I know this has probably been discussed here, but not recently, so I thought I'd open it up.

If you could have any kind of wedding at all - and if money was no object - what would it be like? Where would it be? What would you and your FI wear? Flowers? Food? Honeymoon? I want to hear details!

I'll start....

I'm not a fancy kind of girl, and I was never the type to dream about a big princess type wedding. I'd have the same kind of wedding if I had oodles of money as opposed to not. Thing is, I live in Connecticut. There is a lot of money in this state, and big princess weddings are pretty much the norm. People really like to show off here, which is so not-me. It is VERY unusual not to have the $5K dress, the big church wedding, the elaborate sit-down dinner and a honeymoon to somewhere exotic and tropical.

I want a classic "biker" wedding in the late summer or very early fall. Biker as in "motorcycle." A lot of my friends are bikers, as are my BF's. My BF is in a popular local Southern Rock band....he's a biker and most of the fans are, too. Bikers are some of the most honest, earthy, fun people. We'd get married outside - in a backyard or in a park. It would be really casual - guests could dress up or not, kids and dogs could come, and even shoes would not be required. I would wear a simple white dress and white cowboy boots. I'd wear a cowboy hat with netting on the back as opposed to a headpiece. And instead of getting flowers from a florist, I'd just pick something wild and wrap a ribbon around the bunch. Here in the North, we have gorgeous wildflowers - black-eyed Susans, wild red poppies, Queen Anne's lace, forsythia, lilac and these purple weedy things that grow in swamps (I think it's called purple loostrife). My BF would wear his jeans, his snake boots, a white shirt with a bolo tie and his leather bike vest. I'd have my three best girlfriends stand up for me. They would have on Western wear (I was thinking long denim prairie skirts, concha belts and white shirts, with tan cowboy hats). I would ride in on the back of a bike (probably driven by either his best man or my MOH) and my son would give me away.

After the ceremony (which would be quick), everyone would hang out for a PIG ROAST! We could possibly also have a clambake-type firepit with clams, potatoes, etc., grilling alongside. My best friend is one of the most amazing cooks, and I would ask her to make my wedding cake - nothing fancy or traditional, with wildflowers for decoration.

Since we have a lot of musician friends, people would be encouraged to bring instruments. I'd change out of my dress and into jeans at some point. My BF has these cargo shorts and horrible teva-like mandals that he'd probably put on....and I would promise not to bitch about them for just that one day. The party would last as long as everyone would stay awake, and we'd encourage people to bring tents/sleeping bags to sleep over. In the afternoon after the wedding (we will need sleep!), we'd leave on our honeymoon, which (if money were no object) would be a 2-3 week trip of the American Southwest -- New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona. We both love it out there.

At the moment, my dream wedding is any wedding that is over, rather than coming up in 7 weeks.

Ooh Bridget your wedding sounds fun!

And Indy I know you've given up. Hang in there!!

If we're talking no budget, my dream wedding would take place at the Fairmont Hotel in Seattle. It has just the romantic feel I want, like a 1920s living room or something. I think a winter wedding would be unique around here. Lacy or chiffony dress, hair in loose curls. Lots of dancing, perhaps a song sung by my new hubby (
5.gif
). My BFF and I made up a dance for the BMs at a wedding for our friend, I'm hoping she does the same for me, it was so funny! We performed it for the bride to Shania Twain's "Man, I Feel Like a Woman". Anyhoo, good food, good cake, but most of all, I just want to have fun!

BF says he wants a pirate wedding. We'll see how that goes...

A pirate wedding sounds cool! Maybe you should give it some thought.

I had to Google that...and it is BEAUTIFUL! I love those old classic hotels!

Another one that I adore (and this would be awesome for a winter wedding - not real far from WA) is the Ahwanee Hotel in Yosemite National Park. I have never stayed there, but I did have dinner there and walked the grounds the last time I was in CA. Their "solarium" looks right out onto a peak that''s called (ironically) Bridal Veil Falls. Ladies...you want to drool at the beauty? If you like Southwestern and Native American theme/culture, you will die. See pic below and check THIS out: http://www.yosemitepark.com/Accommodations_TheAhwahnee.aspx. An architectural designer that did work on the property also put up this site: http://www.historic-hotels-lodges.com/california/ahwahnee-hotel/ahwahnee-hotel-tour.htm

I''m having my dream wedding pretty much. I''ve put a budget on things as I just can''t justify spending that much money on a wedding, however if I wanted, we could spend much more. I love hunting a bargain though so I''m having great fun.

Our wedding venue is cabra castle which is our dream venue. Haven''t picked the dress yet so not sure what it will be like as I like a huge amount of styles. Have already got my dream shoes, which are in this thread shoes .
We''re going to do invites and flowers ourselves, which is what I''ve always wanted to do. We''re having a swing band for the reception and a gospel choir for the ceremony. The dream scenario that I''ve always pictured is a lovely castle, my lovely groom and all my family and friends having a great time.

I was thinking that, too! Pirates are hot, and my BF would look awesome dressed as one (being that he's got the rugged mountain-man thing going on). Most men would! Another fun, not-cheesy idea would be a gypsy wedding, kind of like the image on Heart's "Little Queen" album. I always loved that album cover.

Not so much in my area, but I have heard that Renaisance weddings are becoming popular and that's another idea that comes to mind.

Oh lord...I am not telling him that people think it''s a good idea. LMAO!!! I can just imagine the look on his mom''s face when we tell her to look for a wench''s costume for her son''s wedding! Hahaha!!! It would be really frickin fun though, I''ll admit.

That hotel looks cool! I love places like that. The worst part about the Fairmont is that I have to walk by it going to lunch often, and I drool on the windows looking in. The humanity.

I love bee''s castle too.

Bee's castle is TDF!!!!!! I looked through the website and just drooled and drooled. It's really beautiful. And my boyfriend, being almost full Irish, wouldn't need too much convincing to get married over there (that is, once he asks!). He's talked about going to Ireland to meet his late mother's brother. The brother is almost 90, lives in Dublin (Fairview, if you know where that is, Bee) and is too frail to travel, and the last time he saw my BF in person was when my BF was 3 or 4 (40+ years ago). My BF's parents met while in the military, and he lived in England for the first two years of his life. When he and his uncle talked on the phone recently, the uncle thought it quite amusing that my BF found a redheaded woman named Bridget in this country.

One thing that floored me was that the prices in Ireland are much less than a comparable wedding would be in the US - at least in my part of the country. Everything where I live is very very expensive (probably because of the proximity to NYC and Boston). A reception comparable to what the castle offers would cost at least $200 American per plate....and that is not counting the cost for the liquor/wine. I was very amazed how much you can get for so little money....and a little envious!

Bee, do you know of any Americans who came over to Ireland to marry and honeymoon? I still want my biker wedding...but I am intrigued.

Bridget in Connecticut.

Thanks sunnyd!

Hi sandia! Thanks for the love for the castle
3.gif
I do adore it!!

I''m not sure of any Americans that married over here but I know that deco went on her honeymoon here. She has a post on PS somewhere with her story on it. I''ve no idea of similar prices in the states, however for a castle wedding, Cabra Castle is extremely good value. Other things like bands, flowers, videographers etc, seem to be the same price in euro as you guys pay in dollars so that could get a bit expensive, but the castle will definitely save you money!
I know fairview well-one of my friends from my old college course lived in fairview up until last year. What about having your biker wedding over here?

You know.....that''s a thought! I''d be up for it!

Since we were originally talking about "if cost was not an option," I would love to hire Motorhead to be my band! Can you just imagine them doing a biker wedding? They are THE classic biker band. And I have always loved Lemmy - he''s so ugly he''s cute!

That would be cool!! I''d have queens of the stone age if money was no object and I wasn''t going for a swing band.

To Elope!!

Somewhere exotic just the two of us in flip flops

. Then travel around for a month or two for our honeymoon...

Bee...I just have to say that castle is AMAZING!! You are a lucky girl! I looked into getting married in Ireland and boy are they strict or what?!

My FI is obsessed with castles and someday he wants to go on a castle tour all over europe so I''m sure he''ll be jealous as I am

Are they? As I''m Irish, it''s relatively easy for me so I''ve no idea what it would be like living somewhere else. You could always come over for a holiday and stay there!

Wow, Bee! Your location is gorgeous! Its truly beyond words....

Well..maybe strict is the wrong word. It just seemed like a lot of work for us since we are not from there...
14.gif

BUT...YES!! Ireland is top on my list of places to visit!!
9.gif

yeah the church love giving us lots of work to do before we tie the knot, as do the government!

You''ll definitely have to visit!!

*scratches head* I really don''t know!

I guess something elegant and simple, with a casual "let''s party!" undercurrent. Does that make any sense? So everyone would be dressed nicely, with nice-looking decor, but no one would be acting stiff or snooty. And I know you said budget isn''t an issue, but my dream wedding would be to do all of this on a tight budget and to have it look nice. I LOVE getting a bargain!

I''ve got to do my venue-picking soon and want to get things done ASAP, but I''m sort of stuck in the "I don''t know" phase.

my dream wedding would be for me, FI, our best friends and family to trek out into the woods up north carrying candles in the middle of the nite after a big snowfall and say our vows out there. just the moon, snow, trees, candles. unfortunately i don''t think that anyone other than FI and i would appreciate (not to mention go along with) this.

I would love a destination wedding in some gorgeous European place. I would fly everyone there, in a private jet, and put them up in the area. Maybe a gorgeous country estate or castle in the the spring or fall. I would have all the guests staying there too. I would do a wonderful dinner and events before the wedding, maybe one evening in a beautiful tent filled with crystals, candles, flowers...and have lots of fun events surrounding the few days of the wedding. I would love to have a real band that I love at one of the parties (Foo Fighters, or Maroon 5 or Nickleback) and have top chefs from all over preparing food. I would also love an amazing fireworks show. I would have different excursions and events/activities during the day. I would want a really elegant, fun and memorable weekend for all.

Honeymoon, I always wanted to go to the Seychelles for beach and then do a very high end safari, but am a bit fearful I must admit. Then I would love to do a high end cruise on one of those very small high end luxury ships, have a gorgeous suite and really go to some wonderful ports.

Sunnyd I was totally joking. A pirate wedding would indeed be cool... if you were 10 and it was the school play.

Actually, a pirate wedding would also be cool if you were actually a pirate. You''re not a pirate are you, Sunnyd? Or your guy? Does he plunder for a living on the high seas?

I figured as much. Haha!

We'll just have a pirate themed halloween party next year.

ETA: No, I am not a pirate. I did like the Pirates movies though, does that make me one? BF is also not a pirate, but he and his BIL have plans to build a pirate ship. I laugh now, but they might actually do it...

I have two. Actually I am sure I could come up with more than that but I''ll keep it at two.

First one would be here: Hotel Albuquerque
What kind of sucks, is that everyone I graduated with from high school has gotten married there for no particular reason except that it''s pretty. I, on the other hand, grew up in a house that''s about 2 miles away and got my hair cut at the salon that was in Hotel Albuquerque (used to be Sheraton Old Town) since I was 2 by the owner. She has since moved the salon across the parking lot from the hotel, but I still get my hair cut there (yes, that''s going on 24 years!). It would be early October/late September and I''d want to get married at sunset with the crowd facing the west (Sandia mountains). There''d only be about 30 guests if I had my way, and the colors would be all shades of bright blue, aqua, turquoise, cobalt, etc. as well as white, black and silver. Being that price is unlimited here in wedding dream world, I''d have my ex pastry chef make my wedding cake (using my recipes from school). I''d have fairy lights and lots of blue fabric swooping all over the place, in tall centerpieces I''d have white tulips and white roses. Lots of candlelight and fairy lights. And I''d have Moby DJ. I''m sure there is more...

Second: same location, in January or February. Ceremony would still take place outside but closer to the building (we''re not sadists, it''d be 10 minutes max!). Then we''d go to this room for the reception: Fireplace Room And I''d have white roses, white tulips, fairy lights, candlelight, pale icy blue fabric (covering up the pots in the niches-I hate Southwestern Decor) and snowflakes EVERYWHERE. If I could I''d probably throw some Swarovski crystals in there somewhere, and we''d take full advantage of the fireplace. Colors would be pale blues, whites, silver and the palest of greens with plenty of shimmer. Again there would be only 30 people or so. And we''d have a fabulous sit-down dinner. And only wine to drink (BF doesn''t drink at all, I only drink a little, and everyone else could deal with it). Moby would DJ again here too...

For both, I''d wear a tiara, no veil, wear a silver or blue dress, and the most fabulous pair of high end designer shoes I could get my hands on. Also I''d wear my father''s mother''s diamond broach, the chandelier earrings I got from my best friend for my 24th birthday, my blue topaz bracelet and my sapphire necklace-both I got from BF. And I would ROCK IT. And for the winter wedding I''d have a long white/silver cape with pale blue silk lining made so I wouldn''t totally freeze.

With either one I think a honeymoon to Europe would be nice, I don''t really care about seasons. But going to Japan would be nice too. Ohhh...the possibilities.

FrekeChild, you''re from Albuquerque?!!!!! I was planning a move out there a couple years back (got stopped by my ex who wouldn''t agree to a custody agreement with my son -- and I will move nowhere without my child). The loft I was going to rent faces the Sandia Mountains (Cinnamon Tree Apartments on Central, near UNM). My favorite places to eat out there is a place called Petra near UNM (Middle Eastern restaurant with hookahs!) and El Pinto. I know the Hotel Albuquerque very, very well and agree that it''s an awesome place for a wedding. Actually, the outside terrace at El Pinto would be gorgeous for a wedding, too. Your fairy lights would look heavenly strung in the overhead trellis. Sunset on the mountains.....sigh. CT sunsets are nothing like NM sunsets and I dream about them sometimes.

Sorry to thread hijack....but I love your state sooooo much and miss it sooooo much that I had a zia tattooed on my left wrist. See pic below. It''s a perfect zia but looks distorted because of how I have to hold my hand while taking my own pic. Also notice the icky snow in my company''s parking lot. My brother in Colorado is getting married in October and I hope to be able to swing an extra few days to take my BF down your way. He''s never seen NM and has no clue what he''s missing. You must think I''m a nutcase, going on and on....just so thrilled to read familiar stuff posted. Thanks for making my Friday!

Bridget in Connecticut.

Hmmm...if cost was no object, I think I''d rent out a beautiful castle in Europe for a week (Florence, Capri, Barcelona?), and have friends and family come for a holiday free of charge (haha, in my dreams), and pay for anyone who couldn''t afford to come (if they could take off work).

There is part of me that still really likes the idea of running off somewhere, just J and I (and our families, I''d be ok with just the two of us, but he wants at least our families there) though, which is good because it''s probably what we''ll actually do, and then have big parties at our respective homes to celebrate.

Yup! I''m from the Land of Enchantment, and have been here for about 25 years of my almost 26. Its so funny that you mention all this stuff that I just take for granted most of the time now. I''ve never been to Petra, in fact I haven''t even heard of it, but there are so many places around UNM and Nob Hill that it''s hard to keep track. However, El Pinto is AMAZING! I love that place, and I''ve actually thought it would be an amazing place to get married or have a wedding reception because it''s got such amazing outdoor spaces. Hell, I just love the whole place, although I have gotten lost inside it before. Actually now that I think about it, I actually made a wedding cake for a reception that was being held there a few years ago. Lol!I know what you''re saying about NE sunsets not even comparing with NM sunsets. I actually went to culinary school up in Hyde Park NY and I missed the sunsets and the mountains the most. The one thing you guys have over us would be the beautiful deep green plants everywhere.

I don''t know what this "icky snow" business is about! We got our first (and probably last) major snow storm the past week and it was 1/2 an inch.
20.gif
I''d love to get some more, because this winter has been pretty warm and really dry.

If you guys manage to swing into town (which you really should) perhaps we could meet up and do a little bling shopping!
31.gif
I think he''d really like it here from what you''ve said about him, and I''m not surprised really to hear that you love NM. When I first saw your name, I wondered if you were from NM, but then saw the signature line that said "Bridget from Connecticut" and promptly forgot about it. I love the zia tattoo! That''s awesome!

Honestly, I wouldn''t mind moving out of state right about now because I''ve been here so long and a change of scenery would be nice, but my heart will always call ABQ home. And my perfect place to move right now would be CO, because I''d only been a semi-short car ride away from home!
27.gif

So did you live here for a while?

Ergh...sorry from the thread jack!

Oooooooh, fun! And I have a lot of time to kill.
11.gif

Okay, if I could have any wedding I wanted, this is what it would be:

It would be on Whitehaven Beach. Since there are unlimited funds, I would be able to fly everybody we love out...and that's a lot of people, lol. His family is huge, and I don't think it would feel right without close friends (of mine, of his, of my family's, of his family's...).

I would wear something like this dress: J. Crew, and the BMs would be in shades of turquoise/aqua. There would be mango/orange/yellow flowers, and little mango-clad flower girls with fairy wings and big poufy dresses. The guys would be in khaki pants and white button downs, and flip flops. There would be a lot of flip flops.
2.gif
Actually, since it's Whitehaven (with something like 99% silica sand) I'd probably just encourage everybody to go barefoot.

Now, in case there hasn't been enough of a novel yet, the food is where I have been really dreaming. It would be a combination of foods we love, in bite-sized pieces so that people could have whatever they want. There would be sushi, satay, barbeque sandwiches, a few different pintxos (especially my favourite, with cream cheese and strawberries), and some Indian food (that would be up to him). Basically, it would be a heavy hors d'oeuvres reception, but more like tapas where you fill up on them. The cake would look something like this: pretty cake. It would be lemon with mango jam between the layers. (Ok, I'm a little hungry while I write this, lol).

There would be a ton of dancing, and it would be one of those weddings where everybody's laughing and having a good time, and most guests end up staying until the very end. There would be kids (ideally I'd have a lot of kids in the wedding party) and they'd be out dancing with everybody else.

Of course, in my dream wedding I've also managed to invent a really nice sunscreen that doesn't make your skin go all wonky or feel funny when you sweat.

ETA: I forgot to add I'd want henna on my hands and feet. I'm not Indian, but somehow it's something I really associate with weddings, and would definitely want to include it in mine!
