Hurricane driven winds and dry conditions have burned large areas of Maui and the island of Hawaii.

Many dead.
Many more missing.

:nono:

News/updates are plentiful, so I'll post no links.

I saw some horrific before/after pictures of maui. I heard the banyon tree is gone :( So many lives and homes lost.

HI:

I just posted this in another thread. Heartbreaking! ;( ;(

kind regards--Sharon

Just so damn sad. The place is / was paradise.
I hope as many as possible have found ways to escape.

I did scan all the Hangout thread titles.
There was no thread on the fires.

So now, before anyone starts a new thread about anything they are expected to first search all the lengthy about-everything threads?

I try to never open those overwhelming 600 page catch-all threads.
It's like 100 people in the same room all taking at the same time. :eek2: :knockout:
Or, it's like trying to watch 15 TV shows at the same time by changing the channel every minute.

So now everyone on PS is expected to "keep up to date" on everything in all of those threads?

Devastating.

"How Climate Change Turned Lush Hawaii Into a Tinderbox

Declining rainfall, rising temperatures and invasive species have left the islands more susceptible to wildfires."

i dont have the right words with so many dead and displaced
very sad indeed
i hope the island gets all the support it needs right now and in the future

My nephew, his wife, and their 4 kids lost everything in the Lahaina fire. It happened so fast they didn't have time to save anything. They moved there early this year when nephew got a job as an ER doc. We don't have many details as communication systems are still sketchy but we know he's busy tending to fire victims. We're waiting for more info on where wife and kids are located.

I was only just a visitor there. But after many trips, it always felt like "home".
I'm very sad for the loss of life.
Hopefully they can rebuild, but the historic buildings are gone forever.

Here are a few 'not so good' photos taken in Lahaina. All gone now.

This is under the historic banyan tree.

We spent part of our honeymoon in Lahaina. Very sad!

I don’t think that is what Sharon was implying Kenny. Your response is ridiculously harsh.

Lovely photos. Such a tragedy. My heart hurts for the residents who lost everything.

+ 1000 and unnecessary.

So extremely sad...I hope that all the 1000 missing found their way out (missing and not dead). I can't imagine how scary this
was for the people that live there.

The devastation is so heartbreaking. No place like it on earth. I‘m grateful I experienced this paradise. My heart goes out to everyone that experienced loss and for the loss of life, human, animal and flora, architecture…

ETA @Matata I‘m sorry your nephew and his family lost everything. I‘m sure as a doctor he is dealing with so much trauma on top of it all. Ugh!

Maui Divers Jewelry is giving 100% of online sales to Hawaii Red Cross disaster relief. They have locations all over Hawaii and they had a location in Lahaina on Front Street, gone now.

I have never been to Maui, but read Michener's Hawai'i many times, and much of the missionary section is set in Lahaina. (I grew up in a situation with limited access to books, so I read most books multiple times.) Anyway, Lahaina has always been a part of my imaginary geography. I'm so sad for the people who lost everything.

I remember the enormous banyan tree-- a marvel!
I hope it survives despite the damage it incurred, but it doesn't seem likely.

I hope your family is all okay and as comfortable as possible. The stories continuing to come out are horrific. Please share if you see reliable groups offering assistance that could use donations if you feel it would be within the rules here. (I don't imagine it would be an issue!)

Mine as well! I married a native Hawaiian who visits family regularly and we had just booked accommodations in Lahaina the day before the fires. Devastating for everyone who lost their loved ones and homes and sense of place and safety, but I’m also sad I won’t get to visit the vivid location from reading this book.
