A few years ago we went to a house where the family set up the garage like a creepy operating theatre, and there was a ''doctor'' with a chainsaw getting ready to amputate a leg off of a victim on the operating table (pleading for help) . . . someone would come out of the garage and invite the kids in, in a sinister way . . . my kids were scared witless and actually started crying. It was a little TOO scary, they toned it down the next year.

That is going too far IMO

it didn''t take much to give me nightmares when I was a child, the coffin scene in the Bond movie Diamonds are Forever strangely enough

did it every time.

Yeah, that WAS going too far . . . my poor kids! I think they got the message though . . . no one would even come close and word was going up and down the street about that house . . .

I bet they were hanging their heads in shame and holed up in their house for a while, too embarrased to come out

I can really imagine that a child would find that terrifying. Did they go around the neighbourhood grovelling and offering snivelling apologies? I guess I can feel for them slightly, I suppose in their minds they were trying to be original and offer the kids something a bit different and realistic, not taking into account that the kids would be scared out of their wits by that " evil" man who cuts people up

You live and learn!

I dread Halloween as here in England firework night follows shortly after on November 5th. I have no objection to folk having a good time and using fireworks if they so desire, I just wish that they would contain it to November 5th only, not every weekend near it and take others into consideration. The amount of accidents and malicious attacks on people and animals rises every year and I really do dread it with the bangs going off all over the place every night for two weeks or so

We went all out with the decorations this year. We handmade tombstones and a 6 foot Grim reaper, strung lights around the windows and front door, set out a spooky doormat that made sounds when it was stepped on;I thought it looked very festive. The yard was a huge hit before the big night even came around. Just a few days ago some of the neighborhood kids were checking out our display and they happened to catch Nate outside so they were quick to congratulate him on such a job well done. The boy that lives down the road was even so cute as to ask if we''re rich. Of course Nate told him we weren''t "rich" exactly, but we don''t have any kids, so we have money to spend on ourselves. ;)

We''ve only been in our house for a couple of years, so each year we buy more items for our holiday displays. This year was bigger than last year, and I''m sure next year will be the same. We also have a next door neighbor that equally enjoys decorating, so we''ve turned it into a bit of a competition, although I don''t think neighbor knows this yet. :)

Last year we had about a hundred trick or treaters and we almost ran out of candy so I decided to be well prepared this year. Last week I stopped by Walmart and bought 21 bags of candy including: twix, almond joy, butterfingers, M&Ms, snickers, smarties, milky way, take 5, lollipops, double bubble, crunch, reese peanut butter cups, gummi bears...basically I strolled up and down the aisles and plopped anything I liked, into the cart. I pre-mixed all the goodies, and lined up what amounted to 3 buckets of candy in the entryway closet so we''d be able to swap out quickly when the masses descended upon us. I also squirreled away a small stash of our favorites so we''d be able to enjoy some treats ourselves.

For fun, my coworker and I dressed as convicts in black and white striped prison uniforms complete with shackles and a ball and chain so I was able to get double duty out of my costume. Nate picked up a ghoulish mask that lights up at the push of a button, and a long black robe. Together we prepared to face the onslaught of last year''s visitors combined with all of the new kids we knew had moved into the neighborhood. The doorbell first rang a bit before 6 and the last Trick or Treater snuck up at 9:09. In those 3+ hours we had 250 princesses, spidermen, and power rangers trudge up to our door, taking with them the equivalent of 3.5 buckets of candy. Nate also managed to make at least 10 of the smaller ones either cry or at least refuse to come near the door, even after he removed his mask ;) hehe Everyone seemed to get a kick out of all of the decorations, although the motion activated tombstone paired with the motion activated casket, paired with the pressure sensitive spooky sounds mat, light up skull on a plate, and strobe light, were a bit too much stimulation for some. Especially the two stoned adults that tried conning us out of candy around 9.

All in all, it was an awesome Halloween. We had a lot of fun and got a big kick out of the costumes and the comments. Can''t wait til next year ;)

We only got 4 kids

but they were pretty cute. I hope the neighbors at least like our carved pumpkins!

anyone else take pics of their decorations? last nite we forgot, DER!!! but we did take some from the year before.

each year i add more decor as well, RE was having a 1/2 off sale last year and i got a bunch of huge ''candle'' scenes, a haunted mansion, a graveyard and something else. displaying them is tricky in the dark though because i don''t want to light them since then they will burn down and be gone...so i just propped them up and put candles around them to light them.

The kids were screaming and laughing...I did say to fi...guess our kids won't be going trick-or-treating over there....

Chainsaws must be big around here. There were houses with chainsaws most every Halloween I can remember (no blades of course) as a kid. But I can't imagine anyone taking a little child to that house accross the street from me. I loved being 14 and scared out of my wits...I was never permitted to watch horror movies (I was such a nerd, but I did sneak to see Friday the 13th once) so Halloween was great for me.

Friday I went on a haunted hayride on a farm which drops you off at a corn maze where around every corner there's a madman chasing you down with his chainsaw...my girlfriend fell in the mud, we were screaming, it was great! There were folks with little ones and we did shake our heads, again not for little guys.

No one was ashamed that's for sure!!

It's so interesting how Halloween seemingly has changed since we were kids etc. Greg and I were talking last nite about what a big deal it was on our 'blocks' when we were kids, where there were lots of families with kids and decor was huge and we'd walk the neighborhood and come home with a huge trough of candy etc. Parents would pick through it and discard anything homemade or opened etc. Typical stuff!

But now it seems like it's not like it used to be. Around here they do mall Halloween where kiids walk around and get candy from retailers, trick or treating at the mall, how wrong is that?! And Alj was telling me in her town they actually do trick or treat the SATURDAY BEFORE Halloween. So what happens on actual Halloween?! I thought that was odd too.

We got around 30 kids last nite, in groups mostly, and parents were like 'not seeing many kids are you?'. We told each other last nite that by the time our kids are born god only knows what ToT would have turned into. I told Greg, well if I have to PAY or BEG every one of our neighbors to be home and hand out candy, then walk our kid down the street to have the REAL original experience that we both had, then I will. We'll SO not be taking the kids to the mall or anything like that.
14.gif

I think it's so sad...we were recounting all these great memories we had about Halloween as kids, who decorated the house the best on the block, who would dole out warm apple cider on the porch, who would hide in the shadows and jump out at you etc etc. And now...it's bright lights and happy times at the mall.

I have noticed a similar trend...not hoards of kids like I remember.

I only saw plug in electric jack o'' laterns. Ours was the only real one I saw.

I used to make my own halloween costumes and me and my dad made candied apples every year and gave them out wrapped in wax paper.

Nowadays you wouldn''t let your kid eat that because there might be poison in it.

I can say that Halloween is still big at the bars. Saturday before Halloween there are usually live bands and lots of people in costume.

I don''t want to make total freaks out of my kids but mall trick-or-treating is out of the question. We''ll be at home bobbing for apples (Oh, I used to bob for apples in my backyard too)

Last year we had tons of kids, this year not so many for some reason. I have lots of candy left over that I need to either throw away or have my bf hide from me.

I dont know where everyone lives but here in Vegas this was the warmest Halloween I can remember. Usually, Halloween night is when it gets chilly around here, not this year!

Hey! Mall trick or treating is not that bad. Sure, it''s not the real thing, but I don''t think Mall trick or treating is designed for the older children. I took Alyssa to the mall yesterday for trick or treating. She was dressed a little kitty cat and was adorable!
5.gif

It just makes it easier and safer for the young ones. Majority of the kids there were under the age of 5. It''s hard to walk from house to house if you''re only 2 or 3 years old. After one block, they''ll be tired. I do think that if you''re older than 5, then it''s no fun.

Alyssa had a blast yesterday and by the time we finished walking both floors of the mall, she was exhausted! I''m very proud of her since most of the 2-3 year olds were in strollers. She actually walked the entire mall, both times! Although half way through, she said she was tired and wanted me to carry her, but I told her if I carried her, she wouldn''t get anymore candy, so she continued to walk. I did help her hold her pumkin bag while we were walking from store to store. She insisted she held it herself when we went in, so she could get the candy. It was the cutest thing!
5.gif

We won''t be doing the mall thing next year though. Sam and I didn''t really like it. Last year we went to Seacliff in SF and had a blast with Alyssa. She was a baby chick last year and we had to carry her the whole time so people barely got to see her costume. This year she received a lot of attention since she was walking the whole time. I can''t wait for next year!

Here are some of our decorations leading to our front door. The witch sign has a green blinking nose and reads "The witch is in." We also have tin pumpkins with candles hanging from the flower pot hooks around the wrap porch. On Halloween we light the candles, and the glowing is so pretty the way it lights up the front porch.

Last year we had one of those witches that flies into the porch post. My kids made a huge sign that said "Don't drink and fly." It was cute, but I did not get a picture of it, duhhhhhhhh.

Anyone else annoyed with the teens that didn''t even bother dressing up but STILL expected candy? Most the kids didn''t say "trick or treat" but I made them before I handed them anything and only 1/3 even said thank you. There were some cute, polite kids but I guess the rude brats stick out in my mind more. I did think it was cute because one set of parents kept yelling "stay off their grass" (Not that FI and I would have cared at all) probably because we were sitting on our porch. I thought it was cute though. (we passed out M&Ms and Kit Kats)

My husband was in charge of buying the candy for our trick-or-treaters this year, and one of the candies he bought was called Take 5. I think it''s by Hershey but don''t know for sure because I already ate them all. I made goody bags for the kids but ended up taking all of these candy bars out of there because they are just so good! It''s chocolate, pretzel, and something else. It sounds disgusting, actually, but I was in hog heaven last night.

For our Halloween, our teenagers did the decorating and a good job of it, too. Cobwebs everywhere, spiders hanging, real pumpkins were carved--not plug ins...we also put stakes in the ground that were lights with skulls where they lit up. It was a fun twist on lighting the little goblins path to my porch for the goodies...Our 16 1/2 year old dresses up as a ghoul that appears to be dead, only to "awaken" right when a goblin is approaching for their candy...then...BOO! We have the scary music going, fog machine going, strobe lights are flashing...its all done in harmless fun and was totally fun. Yes, a few of our little visitors were too scared to come for candy and my 15 yr old would calm them and then go get them a treat so they wouldn''t miss out, so everyone was happy. And yes, we had several teens this Halloween show up...most in costume...most were polite. The oddest sighting was 2 grown men--in my opinion-- were out trick or treating with the kids. One of the men was about 24 or 25 and had fuzz on his face like he needed to shave. The other man was older, old enough to have a little grey on his temples! I mean, hello? This is a kids holiday...at least the house to house part is. If you are an adult and want to go to a Halloween party that''s ok, but door to door for candy??? Er...I don''t think so...

Unfortunately, none.

I believe in halloween the old fashion way. Full sized candy bars, etc. - and to scare the kids.

I have had some really great years depending where I lived. $100 in candy (or more), some simple set-ups; and I was the talk of the kids in the areas (who else gave out full sized candy bars). Also, watching a kid go spat against the wall in shock was cool too.... (my best year, I sat in a black felt outfit in a dark corner of the porch. When they knocked on the door I jumped up and made various sudden noise.... Splat and screams (I should have worked for Monsters Inc and collected screams...). All was forgiven when I pulled out my pot of full sized candy bars (a lot of kids like getting scarred like that).

Anyway, I moved here. Bought my candy. Set-up. And not a single kid knocked on the door. Second year. I bought less candy. Set-up. And not a single kid knocked on the door. In fact. No trickertreaters on this steet at all. Thus. Halloween has passed me by.

You must live in Wenatchee....cuz some guy did that to us about 4-5 years ago! My son, who was about 7-8yrs old then, didn't jump, but got into a defensive position to strike the guy with his plastic sickle (he was the grim reaper then and again this year!) and was totally ready to fight back! It was hysterical!
I gave out snickers, M & M's, Milky Way Bars, and tootsie rolls! I have so much left over that I'll probably gain 5lbs before the real holiday eating even begins! Our front door is pretty much on the beach, so only the kids we know come to the door because it's a little dark and out of the way..so I give them lots of candy!

Our pumpkins started to rot within 2-3 days! Damn Santa Ana winds...This time of the year always makes me miss the 4 definite seasons!

i always pass the kind I can stand to eat if they don''t get passed out!

Last night''s was no exception...up there on top of the list has to be a Reeses something. Now they have all kinds of reeses candies which suites me since i love them, i bought the cup and the stick. and i included a mini twizzler and mini tootsie pop.
