I read someone post about this before. They said that their ring - and I believe it was a wedding band - had an intricate design that included a lot of holes in the metal. He was pleased with the look, but complained that this resulted in the ring smelling due to various things (eg. lotion, dirt) accumulating in the holes. How prevalent of an issue is this? I'm asking because I'm looking for an ering and many appear to have holes all over the place like this. Is this something one should be concerned with?

I ... don''t believe that''s ever occurred to me before. I''d say as long as you clean your ring periodically, not even necessarily in steam-heat or anything, just with a baby toothbrush and some dishwashing detergent, you should be fine.

Good lord, if it actively stank, I wonder how dirty the diamonds looked ....

I don''t think it will be a problem, so long as the ring is just kept clean. For the diamonds to sparkle, you''ll need to keep it clean anyway, so it shouldn''t make a difference.

Most folks here clean their rings very regularly, just make sure you adapt the cleaning method to the ring, ie don''t be too harsh with delicate pave. Sorry, I couldn''t open your link, so I can''t see exactly the style you''re talking about, but I''ve never had a ring smell bad - it would be cleaned long before it got to that stage.

I wouldn''t worry about it personally.

Hope that helps!

Jen

I can''t imagine how long it would take without a cleaning to make a ring like that smell. Don''t think it will be a problem. I have a natural cleaner that I just drop my rings in when I go to sleep (Gemcare) and just
rinse and use a litttle toothbrush in the morning.

Thanks for all your replies. It seems like it shouldn''t be an issue at all as long as you keep some sort of regularly cleaning schedule.

I''ve never heard about that before.

If it''s dirty enough to smell, I would think that is a hygiene problem. The holes are there for cleaning and as long as a ring is kept reasonably clean, I can''t imagine it smelling! Pshew!!

Yeah seriously - that sounds really gross for it to be so dirty it smells. No hygenic person will let that happen.

Wow, I''ve honestly never heard this before. I''ve heard of it with earrings, but never rings . . .

I clean my rings/jewelry weekly, so maybe if a ring hasn''t been cleaned for years and years it might develop serious gunk, but a SMELL?

All I can say is EEEEWWWW!

Eeeeewwwww....

Haha. Sorry to have caused such a disturbance on the forum! I''m glad it''s not an issue.

All I can say is this thread really skeeves me out...........as she compulsively cleans her ring on a daily basis.

add me to the creeped out posters :)

OK I''ll fess up on behalf of sweet DH:

We were married in 1987. His wedding band has one (maybe 1/3 carat) diamond. Underneath, there is a hole.

He has NEVER taken his ring off.

Last month, he got a blister while using the rowing machine on his ring finger, so we had to remove the ring. (oh the trauma!!)

BUT OMG there was a whole little bacterial experiment going on in the hole of the ring! It took 3 sessions in the ultrasonic to dislodge the plug of dirt. EW EW EW EW

I made him look at it. I made him smell it. UP CLOSE. He just looked at me, thanked me for cleaning the ring, and slid the ring back on his finger. Said he''s diarize a cleaning for 2035.... men.....

Just the thought of a smell in a ring. I know many people do not remove there rings, but I think a general cleaning is needed. I am a germ-o-phobe! I clean my ring every day in a simple solution. But, in ordinary I think that if you at least clean your ring once a week thats good enough.

I heard someone say once: Don''t bother paying for a quality diamond if you are not going to keep it clean, you won''t see any of the sparkle you paid for.

...and the title of this post made me cringe

, but for some reason had to open it!!!

LOL LS, Well it is sweet that he never wants to take it off.

BRB. Wrenching W''s ring off of his finger - despite the lack of hole - because it has also never been in an ultrasonic. I''ll report back if it stinks.

There are certain things our hands come in contact with that, if caught in a ring, would smell after a while.
It makes sense.

Things like raw hamburger or chicken would get pretty rancid after a few days of incubating next to your warm skin.
Then of course, there is that paperwork operation after your "daily duty", or "daily doodie".

It makes sense that anything which could trap and hold stuff may stink if it is not kept clean.

That''s why you take your ring off, when handling food, etc... Put the lotion on your hands before putting the ring on... It''s common sense people!!!

Or you can be like me, I only wear my rings when I leave the house. Truth be told?? I don''t love wearing rings, I want to be free...

That way doing chores around the house, My rings are safely put away on a ring holder I have.

I can cook, clean and do what ever, without having to worry about them... And I do worry about them... That''s why I don''t wear them 24/7 and would feel constricted..

Gahh scary!!!

I''m in the skeeves me out camp. Yuck. Okay... I can''t even express how much that grossed me out, and LS on the one hand LMAO on the other ICKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!

I''m not among the daily cleaning folks here with my engagement ring... but that''s because I''m not in the daily wearing camp either. But I do clean that puppy with dawn (antibacterial) and a soft tooth brush and boiling water (yes, actually boiling) every 10 days or so.

If you buy a ring with lots of open work... just invest in a nice steam cleaner or a water pick or ... just a kettle and pour some hot water on it and brush it clean with a toothbrush.

Still skeeved out.

Anything you don''t keep clean will start to smell - feet, dogs, bed, clothing, whatever. Like everything else, you should clean your rings regularly. Smell won''t be a problem in a clean ring
