Hi all, I have a few questions on a diamond for an engagement ring I am thinking about purchasing and I was wondering if I could get some feed back.
First of all, the jeweler told me it is a transition cut, but the GIA report calls it a round brilliant. Is this normal?
And secondly, I am trying to determine what would be a good price on a "transition cut" diamond with the following the specs certified by GIA:
1.92 carat, H, VS1, Good cut, Good polish, Very good symmetry, Faint fluorescence, 8.17-8.26x4.64mm, table is 66%
The jeweler is wants $13.5K. Is this too good to be true? Just a normal price for a transitional cut of this caliber or what?
Thanks for any help!

GIA doesn't differentiate between transitional and modern round brilliant, so they will all say round brilliant. You are lucky to have a GIA report verifying color and clarity! H VS1 is wonderful and hard to find! I almost question it being transitional, though, because a 66 table is huge. I think maybe it is just an old round brilliant perhaps. Can you tell us the angles and depth percentage? How about the girdle? Do you have close up pictures of the stone?

It is facing up large for its weight, so I am expecting the depth to be low and possibly having a shallow crown angle.

diamondseeker2006,
Thanks for the reply! I have attached a picture of the diagram from the GIA report. And one picture of the diamond. Sorry it is of poor quality, I took it on my phone at the store and its the only one that some what turn out.
What do you make of it? Thanks again for your help!

Well, it does have chunky facets. The diamond is quite shallow but the crown angle isn't bad. Girdle is fine. Table is beyond my comfort zone because you see mostly a big flat surface and very little crown. I think if you looked at it and loved it, it would be okay, but it isn't going to have the light performance of a better cut stone. The price seems okay. A well cut modern round brilliant this size, color, and clarity would cost a lot more. I'd personally think I'd rather have a better cut stone, but I really can't judge well since I can't see good pictures of it.

Can't judge too much with the information you have given beyonr the color and clarity. But value is largely determined by the cut quality, and we need photos to help offer any opinions on that. It looks like it could work, or might not. Hard to judge.

Price seems good for the color/clarity, but the cut is the BIG BIG BIG unknown.

Hi,
Thank you so much for your input!
I texted my friend who went with me when I was shopping and he actually had a few extra pictures on his phone! I know they are not much better than the other pictures, but do they help at all to determine how good the cut is? What would you value this diamond at?
My girlfriend is really wanting something close to 2carats and for they clarity and color its by far the best deal I have found. I really need to just determine if the cut is good enough and worth the price of $13.5k. Thanks again for any input!!! :D

Well, it has the size of a 2 carat stone, and if size is her most important spec, and your budget is the price of this stone, then it might be worth it because you will have to go a lot lower in color and clarity to get an ideal cut modern round brilliant. But I would hesitate to buy this stone unless there is an unconditional return policy with full refund in case she doesn't like the stone.
