Uneven Prongs

My fiance gave me my ring in August. He bought the diamond and setting separately and had a jeweler set it. I wasn't happy with the setting because it wasn't centered, it looked like the jeweler just pulled out one prong and shoved the diamond in. When I took it back to have it reset, it was centered; however, it looks like the prongs are uneven and different sized. The ring is a princess cut set in V-Prongs. The jeweler said it's hard to set a diamond in a V-Prong and it can't be perfect. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but 2 of the prongs look really thin and doesn't fully cover the corners. I'm sad to say I haven't been wearing it because I'm scared the diamond will fall off. Is there anything I can do?? Retipped? Replace the head? I don't know any good setters in NYCphoto_2_6.jpgphoto_1_4.jpg

Hi mkwong,
Wow, that's a shame.
I agree that "V" prongs are very tough to get right. I have seen a lot of that type of prong that had to pass inspection because you have to be more forgiving on the tight details with that type of design.
Fixing the prongs may be an option, but it might be necessary for a jeweler to rebuild the head.
Does the place that made the ring have any other princess cut rings you can look at to see what the prongs on those look like?

The photos show that it's a very pretty ring- but on my monitor I can't see the prongs in detail.

I can't see the prongs in your picture but I"m automatically set back at the excuse of 'It's hard'. So? That's why you're hiring a pro to do it, right?

Take it somewhere else and ask them to evaluate the work. I can't really tell you much on what to do to fix it without actually seeing the piece but anything is possible. It may be simple enough or it may involve replacing the head but, whatever the case, it's not THAT damn hard. If he/she isn't up for the job or there's some fundamental defect that makes it not work properly they should have declined or explained the problem to you. Saying it's hard after the fact as some sort of excuse is just plain unprofessional.

Your ring and diamond are gorgeous. I would ask around and find another jeweler that people trust in your area and have them look at it for you.

Is the ring insured? You absolutely need insurance on it. We have recently seen some chipped corners on princess cuts and of course, any diamond can be lost or damaged.

Thanks everyone. The place where it was set was in the diamond district in NYC, I'm not sure which store to go to have it checked out because they all seem shady. Does anyone know a reputable repair shop in NYC or in Queens, NY?
