Update and More questions!!

Hi everyone,

First I would like to thank everyone for all your input over the last little while in helping learn so much about diamonds and what to look for. This site is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

It’s been a couple of weeks since I originally posted. DH and I will be renewing our wedding vows in honour of our 25th wedding anniversary. I live in Toronto and went to a Wholesale jeweller where I thought I found the ring of my dreams. Thanks to the people here, I realized that invisible setting rings are fragile.

Since then, I have done LOTS of research and looked at LOTS of photos of different rings. I finally narrowed it down to a few and went back to the jeweller. I was sceptical at first because I felt he was trying to get me to purchase a ring that wasn’t practical. I took my girls with me and we had a nice conversation about the cons of the ring etc. We felt that he was honest and I decided to stick with him.
I showed him the different pictures I had for the rings and we talked about each option. DH’s ring was VERY easy LOL He’s getting a nice band with a princess cut diamond in the centre.

After much discussion, I decided on this ring:

We were working with a $4000 budget. Each larger stone will be .30 and there will be 5 stones. The halo will be made up of 1 point stones all around and he calculated there will need to close to 40. I will have the opportunity to examine all the stones before they are set. He is charging me $400 for each centre stone. I looked online and his prices are comparable. He also brought in the guy who will be making the mould of the ring and we had a good conversation about the ring. The designer was so delighted to see the ring I picked. We then started talking about diamond clarity, etc, and they started laughing when I starting talking about “eye clean”. He said you like to read don’t you LOL I told him I want to get the best value for my money

He said if I included another $1000 (my original budget was $5000), he could make the centre stones .35--.37 (depending on the diameter of the stones). I told him I would let him know. So this was a couple of days ago and of course my mind hasn’t stopped racing!!! I was thinking that I would like larger centre stones but I am thinking that I should make the pave stones bigger, say 2 or 3 pointers. I don’t know what the cost difference would be. I may be able to get larger pave stones and slightly larger centre stones.

If that choice is not possible, what would you do? Would the ring look better with larger centre stones or larger pave stones?

The two are very different looks. When the 5 center stones are larger, the overall look is that the halo is purely an enhancer / decorative. When the halo is larger, it could have the adverse effect of making the 5 center stones appear smaller.

Personally, I would not go with larger pave. It will give more of a cluster look instead of a halo look. Have you seen any custom
Pave work from this jeweler?


Edit - btw since you are going custom...I really like the look of the top of the ring but the profile looks like if could be improved upon.

Chrono--Thanks so much for that information. I had NO idea but getting larger pave stones would make the other stones seem smaller That is NOT my goal!!

tyty333 and liaerfvb--Sorry I did forget to metion that the designer indicated that you will only be able to slip a sheet of paper between the centre stones and the pave setting. You will NOT see the gaps. He indicated it will seem like it's a continuous flow. I did have an opportunity to look at other pave settings and I did like the way they were set but then again, I really don't have anything to compare it too.

So I should spend the extra $1000 on the centre stones?

I'm not sure why you are talking about how far apart the pave/ larger stones will be set...its a matter of proportions. Larger pave
with .30 stones might give more of a cluster effect (which is usually not desireable.)

I would go with larger Center stones (I'm more of the mind set the bigger the better) but you do have to take cost into
Consideration.

What is the mm size difference? If negligible, I'd rather save the $1K.

tyty333--Someone mentioned they didn't like the profile of the ring. I interepreted that to mean the gap between the centre stones and the pave stones but in thinking about it I now realize they meant the under part of the ring LOL I really don't know much about this kind of stuff

The jeweller doesn't have the profile pictures for the ring. I will certainly speak to him about different options. I know that I don't want the split shank and he said that was fine.

Chrono--I have NO idea what the difference in mm size between the stones. That is a GREAT question that I will discuss with him. I do agree, if the size difference is very small, it makes more sense to save my $$$$.

Yes, the profile is the gallery area. I think it could be improved on. If I see any good ideas ill post them.

I like the split shank but that's a personal preference.

A few thoughts:

I like the ring, but wonder if this is going to be a stand-alone wedding band or right hand ring, or if you plan to wear this with another ring. If stand-alone, I think it will be a nice blingy presence. If you are hoping to pair it with another ring, I think it will be problematic.

Can you get computer aided design images from this jeweler? And can you then post them here? PSers notice a lot of little details that you might not, which can be a big help if you aren't as savvy or know the lingo. Gypsy, in particular, is excellent at helping people know exactly what to ask for in the correct terminology.

I am a bit concerned about the pave and your inexperience with what it should/could look like. Can you post any images of this jeweler's pave work? I just wouldn't want you to spend $4k on something an not be truly happy. And, what would you prefer the gallery/profile to look like (side view)? You will likely see this angle of the ring a lot more than the top-down view, so you should be happy with what it will look like. More of a trellis style? Some filigree style cutouts?

The difference between .3 and .37 when multiplied by five stones will be quite significant. Personally, I think if you want a very impressive stand alone piece it would be worth $1,000 if you can afford it. I would definitely keep 1 pointers for the halo - any larger will be out of proportion. I wear a 7.5 and I think a ring of this size would just barely fit on my finger. What size are you?

The ring will be worn alone on my left hand and I have my ring size is 9 1/2.

rubybeth--I don't know if I could get computer aided design images from the jeweller but I will certainly ask when I go between Christmas and New Year's I will also take some pictures of the pave work they do and learn how to post photos I do prefer the look of the trellis style.

Rosebloom--More food for thought regarding the stone sizes. Since I have a larger ring size, I don't think going with the bigger stones will be disproportionate. I will have to speak with the jeweller to get his take on my ring size/look of the ring on my finger. My budget is $5000 so the larger stones will be within reach

I agree with the above. I would keep the pave to the smaller size & let the centre stones do the talking if this is to be worn alone.

And I think although this is VERY different from what you were originally looking for, it is a stunning choice. It's beautiful & I can't wait to see how it progresses!
