Thanks @Gussie, we’ve got a septic, so I’ll be using septic friendly detergent and cleaning products.

A top loader (no agitator) ESPECIALLY IN TEXAS. The humidity is high (even in Austin) and the top loaders begin to stink quickly due to mildew. I also suggest never using any detergent that has fragrance. I speak from experience!

Oops, this should say, "the front loaders begin to stink quickly."

okay, so I'm ignorant about why front loaders get stinky. I've always had top loaders. Can someone explain why this happens to front loaders?

I’m curious to know as well; I have never had such a problem.

I think it's partly because of the basic design. With a top loader gravity pulls the moisture out through the drain. Water flows downhill and flows out. But the front loader has spaces especially the gasket in the door that cannot drain as well. The front loader is a closed system and the moisture accumulates. I see some manufacturers claiming this does not happen with their newly designed front loaders. We shall see. I keep my front loader door open and clean it regularly and do not have a mildew/moisture/mold issue.

I thought I’d come back and update this after you all kindly took the time to reply.

Ultimately I went for a top loader. When we were given a closing date on the house, I hunted around and it was what was available for delivery when I needed it. I‘ve got a Samsung washer and dryer (it’s kind of a rose gold colour - hey, I’m a PSer after all ).

So far so good, it’s designed so that you don’t have to bend in too far to retrieve the washing, it has a pre spot clean function and has an impeller, not an agitator. It has plenty of cycles to choose from, and spins a few times when the cycle starts to weigh up the load and determine the right amount of water needed. You can also adjust the mount of rinses, spins, water temp. etc. The dryer is really fast, even on heavy items like the towels and bathrobes, they’re dry in about 35 mins. That’s a far cry from my one back in England, often times they weren’t dry after an hour.

I ordered them from Costco, they delivered and installed them, tested them to make sure they were working before they left. The even better news is that I also discovered, that if Costco reduce the price of something within 30 days of delivery, you contact them for a price adjustment and they refund you the difference. So I got back $100 on the washer and dryer - Win, Win.

As an aside, we’ve ended up going for high gloss light grey units for the utility room, and found a remnant piece of granite for the sink top. Hopefully it’ll be installed next week, then that’s everything in the house complete.

Thanks again for all your input.

So funny- we just purchased a Samsung top loader, but it’s “brushed platinum”! I like top loaders, hope it works out well for both of us :)
