Re: Trying to choose the perfect diamond for my e-ring!!! HE

well both seem good enough without seeing any pics. whats the total budget? does she really want roound only? what kind of setting? is she color sensitive? do you ave links to pics of the diamonds?

eta because if you are flexible, you can get a lot of bang for your buck. weve all been watching this particularly beautiful asscher
http://beta.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/Asscher-cut/1.02-carat-K-color-VVS2-clarity-sku-156914

or of course theres lots of options. but of course if she needs a round. get her a round

I found these on Blue Nile and they don't offer any pics of either diamonds. Just the info on the certs.
Preferably Round or Princess cut. As far as color, nothing below and H.

Btw, thanks for your reply. I appreciate it :twirl:

Re: Trying to choose the perfect diamond for my e-ring!!! HE

oh ok. Well, think of it this way. Would you spend so much on anything else before seeing a picture of it?

Not to mention they wont give you Idealscope images, so you wont be able to address how well it performs

Re: Trying to choose the perfect diamond for my e-ring!!! HE

I'd say the first one over the second although they both are very close. However, I'd never suggest buying a diamond online without seeing pictures/videos of the stone.

Here's another option:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1540574.asp

Video:

http://beta.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/Round-cut/0.81-carat-I-color-SI1-clarity-Excellent-cut-sku-178339

I'd put this on hold asap if you're interested. It scored a .6 on the HCA. I'd also chat with the gemologist to make sure it's eye clean and request an idealscope image.

I wouldn't honestly. And you're right.

I guess that's why I needed opinions, Ive never ordered online before so Im just going based off of the info that's given and using the HCA tool as extra help.

So do you think it's worth me even spending this amount for not being able to see the diamond itself? You think the price is too high for me to be making a purchase for it online?

Re: Trying to choose the perfect diamond for my e-ring!!! HE

oh no, i think buying online is a very good idea. And I think the right vendor will give you enough info to make a good decision. Id say the majority of people on this site bought at least one diamond online, and are very satisfied. But you want to know what exactly you are buy, and how well it performs. Thats why the HCA is a good inclusion/ exclusion tool, but its only the start.

I think if you got it from James allen you would be fine. They give you actual pictures (and VIDEO if you sign up to there new website beta.jamesallen.com) and will pull you some for free, give you Idealscope images, and tell you if its a good stone or not. so you know exactly what you are buying, what it looks like, and how it performs.

thats a fabulous choice and id bet you its eye clean. If you pull this and 2 others (h's if youd like) they can tell you how it compares to the H's in terms of color. It may be a high I (the lower in color you get the wider the range of color) so it may not have really any noticeable tint. Plus, I is still considered colorless

Re: Trying to choose the perfect diamond for my e-ring!!! HE

this stone is from brian gavin, their "Blue", I know its an I and you want an H, but the thing about these stones is that they have flour. And they make sure that the flour has no negative effects on the stone. So that means, it only gets the positive effect of making the stone look bigger.

Also, you get a slight PS discount here, (and at james allen) as well

Assuming your budget for the stone is about 3k heres a nice princess from whiteflash.

Without photos or images, we can't tell you which of the Blue Nile diamonds is better. GIA rounds the numbers on their grading report, so it's hard to say just from looking at a GIA report how well the proportions will work together. That's why it's important to view the diamond in person before you buy it, and only buy from a place that has a good return policy. Diamonds with shallower pavilions may show obstruction. Most diamonds with a 40.6 pavilion will look fine, and many people here prefer a shallower diamond. However, if not cut well, shallow diamonds can show obstruction That's something you'll need to ask the gemologist about in the case of the JA stone. With the Blue Nile stone, my advice would be to take the diamond to an independent appraiser, that is, an appraiser who does not sell diamonds or jewelry -- we can help you find one. Return the stone to Blue Nile if it doesn't check out. You can read more about diamond cut and proportions here https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/diamond-cut

Does Blue Nile sell AGS stones? I honestly don't know. But, in general, AGS's cut grade is stricter than GIA. Blue Nile has a good return period, so if you order one of the two GIA stones, you can always get it appraised and return it if the stone is not to your liking. The other thing that would be helpful would be for you to post all of the numbers from the GIA or AGS report for any Blue Nile diamonds you are considering:
Crown angle
Pavilion angle
Depth percentage
Table percentage
Stars percentage
Lower girdle facet percentage
Crown percentage
Pavilion percentage.
Take a look at the knowledge section in the toolbar on this page to learn how to read a GIA or AGS report
ETA: I see you've posted crown and pavilion angles, and table and depth percentages for the two GIA stones; but I'm curious about the other numbers for those two diamonds.

Re: Trying to choose the perfect diamond for my e-ring!!! HE

Bluenile has a 30 day no hassle return policy. That gives you plenty of time to view the stone in all sorts of environments and take it to an independent appraiser if you like. I wouldn't even have it set until I knew I loved the stone.

Re: Trying to choose the perfect diamond for my e-ring!!! HE

Well thats ok. You arent out of luck. there signature diamonds provide more info than the other ones.
here is an I with good enough clarity that you dont have to worry if its eye clean or not
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?filter_id=0&pt=sig#diamonds_pid=LD03004809

Those have pics (if you go look at the report PDFs ) and a lot of info for those.

Thanks! So far so good. The lower girdle facet should be a number between 70 and 85, though, not 3.5 It's a tricky number to find on the report.

thats a fabulous choice and id bet you its eye clean. If you pull this and 2 others (h's if youd like) they can tell you how it compares to the H's in terms of color. It may be a high I (the lower in color you get the wider the range of color) so it may not have really any noticeable tint. Plus, I is still considered colorless

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I actually only tried blue nile because I got approved for financing the e-ring. Im going to try with James Allen because I am being helped this very moment through chat and shes already found soome realy great diamonds for me. Thank you for your help. And if I dont get approved for James Allen financing, which of the 2 diamonds listed above would you go for?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately I didn't get approved for the James Allen financing. Would you say finding an AGS certified diamond would help a little more?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is all I could get on both diamonds:

0.71
Crown angle: 33.5
Pavilion angle: 40.8
Depth percentage: 60.3
Table percentage: 57%
Stars percentage: 50%
Lower girdle facet percentage: 3.0
Crown percentage: 14.5
Pavilion percentage.: 43.0

0.77
Crown angle: 34.5
Pavilion angle: 40.6
Depth percentage: 61.5
Table percentage: 56%
Stars percentage: 50%
Lower girdle facet percentage: 3.5
Crown percentage: 15.0
Pavilion percentage.: 43.0

Thanks! So far so good. The lower girdle facet should be a number between 70 and 85, though, not 3.5 It's a tricky number to find on the report.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Could it be this:

0.71Lower girdle facet: 80%

0.77Lower girdle facet: 75%

Yup. Those are the numbers I was looking for. No red flags or oddball numbers on either diamond, just from the numbers. And both stones are VS2 clarity, so they *should* be eye clean. Each person's eyes are different, though, so make sure you examine the diamond from all angles to make sure you can't see any inclusions from the side or top with your naked eye.

If I was choosing, I'd go with the .77 carat simply because it's the larger of the two.

ETA: Though my personal preference would probably be the .71 because that stone's proportions are closer to my visual preference for diamonds -- larger table, longer lgf's, shallower depth. But that's what my eye tends to prefer -- everyone is different. That's why we can only point out any red flags or concerns we see, but can't tell you which diamond you might prefer in person.

If you do order one of these diamonds, make sure you take a few days to look at it in all lighting conditions at all times of the day. Look for inclusions that show up in some lights but not others, e.g., black spots. With VS2 clarity, as I mentioned, that shouldn't be a problem, but you need to check thoroughly, especially if you and your girlfriend are fairly young and have good up-close vision. Also look at the way the diamond sparkles -- it should be bright, and show even sparkle and fire -- no dead or dull spots -- as you move the diamond around.

And I strongly encourage you to meet with an independent appraiser to make sure that the stone you got matches the report -- Blue Nile is an honest company, but mistakes can be made. Independent appraisers typically charge approx. $100 -- $200 last time I checked, which is a few years ago. It depends somewhat on what part of the country you are in. Or if you are in the U.S.!

I think Im gonna' go ahead with that choice. As stated, Blue Nile has a great return policy if I am not satisfied what so ever and I have enough time to get the diamond appraised :twirl:

So you do believe that both of these diamonds will perform well?

And THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP AND INPUT, I really appreciate it!

You're welcome - see my comments that I added to my last post about preferences and performance. No red flags with either diamond; It's really up to your eyes at this point!

I don't see anything about this one that would make me personally decrease the ct weight by this much. As Lula said there were no red flags with the others stones, it's more a matter of proportion preference. It's likely that by not having much diamond viewing experiences that you won't be able to appreciate the slight visual differences between the stones in real life anyway. I would stay with the three that were previously recommended.

The recommendations from James Allen? Im only looking through Blue Nile because I got approved for financing through them.

Re: Trying to choose the perfect diamond for my e-ring!!! HE

roxx, I'm assuming that AGS stone is from Blue Nile, is that correct? That's a very nice stone, but to be honest, I think the .77 GIA stone you posted earlier is a better choice. It's just not worth going down in size from a 3/4 diamond to a 1/2 carat.

Yes the AGS stone was from Blue Nile as well

I guess I'm just afraid to follow through with the purchase not having been able to see the actual diamond or other reports.
So you'd definitely go with the 0.77 over 0.71 ?

Both had the same clarity characteristics listed on report as well:

0.71: Cloud, crystal

0.77: Crystal, cloud

Re: Trying to choose the perfect diamond for my e-ring!!! HE

Yes, I'd go with the .77 and take a look at in person. Blue Nile has a great return policy if there is a problem with the diamond. Let us know what you think of it when you receive it. We can give you some suggestions on appraisers in your area and also how to evaluate the diamond in different lighting conditions.

So I contacted Blue Nile because I had these 2 diamonds on hold. Unfortunately when the 0.77 ct was input into their system there was an error in the price. So they are unable to give it to me for the price that I saw it for which was $2823. The actual price of the diamond is $3640.

That being said, I am left with the option of choosing th 0.71 listed above or SEARCH all over again
