In shopping for an emerald, it seems as if the "squarish" shapes are most predominant today. In the past I used to think of an emerald as more rectangular.

Wasn't the most common traditional emerald shape something more like a 1:4 to 1:6 L/W ratio?

However, today it seems like most of the available emeralds are in the 1:15 to 1:3 range.

Is this a current style trend? Or, is there just a shortage of rectangular stones which are being cut??

My EC is unmistakenly a rectangle but it is a fatter one than most we saw (I don''t have the papers in front of me so I am not sure what my ratio is). We personally liked this look better. I also have fairly small hands (I am only 5''1") so I think a smaller ratio is more attractive on my hand. I think it is preference over what is available.

i think Tacori is right - my emerald cut is about a 1.46 ratio - i really love the true rectangular shape. not everyone agrees, so that''s just my 2c worth.

i think..choose what you love. if you like longer and skinnier, i''m sure you can find it, likewise if you want shorter/fatter.

We got a 1.4 ratio and I love it...I found many that were from 1.3 to 1.5, but like others have said, if you keep looking, you''ll find what you''re looking for.
