Upgrade my OMC studs for better clarity stones?

Hi All!

I have a beautiful pair of OMC studs that I purchased from JBEG. I love them and wear them every day but lately I have this nagging feeling that I want to upgrade them. I love the size, cut and color but I can't help but think I want better clarity. Is it crazy to upgrade for better clarity? I'd even be willing to go down in color. I'm too paranoid and lazy to sell on my own so I'd probably have to do consignment, plus I don't want to put out more than 2-3K or so on top of what I get for the sale for the upgrade.

Then I realized, I don't exactly understand how clarity might affect the sparkle, light return etc of a stone if at all. Can someone please advise?

Here is a link to my studs:

Yes, it would be crazy to upgrade for better clarity  Those are lovely.

Buy something NEW instead

ETA: It is unlikely that clarity will change the optics at all, unless the inclusions are very very large and diffuse. Maybe you prefer MRBs?

Looks like we are earring sisters, except mine are in very different settings. ::)

Can you post closer pics of the inclusions, or maybe a link to JbEG's original listing for them?

How noticeable are the inclusions to you? Depends on the kind of inclusions they are, they may not affect the sparkle of the stones. The cut of the OMCs probably affects the performance the most. Maybe you're looking for a more powerhouse type of performing stone? Have you considered OECs? I associate OMCs with big, chunky flashes, lots of color play, and an endearing wonkiness and cuteness. But OECs often outperform OMCs in sparkle. Well... in a way. I mean, I wouldn't trade my OMC earrings for anything

Anyway, that's way too many questions and suggestions, but I thought I'd get a discussion going for what kind of earrings you'd ideally like to have.

Oh, also, I think old cuts may have gone up in price since you bought these. I'm not completely sure, but that's something to take into consideration.

I just went through this I just picked up my studs last night . However where we differ is I upgraded for size and cut. The studs I had were 2.05 I-J and S12 .....but the cut was dull.

a
I upgraded to 2.40 near ideal (the are EGL so we are not so clear exactly if idel) but they are very sparkley.

However I had to put $8,000 into them.

Your studs are gorgous and unless the Sl3 stares at you everytime you look in the mirror then love them and wear them and buy something else.

After it is said and done one of my new studs is probably S12 and the other I1 but eye clean

No one is going to get that close to your ears. IMO, I wouldn't spend the money on clarity for earrings AT ALL unless there were big black inclusions that were clearly visible from 12 inches away.

I would not upgrade those for just clarity. They are beautiful old cut stones with beautiful faceting pattern.

Unless the inclusions were extremely obvious (and it doesn't look like they are) I would not upgrade just for clarity. They are really beautiful and such a great size. I would leave well enough alone!

Ditto. I think that they are gorgeous stones, especially for earrings, where no one gets closer than 6 inches from your ear. I think that they are awesome!

I think what you're wanting is going to cost waaaaaay more than $2-3K.

You mention sparkle and light return. I doubt that is hindered by the inclusions. I'd guess you're used to ideal cut rounds (or just MRBs) and OMCs just aren't as... well, sparkly? I don't know how to describe it.

I have a pair of big low quality earrings. I too often have inklings to upgrade but I know it'll be like $10K to upgrade. For me, that's not worth it. I got my pair of 3.14cttw RB's earring from Pearlmans for something ridiculously low. like $2,000. I'm honestly considering just grabbing a pair of fakes to tide me over when I get the "I want perfect looking stones" feeling.

Thanks so much for the replies. I love old cut diamonds - in fact that's all I own (e-ring, wedding bands, earrings)! These studs are really beautiful and they are fireballs in certain lighting (often lower lighting or spot lighting). This pair of earrings was originally purchased from Neil Lane and then the buyer sold them to JBEG. I bought them from JBEG.

I don't see black inclusions at all when I look in the mirror and I'm wearing them. I wonder if sometimes they don't sparkle as much because I wear them all the time...in the shower, to sleep, to work out...everything. It seems so hard to keep them clean. Harder than my ering for some reason (which is also an OMC). When I clean them they sparkle a lot more

Maybe I'm also comparing them to the look of MRB's because when I see studs on other women that is of course what they are. I never see anyone wearing old cuts as earrings in real life (only on ps!). I'll have to think on it. If I upgrade, it might make sense for me to consider AVC's or AVR's though I would pay through the nose for the same size as these puppies!

No diamonds can sparkle if they aren't clean! The solution seems so very simple - take them off and let them soak for an hour while you shower, and don't wear them to sleep/workout!

MRBs do have a very different type of sparkle - it's much more attention-grabbing IMO. My bigger studs are OECs and I love them, but I acknowledge that given an unlimited budget I'd have chosen MRBs no question. Oh, budgets ::)

I do think precision cut upgrades or stones that are significantly higher clarity are going to cost you well over 2k more.
