These questions sort of came up from a discussion in another thread

If I bought a ring here (in Canada) and planned to propose on vacation in Europe, could I expect to have any trouble at the border? For example, if they x-rayed my carry-on and saw it in its box, if my stuff was searched after landing or coming back to Canada? I suppose all this could be settled with an original purchase receipt, but I''d rather not get hassled in the first place.

Does anyone (mostly guys, who wouldn''t be wearing them at the time ;)) have any experience with bringing a newly-purchased ring across a border?

Get a "Customs Appraisal" BEFORE you exit Canada. This is evidence of ownership and possession before travelling with the jewelry. Since it is a personal jewelry item and not for resale you may travel into the EU with it and it will not pose a problem coming back to your home country. TAKE THE CUSTOMS APPRAISAL ALONG WITH YOU so that you have it upon re-entry.

A local valuer, appraiser, can give you a short summary report on the ring for this purpose. An insurance appraisal would work as well.

It would also be wise to get a time/date stamped photo of the ring. Your appraiser should be able to provide this for you.
