I've been gleefully (but slowly) piercing my ears. It's a fun project for me, and I love the way I can customize (curate) my piercings to fit my ears. Do we all think our ears are a little weird? I do, so I play off that.

My next piercing in about 6 months was going to be my tragus, and the other tragus 12 to 18 months later. But. I've just read (and thank goodness I did) that understandably tragus do not like ear plugs in the ear. I hadn't thought of that, but am sadly reconsidering getting them pierced. You see, my @$$hole neighbors make noise (especially thru the summer) and I have shifts at work, so often lights out by 9pm (should be 8pm, really).

I'll put some of my spongey plugs in and see the anatomy of my ear canal, but was wondering if anyone has any experience with this? Damn! I have great tragus for multiple piercings too. Not that I was gonna do multiples, but I could.

Oooh this is fun!

I have basically every part of my ear pieced that my anatomy allowed (I lost count - but I have had ~30 piercings total)...including the left tragus.

Because the cartilage is so thick, it does really take a while to permanently heal. Like, think 6-9months. The earlier you switch out jewelry, the longer it will take.

Ear plugs, if you must wear them, will most likely slow down healing quite substantially, cause pain, and possibly infections. Ear plugs harbor bacteria, so they would definitely need to be changed daily. I would guess that they would have to be avoided until healing is done, at least the initial stage of healing.

If you do it, get a bar with a flat back (like the ones they use for labret piercings) - with internal threading. Anything else will surely cause irritation, like hoops or bars with beads on both ends.

I think a lot of this is anatomy dependent. I had to eventually remove my tragus because it started to migrate and I had issues with ear bud headphones, but many people don't. If you have a good piercer talk to them. I had a great one and he would steer me away from anything that didn't make sense with my anatomy and lifestyle.

I mean come on, look at that real estate!20210221_194753.jpg20210221_194732.jpg

OMG loooove the trio with opals! Beautifiul! It looks like your left ear has slightly more space

Ooooo, so glad you chimed in with your piercing knowledge then!!! Piercing whisperer :)

Right?? Lots of room! My piercer is very young and whilst a good piercer, at the most reputable piercing clinic in town, doesn't seem to have enough background, yet.

I can imagine it could be recipe for disaster, with infections, migration etc. The smallest 'opal' (synthetic) migrated and the trio are unevenly spaced now. It's ok, it's been a rocky road with the triplets (just the smallest).

All my piercings are always labret (flat backs). Dang! If I can't do them, I was thinking maybe a wee ear tattoo there. Small star or constellation or...something unique to me.

So happy to help! It isn't a body of knowledge I get to flex often  - esp now I am not as "cool" and had to take many of them out for corporate jobs...blergh...

And yeah, my guess is he is probably still building out his portfolio. Triplets like that are tricky I imagine. The margin for error w/ healing is teeny tiny!

Migration can happen for a lot of piercings...I really did have much less space with my tragus, and my piercer even warned me that it was closer to the surface than he'd like...but alas! I did it anyways. I think I had it for 2 years before I gave up from constant sensitivity / irritation.

I think metal is a factor too - like migration is like the first stage of rejection - my piercer knew I had sensitive skin and only used 18k gold for me to help prevent migration.

It could be worth having a convo with him, or being prepared for possible removal if the relationship goes south, so to speak. :P2

I think a tattoo would be cute! I know way less about tattoos, only have a few compared to my whopping history with piercings. I just know when they get teeny details can bleed over time, but a good artist can likely coach you through that! :)

I usually cut the spongies in half. What I'll do is do that and have her look at them in place. I was hoping for 2 in the left, and 1 in the right. Insertion and removal will be an issue too I guess.

I have seen some nice small tattoos, but my (almost) 55 year old ears might not weather them well or nicely? I know healing time for piercing takes longer, and stringent care is necessary. Sigh.

I'm no help at all but wanted to say that I love the look of your piercings. You look fabulous.

Thank you lovie! Kind of you to say!

I'm late to the game but who gives a fig? I like adornment.
Why else would I belong to PS. Piercings were just lobes really when I was young(er).

Just got this today, and am thinking I might be able to do tragus. I have August off, and @sshole20210315_165840.jpg
neighbor quiets down in the fall, so maybe August? My whole plan involved the tragus on both sides. Sigh. Maybe...

I had my tragus pierced many years ago & wore a tiny gold & diamond ring in it. I remember hearing the cartalige (sp) crunch as the needle went through. It took at least 9 months to heal & was tender the whole time it took to heal. I eventually took the ring out as well as all the other piercings except one in each lobe. I very occasionally wear some of the others but I can't get anything in the tragus now

I expect the tragus may take 12 to 18 months to heal. I had a triple cartilage piercing that is just now on the home stretch at 14 months. My age and stress level don't help I expect. I'm 102.

I'm sorry i have to ask ....
What part of the ear is the tragus?

Love your ear set up so far!
I have my left tragus pierced, it’s been about 10 years now. I remember it took closer to a year to fully heal but I have no issues with it now. I’m a nurse and have no issues with my stethoscope, and I use ear buds just fine. Definitely recommend the labret. I now have a tiny hoop in mine with no issues at all. I’m currently healing my conch :)

Good. To. Know!!!
Do I need this? No. Do I want this? D@mn right I do. You give me hope girl.

I’ve had my tragus pierced for 12ish years now! I wear a threaded flat back small diamond from Maria Tash and have no issues with earbuds either. I think mine took about 9 months to heal and I didn’t change the earring until probably well after 15 months. Originally I had a twist/screw earring.

Aftercare is important but really after the first few months the sensitivity went away and it was just about waiting for it to completely heal.

Then definitely do it! I never heard the pop noise or anything. And it really wasn’t all that painful :-)

Maybe I was lucky, or I just healed really fast - but I could wear in-ear buds within 12 weeks. I had it pierced with a flat back labret. Never had an issue and have had it for about 3 years now. The same with my conch piercings (2 in one ear). But then I had the daith done and that was a never ending drama for nearly a year. Healing is different for everyone, and every piercing. A few months of discomfort is worth it for the long term sparkles.

Most of my piercings have been smooth sailing (flat back labrets) except the smallest stud of the triplets. Drama queen too. If I even look at it funny... After the exemplary care (and I do mean exemplary) I was ready to yank it out, then it settled. I think it's in a thick spot or 3 in a row was too many for my ear.

I find the piercings verrrry painful. I feel pain pretty acutely. If I could toss back a whiskey in between, I would. The triplets had me biting on a stick (in my mind). Tragus are pretty. I'd be tempted if I was young to just do tragus.

The old adage “ you must suffer for beauty” is subjective In so many ways. Do what you want as you know what it entails an the risks.
