Upgrade or just reset?

So it will be 10 years this year and I have $8500 to spend. I was just thinking of having my current stone, a G VVS2 1.34 that we got from GOG reset into the Mark Morrell Fancy Torchiere with a few tweaks. I don't want the diamonds in the head. I'd also need a new wedding band to match so I'm figuring that would be around $5000 - $5200 in the end. Or do I upgrade my stone to a bigger size with lower color and clarity (I have a lifetime upgrade policy on it from GOG and we spent about $10,600 on it)? I'm thinking around 1.6 in an H-I color and eye clean SI clarity. Any ideas on the cost of something like that? GOG doesn't have anything like that listed so I don't know if I'd be able to accomplish that with my budget and still have some money left over to get a new setting (my current setting is a custom Mark Morrell and cannot fit a larger stone). Any thoughts?

personally I wouldnt upgrade. your stone sounds amazing-perfect size, color and clarity. I would re-set it and get a new band.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what I would do either. GOG has this one on it's site. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9229/,, but it doesn't leave room for a new band. Would you be able to replace the head on your current setting to accommodate the larger new stone?

What about keeping your current stone and using it as the center on a really great three stone made my MM? A three stone will give you more finger coverage than upgrading to a 1.6 so it would be a big visual impact!

No, it's a crown head integrated into the band so I can't get a new head. I'm also not really into 3 stones for engagement rings. I'm leaning towards resetting and maybe upgrading my studs with the rest of my budget.

Oh I vote keep the stone and turn it inti a delicious three stone!

ETA sorry that was before i saw your post

I would lean toward resetting too then. I love the MM torchiere. What are you considering for a wedding band?

I think you should keep and reset because your stone is pretty magnificent and you're not going to gain a lot of size with that upgrade to make it worth such a jump in price. Id reset into a really nice MWM and band and get studs if youll wear em.

I have a soft spot for clarity and you have such a fabulous stone already I would just reset it and find new stackers for it so it takes on a different look for you.

MY vote? reset your stone and get a new wedding band - don't upgrade.

1.6 H/I SI over 12K from GOG.

I know it's over 12K but I have $10,500 in trade in value plus an extra $8500 to spend on upgrade/setting.

I think I'm going to just reset it. I'm setting aside $5000 for the setting and wedding band. Which means I have about $3500 left. I think I'm going to upgrade my studs from BGD with that. I have a set of 0.40 K VS2's right now.

Your stone is the perfect size...I'd have the new ring made and consider upgrading the studs. What size are your current ones?

ETA - we posted at the same time. Personally, I would upgrade the studs...probably go up in size and color and down in clarity to SI1s.

Did you read BGDs updgrade policy...they changed it.

Diamonds have gone up so much since yours was bought that it would be a mistake to upgrade. I think resetting and upgrading studs is a good idea!
