk down 20k on a ring. even if you buy from a vendor with a great return policy, no woman wants to be put in the position of telling her s.o. that she isn't thrilled with the ring he picked. or worse, not telling him and silently wishing she had something else.

All good advice. That was original thinking and why I concentrated on rounds in the beginning. On a related topic, why is it that two months ago GOG rocks were all over this site and now very little?

supply and demand!

good diamonds don''t stay around long at all. once you decide what it is you''re looking for you need to be quick.

getting a good diamond takes patience and quickness. patience to wait for what you want and quickness to get it before someone else does.

Call the vendor you want to work with and tell them what you want. GOG has stones coming in all the time, you could possibly get dibs on one before they get it and post it on the site. That''s how I got mine.

Don''t go by what is posted on the search here. Go directly to their website...and better yet, call and tell them what you want and they can look for you. WhiteFlash also has stones that are not yet posted here. I would stick with these two vendors, personally.

As to your questions, I''d go with a round. You can get a 2 ct. stone if you go with H VS. You can get an F-G if you stay just under 2 cts. But I''ll tell you, an H is fine in a larger stone even with the stone very exposed as in a solitaire. I cannot see color at all in my 1.63 H. Good Old Gold does have a colorimeter which is very nice which can tell you if the color is high, low, or average. I do personally prefer a solitaire for an e-ring if the stone is large (above 1.5).

How about opinions of vendors?

many times it's going to come down to who has the diamond your looking for in stock. WF, GOG, Quest, and just about all of the PS vendors have very good reputations and return policy's, you really can't go wrong with any of them. You might also want to look at Pearlmans website. he doesn't list his stones but has the best selection of settings and might have what you're looking for..

I do also agree with the gals who said you might want to investigate what your gal wants. You've got an amazing budget, so you might as well get her exactly what she wants right?

You may be able to get a larger princess with the same money, but an excellent cut round will look quite a bit bigger. Princesses do not face up particularily large.
