I have looked through this forum quite a bit, and it's been very helpful so far. Obviously the forums contain a ton of information, so forgive me if some of my questions have been answered a bunch of times. This is my first time doing anything with rings and diamonds, so everything I know (not much) has been learned in the past couple months.

I am looking for an engagement ring that is, in a word, twisty. I haven't been able to find many of these, but one has really stuck out for me - the Bedazzle from Mark Schneider (left). I was able to find a similar ring from Robbins Brothers (right), and both are pictured below. I'm not set on something exactly like this, but that's the idea I'm going for. So I'm open to similar twisty settings.

My goal is to stay under $3000 for the complete ring, and I have been working with Trice Jewelers in Denver to accomplish this. They sent out the pictures posted above to an overseas vendor, and they can custom make something similar for $1050 in 14K white gold. The sketch they sent me is shown below, and I am working on getting a CAD drawing as well. As shown, it's designed for a 0.5 to 0.75 ct center stone.

I would like to stick with a local store for both the setting and stone just due to convenience for servicing, cleaning, etc. I have read about the advantages and disadvantages of online vs. B&M stores, and I am pretty convinced I will be purchasing both from the same source. I haven't talked with the jeweler about the center stone yet, so when that time comes I will research online to see what the price differences are.

I of course would prefer to hold the ring before I purchase it, but unfortunately that's not how it works with a custom ring. One thing I was thinking about was purchasing the ring from Robbins Brothers just to hold it and talk about possible changes I would make with the local jeweler. Then I would return it.

I guess I am just looking for any advice or criticism on how I am thinking about doing this. Also, any thoughts on the sketch they sent me? I don't really know what to look for in terms of a good or bad design, what I would change, differences from the original Bedazzle, etc. I mainly just want to bounce ideas off someone besides me and the guy selling me the ring. :wink2:

Thanks in advance!

My honest OP is I"m just not a fan of the design. Did you GF specifically pick this out? I do like the twist design but in the rings you linked too it is only twisted on one side. The other side loops around and I think that is what I dont' like. It is alot going on and just doesn't seem balanced to me.

Would you be open to having the twist carry though the entire ring?

I think you are going about this... backwards. First find the center stone, then the setting. I completely agree with purchasing both setting and stone from the same source but I would go to a trusted online vendor for both... not a local shop. I have a local shop that I love and trust. I buy small items and I go there for minor repairs/polishing etc. The selection, the pricing, the variety, the quality, etc... can't be found in my local stores.

I do like the setting but I would go with a twist throughout... not the loop concept. Though if this is a specific design that your GF loves then by all means keep that idea!

This one is twisty in a symmetrical way.

If this is what your girlfriend wants, then by all means, get it for her. However, if she's just told you she likes 'twisty' rings or all you have noticed about the rings she gravitates towards is that they look 'twisty,' there are a lot more interpretations of that than the knot-style you are focusing on.

Other ideas, all under $1k, which leaves you between $2k-$2.5k for the center stone:

James Allen has a LOT of center stone options, and there are others around here who are great at finding you good options to choose from. You may want to register and play around with the beta JA site, it's pretty great for those who want to really get a feel for the setting and diamonds they have: http://beta.jamesallen.com
