Tourmaline Re-Cut - An Update

Hello again!

I apologize for taking so long to post an update on the re-cutting of my tourmaline but, for some reason, this process took waaayyyy longer than it should have.

Here's the original thread where the re-cut was discussed:

https://www.pricescope.com/communit...stion-about-copper-bearing-tourmaline.185984/

For those of you who don't want to take the time to read the thread (or if I messed up the URL), here's the cliffnotes version.

I purchased this copper bearing tourmaline. It had a huge window in it and I asked the experts here if they recommended a recut. After taking one look at what was referred to as "the bay window" almost everyone agreed that re-cut was needed.

I sent the stone off to Jerry Newman and asked him to only close the window without taking much off of the circumference of the stone. My reasoning for that was that I had an antique looking setting that I thought would work with this stone and if too much was removed from the outside of the stone, it wouldn't fit the setting.

So, as usual, Jerry did a beautiful job re-cutting the tourmaline but did inform me that he wasn't happy with the tilt window and would prefer to do a full cut on it to see what could be done to remove it. I asked him to go ahead send it to me with the tilt window and I would see how it worked in the setting.

The tourmaline and the setting then went to the jeweler where they both sat collecting dust for awhile (but that's another story). I finally picked the ring up last week and, I have to say, I'm pretty pleased with it. What is funny is that the stone is actually a little too large for the setting and a full re-cut would have worked but, after the ordeal I had getting it set, there's no way I'm taking it out of the setting any time soon.

Here's the finished ring (and my old lady hand, ugh).

Close-up of the finished ring.

I think it is beautiful but, very hard to photograph so my apolgies for the larger photo being a bit blurry. The setting leaves the tourmaline very exposed so I only wear it every so often which is fine with me.

The tilt window can still be seen at times but it doesn't really bother me enough to do anything about it right now. Maybe some day I'll send it back for a full re-cut but I plan to leave it alone for awhile.

Thank you all very much for convincing me to go ahead with the re-cut. Great advice as usual!

Very handsome! You have a great eye. The color of the stone is perfect with the style of the setting. The ring is just lovely and looks great on you. Tilt window, what tilt window?!! :praise:

What a beautiful and unique setting. Most people have no idea what a tilt window even is and would never notice so I think it's awesome you decided to just enjoy it

I think I would barely notice a tilt window with a magnificent setting like that!

I love that setting, very antique looking, gorgeous :D

Me too on the setting! It's unusual & very very pretty. The tourm is just right for it -- bet you get a lot of compliments. I don't see a tilt window in your photos & I'm sure nobody does when you wear it -- as Bluebirrd says, 99.9% of people have never heard of one anyway. Wear it & enjoy -- it's lovely.

Jeesh, I'm having trouble posting individual replies for some reason so, let me try this:

To Minousbijoux: Thanks! I'm glad you stopped by to see the end result. I really appreciated your input when I posted my original question. I'm still jealous of your "real deal" Paraibas though. Lol.

The color of both the stone and the setting are a little lighter IRL and there is a bit of yellow in the stone that the camera doesn't really capture. The ring makes me think of Easter/Spring for some reason.

Jerry is absolutely amazing. He managed to remove the huge window with minimal loss of carat weight. It was 4.64 before being re-cut and is now it is 4.04 carats. I couldn't be happier with his work.

To bluebird: Thank you! I really am enjoying it. It's a little on the large side even by my standards but I'm having fun wearing it. Even though stones with windows of any type generally bother me, it isn't an issue for me with this one.

To peacechick: Thank you! I guess the lesson here is, if you ever have a stone with a tilt window, just put in an interesting setting and people will be less likely to notice. I will remember this in the future. Lol.

To Scarlett1: Thank you! I think it looks antique too but I don't believe it is very old. I like interesting, unique and (obviously) large settings. My fingers are a bit on the longish side so I can get away with a larger ring although this one is a bit extreme even for me.

To JewelFreak: Thanks! When I bought this setting it was actually a ring with a rubellite tourmaline trillion in it. Why someone would put a trillion in an oval setting is beyond me but that's what was done. To give my jeweler much deserved credit, he did have to do some work on the setting to fix the issues caused by the trillion. I think he did a great job and his prices are reasonable so I didn't really mind waiting awhile for it to be done.

Gawi: You are very sweet, but alas, I do not own any "real deal" Paraibas, :(sad just various cuprians.

What a splendid ring. The setting is amazing and Jerry did an excellent job in saving as much of the stone as possible, yet minimized the window into nothingness. Enjoy your lovely ring.

Wow, I love the setting and the color of the tourmaline is perfect in it! :appl:

I'm not sure why I am having problems replying to individual posts so I have to bundle my replies in one post again.

To Minousbijoux: Well boy do I feel stupid. That's what I get for posting without thinking and without adequate levels of caffeine in my system. Sorry for my confusion.

To Chrono: Thank you. Jerry did do an amazing job. When he told me the final carat weight I was thrilled that he was able to keep it above 4 carats and close the window as well as he did. He's a fantastic cutter and a really nice guy.

To Catmom: Thank you. When I first received the tourmaline I knew it belonged with this setting. I know the style of this setting isn't for everyone but I love unusual pieces so it works for me.

It's really lovely! He did a great job recutting it and I think any one of us here would be thrilled to wear that ring!

I am in awe of that incredible setting!! I've never seen anything like it!! The tourmaline colour looks like it was made for that ring - fantastic finger coverage!

Yes! This is what I was trying to say.

I love, love, your tourmaline ring!!!! The recut obviously was a great decision. But with that said, the setting is just gorgeous! I love a ring like this. It is very substantial, kind of vintage, and yet modern.

Thank you FrekeChild, Enerchi and LisaRN. I really appreciate your kind words.
