My boyfriend recently bought me an unusual ring from a vintage clothing store. I've never seen anything like it, and can't seem to find this type of setting anywhere online. The gems are hinged in the setting in a way that allows them to swivel 180 degrees, allowing me to rotate the gems to different directions to create different looks. Does anyone know what this type of setting is called?

Sorry if the stones aren't real - this ring came with no identifying markings, and I have no idea what the stones are. I'm mainly trying to figure out the type of setting.

Your ring appears to be a piece of costume jewelry from the 1950s or 60s. You see a variety of pieces with "action" movements from that time period. I own a flower brooch where the petals "fold" open and shut. You also see pieces that "tremble" because they are mounted on springs --- I have a pink and blue poodle pin that wiggles. It's unusual to see a ring from this time period because they (generally) weren't made from high quality materials.

You may want to ask the moderators to move your question to the "Antique and Vintage Jewelry" board. You might get more responses there.

Enjoy your ring --- it's really fun and unusual.

Cheers,

Groucho

Thank you so much for the response! I've been digging everywhere online for an answer, and now I finally feel like I have some idea of the history of this ring. Thank you!!

Its a pretty inventive concept to have a moveable ring. Enjoy it!
