Hello PS community. Long time lurker, first time poster.
Amazing site!
Note to mods: If this is not appropriate, feel free to move it wherever.

I have an Ering from a previous marriage that I would like do something with. My first thought was to turn the stone into a simple pendant, but now, I think I''d really like to just trade it in for a nice small pair of studs.

How easy is this to do? Is this a faux pas? And, given that I''m in the Chicago area, does anyone know of any reputable jewelers who might do something like this?

Thank you so much in advance for your opinions and advice. I''ve really learned a lot here!

Call Chris Zieglar at Orrington Jewelers in Winnetka. (847) 446-5171. He''s a 1-man store with gorgeous items and he always seems willing to do whatever. He''s VERY down to earth. All he can say is ''No," right? I hope it works out....

Was the ring bought from a vendor that allows an upgrade? I''ve heard of some vendors allowing a stone to be upgraded in colour or clarity, getting a smaller stone. It''d be worth while to see if an allowed trade in would be two diamonds for your one.

Wow - thank you for speedy replies!

The stone was sourced from a family store in another state, and the setting was sourced from *another* family store down the street - so I suspect not. Actually it''s very plain and classic in a standard size (YG Jabel setting with matching band) and the diamond is about a carat. My thought is it''s probably fair to good in cut (after reading up here!!). I don''t have any actual cert on it, just the jeweler''s comment for an insurance appraisal.

And gee, Winnetka is right on my way home from work! (this could be easier than I thought!! Nice!)

If a jeweller won''t do a flat out trade (and I''d doubt they would, tbh) then it''s worth it to find someone who might sell it on consignment or yourself - there are some avenues to do this but you won''t get anywhere near what it cost originally. Then you can take the money and buy earrings wherever you want. It''d probably be two separate transactions.

BTW - it''s at 553 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka - he''s very approachable
