I am looking for some nice turquoise earrings to wear at my sister's teal and brown wedding this July. I will be one of her Bridesmaids so thought turquoise would be a nice match to my dress. I like the robin's egg blue look without any visible veins or flecks, just the smooth blue. So far I am drawn to the Sleeping Beauty and Persian/Iran natural types. I also prefer dangle earrings. I am looking to spend about 1k.

Does anyone have any recommendations of where I can purchase something like this?

So far the closest I have found are these ones for $895: http://www.etsy.com/listing/112945081/huge-sleeping-beauty-turquoise-18k-solid What do you all think of them? Can I find a better deal someplace else?

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions. xoxo

It's beautiful, my father is a turquoise businessman, I know something about turquoise. I like this one. :D

I've had these saved in my favorites for a while on Etsy.
I think they are classy and versatile and a good price.

She also has it in a slightly longer version. You can get it in sterling silver or 14k gold. I have seen gold plated in her sold items so she may be able to do that... Gives you gold tone without having to spend too much.

I don't know who are trustworthy Etsy vendors who sell turquoise but I second the caution to do your homework. There are many levels of treatment and / or claims about origin that may or may not be true. Like everywhere else, there are both great and less than good vendors on Etsy.

Angela: it just occurred to me that a while ago, someone was looking for turquoise for a simple necklace, I believe. She asked questions and a bunch of different suggestions were made. It might have been someone here named Upgradeable, but in any case, if you do a search for turquoise, the site should return links to the recent threads I'm talking about with likely leads for you.

Btw, I love those earrings you linked to. They are chic and elegant.

I love those earrings and the colour is gorgeous BUT what do you know about Turquoise? I don't know much but from what I do know, it can be dyed, reconstituted and all sorts of other horrible things! I think that natural Turquoise can be very expensive but I have no idea how to test this at home (if that's even possible).

Are you open to other ideas for stones that might be less costly? If you also don't mind "costume" jewellery you might be able to get some silver earrings with blue agates or chalcedony or something.

I have dealt with this vendor before, and he is easy to work with and the briolettes are gorgeous. He has untreated Sleeping Beauty turquoise, if you want to be sure you are getting the real thing.

On the other hand, if you aren't fussy about turquoise treatments, you can't beat the eBay prices.

OP: I stand corrected - it wasn't Uppy who was looking, it was you Flygirl, wasn't it? Do you know the thread I'm talking about where you were asking about turquoise and people provided you links to various sellers? Am I right, or did I just make that whole thing up?

I can't believe that person wants $895 for those earrings. Anyway, you could always have a pair made. Or buy a vintage sterling ( or gold) pair from Ebay or something. You'd be surprised how nice the turquoise in some of the vintage pieces can be.

Are you set on turquoise or are you looking for something turquoise colored? If you are willing to look at other stones, I would recommend gem silica (chrysacolla). Turquoise is sensitive to acids and chemicals and can become discolored. Gem silica can be ridiculously expensive but there are also some reasonably priced stones out there.

Gem quality gem silica can be hard to find though. I've searched before because I like the look.

Thank you all for the replies and input. To answer your questions, yes I am only looking for turquoise now because it's also my baby's birthstone and I've always just really loved the stone and am drawn to it. I'm part Choctaw Native American and my parents live in Arizona so that has something to do with it as well. Plus the robin's egg blue color of the turquoise from the Sleeping Beauty mine in Arizona especially is the PERFECT match to my Bridesmaids dress! Again, I don't want any noticeable matrix/spots/flaws in the earrings. Only the natural, flawless, pure blue in a large pair of dangle earrings. Which I am finding out is not the easiest task! ;-) I want them to be very special, elegant and fitting to wear at my sister's wedding so I am not overly concerned about the price. I mostly just want the best quality I can get for my money but still not be outrageously expensive either like these $28k+ ones from Van Cleef & Arpels! OMG http://www.vancleefarpels.com/us/en/product/3104/Rose de Noël earclips, small model

I asked the vendor mentioned in my original post for an earshot of her 15 carat $895 earrings. Here it is: https://img1.etsystatic.com/011/0/22209825/icm_fullxfull.24175957_c4d7b02y940kg4kocc4o.jpg You can better see how BIG they are and how pretty the color. However, I ended up NOT buying them based on what my jeweler friend here in Japan had to say which is,

"Dear Angela, the earrings look OK, the problem is the hole in the stone, turquoise is only 6.5 Moh's scale and usually if its cheap its because they soak it in glue first so it doesn't crack !!!!

But, the color is good and price too, I can get good turquoise but it is not cheap , I'm going to a big Jewellery trade show at the weekend so can have a look if you still need ?
......."

So, I am currently waiting to see what he comes up with! hehe I will let you all know when I find something. If you know of any other good links or places I could look for earrings that fit my description above please let me know ASAP. Thanks again ever so much for helping me. This site is the best! xoxo

Firstly, I'd love to know how he is able to determine treatment from a single photograph. Nobody can do so with such surety and if he can, then he has a skill that even the best gemmologist in the world does not. Secondly, I am wary of his offer. It gives the impression of his discouraging your purchase because he wants to make the sale himself!

ALL turquoise are sealed with resin, and I mean ALL. This is because turquoise is porous and this is done to protect the gem from discolouration and from soaking up oils and other dirt too easily. In a sense, it is a type of glue but not in the strictest sense. Wax is a more accurate term. If he is able to get you an unwaxed turquoise, it will cost you an arm and a leg (in addition to its extreme difficult of finding) and you must know how to care for it carefully.

Next up - to have a dangle like that, the turquoise must somehow be attached to the metal so a hole must be drilled and then glue applied. There is no way around this unless you "claw" the turquoise on, the same way it is set in a ring, then there is no need to drill and glue.

Thanks for your reply Chrono! I am not too picky about the dangle. I actually like the look of a bezel setting around the stones like that of my friends here: http://flic.kr/p/dQoS6Y or here: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8355/8423934034_1f076f1b00_o.jpg (I'm still not quite sure how to get the link to work, argh!) Anyway, THOSE are the ones that inspired me to find a pair of my own too, just without the noticeable spots/matrix.....

Would love any and all help of where else to look! ;-)

Can you save the attachment onto your hard drive and link the attached picture from there? We cannot access a direct email attachment.

Angelainjapan - have you looked at the suggestions that people have given you for alternative earrings further up this thread?

Yes I have, LD! :-) But none have quite fit my description and price range or have caught my eye yet! Around 1-2k for flawless, nice blue dangle/drop (not chandelier style) earrings is what I am hoping for so fingers crossed! I kinda like all these ones on eBay but would rather not purchase from there! You can kind of get a sense of my style though. (The rose ones just because my baby girl's middle name is Rose, but I like the teardrop shape or rounded like my friends earrings I linked above actually!)

Thanks again for any help and or suggestions while I'm looking around.....xoxo
