Unsure of my eternity band :(

I recently purchased a custom made band from IDJ.

I have specifically asked for the prongs to be made very close together so that the outline of the round diamond is very clear- I'm not sure if you guys would understand what I mean.

I even made illustrations to show what I meant to Luann and she assured me that it could be done! She sent me photos today and it doesn't seem to be the case

Do you guys think that this can be rectified? :wink2:

Here's one of the images I showed Luann....what do you guys think? =)

Did you consider a single prong eternity setting? where there is just one larger prong in between each stone?
IDJ has some of these on their website.
I can't tell what "style" of prongs/setting this is- but I see they have "U" prongs, Lucida style (looks like an eternity trellis setting,) airline, etc.

ETA- I see almost no difference between the 2 pictures you posted. I would need to see the back of the ring on the bottom to even know that they aren't the same ring- as it looks like the ring on the bottom has the prongs further apart on the left side of the stone in the middle- in other words, the set of prongs on the left look further apart than the set of prongs your arrow is pointing to- making me think it could be a perspective issue.

It looks to me to be a normal rendition of a shared prong eternity band. I don't know how large each stone is but I do think the stone's size has some bearing on its presentation in this type of setting. I also think that the prongs are placed to insure the structural integrity of the ring.

However, since you did provide a picture of what you wanted, I'd give them a call to discuss it. I think they are very customer service oriented and would work very hard to make sure that you are pleased. Personally, I think your new ring is gorgeous but it's your ring and it needs to please you.

The exact same thing happened to me a few years ago! They redid the ring for me, but it ended up with structural issues so I upgraded to a different ring entirely.

Now looking back, I would have kept the first one they made. The slightly "boxier" style feels safer to me now, like the diamonds are less exposed and risk less coming loose.

This was my ring:

This is very similar to what they first made:

I currently have a 4 prong 5 stone from them and I love it, super sturdy and sparkly. I hope to upgrade it to a full eternity in the boxier style (or bar set, not sure yet) in the future.

Oh dear. They are 8 pointers, shared prongs.

Let me show you another illustration. I have this thing about the shape of the outline of the ring, may be even a bit pedantic!! I have seen a 7 pointer eternity that has exactly what I like- which I have also showed her and she assured me it could be done.

And she's already sent me the ring! :blackeye:
I've emailed them, let's see what they say.

Orchid Lei,

Yes you totally get what I mean! Boxy is the word. Unfortunately I am currently based in SIngapore and they have already Fedex-ed it to me; I really don't want to spend more money on the necessary postage and insurance

Could you tell me what problems you ran in with in terms of structural integrity? My ring is an 8pointer- what was yours?

My ring was 7 pointers. 3 stones were ever so slightly smaller than the others, so they came loose in no time. One was actually spinning between the prongs. :( I was so bummed out because I LOVED this ring. I really do think I got unlucky though and I'm pretty sure I would still buy from IDJ.

I also understand being in another country, I'm from Canada, so dealing with customs was also a PITA...

I've found that with IDJ, you have to show them EXACTLY what you want, down to the very picture and even setting. They use Unique Settings for their stock pieces, so check their website and pick out the EXACT setting you want.

I really really like the look of your ring! Pity it came loose :snore:
Did they ship it out to you before you even had a look at it? How did they settle the extra shipping/ insurance/ tax?

I asked for a picture before they shipped out.

I was the type of person not to speak up for what I want before ("it will do!" I told myself) regarding my jewelry and I was always disappointed. I wanted to make sure I LOVED the ring I was purchasing, so I spoke up, even though I felt really bad because they had charged me a ridiculously low price, like you wouldn't believe.

So they redid the ring after I showed them the EXACT look I was going for: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-years-day-wedding-band.104742/

When the stones came loose the first time, they charged me nothing to ship it back (I did have to pay myself to ship it out, but it about 20 bucks, so not too bad).

When they came loose again, they offered me to upgrade, so that's why I went with a 4 prong 5 stone because I wanted safety above all. They gave me a great price again.

I inquired last year for an upgrade I was considering, and their prices went up significantly, but they are still very competitive. If you want perfect workmanship, they offer to upgrade their bench for 200$, last time I checked.

I hope you like your ring anyway!

I think this picture makes it clear what you mean: you want the shared prongs to be almost right next to each other in between the diamonds, rather than spaced out to hold the diamond at either side. From what Orchid Lei is saying, I think your way might not be structurally sound...I know the issue is not getting exactly what you asked for, though. You are definitely right to email back, and definitely show them that second picture with your ring and the ring you wanted to emulate. I worry that if they end up redoing it how you want it aesthetically, the diamonds won't be secure enough. Sorry I don't really have a solution for you, just my $0.02!

I requested the same thing when I got my eternity made...I was told that the integrity of the ring would be lost with the prongs so close together. I would check if that is why they made it the way they did.
