Hello again!
I apologize for taking so long to post an update on the re-cutting of my tourmaline but, for some reason, this process took waaayyyy longer than it should have.
Here's the original thread where the re-cut was discussed:
https://www.pricescope.com/communit...stion-about-copper-bearing-tourmaline.185984/
For those of you who don't want to take the time to read the thread (or if I messed up the URL), here's the cliffnotes version.
I purchased this copper bearing tourmaline. It had a huge window in it and I asked the experts here if they recommended a recut. After taking one look at what was referred to as "the bay window" almost everyone agreed that re-cut was needed.
I sent the stone off to Jerry Newman and asked him to only close the window without taking much off of the circumference of the stone. My reasoning for that was that I had an antique looking setting that I thought would work with this stone and if too much was removed from the outside of the stone, it wouldn't fit the setting.
So, as usual, Jerry did a beautiful job re-cutting the tourmaline but did inform me that he wasn't happy with the tilt window and would prefer to do a full cut on it to see what could be done to remove it. I asked him to go ahead send it to me with the tilt window and I would see how it worked in the setting.
The tourmaline and the setting then went to the jeweler where they both sat collecting dust for awhile (but that's another story). I finally picked the ring up last week and, I have to say, I'm pretty pleased with it. What is funny is that the stone is actually a little too large for the setting and a full re-cut would have worked but, after the ordeal I had getting it set, there's no way I'm taking it out of the setting any time soon.
Here's the finished ring (and my old lady hand, ugh).
Close-up of the finished ring.
I think it is beautiful but, very hard to photograph so my apolgies for the larger photo being a bit blurry. The setting leaves the tourmaline very exposed so I only wear it every so often which is fine with me.
The tilt window can still be seen at times but it doesn't really bother me enough to do anything about it right now. Maybe some day I'll send it back for a full re-cut but I plan to leave it alone for awhile.
Thank you all very much for convincing me to go ahead with the re-cut. Great advice as usual!
