Urgent advice on loose sapphire

Hi all!

I need some urgent advice. My wonderful husband agreed to buy a loose sapphire for me as a gift. We recently had a baby boy, so the stone will have some sentimental meaning to us. However, without me knowing, he had already purchased a loose sapphire from the Natural Sapphire Company. Their return policy allows for only 5 days!

I know I would like an emerald cut stone, or possibly radiant cut, but I am now having second thoughts about the stone he picked. I'd love your expert advice on which stone you would pick. Our budget for this is roughly $6-7k.

This is the stone he bought:

I am wondering if this might be a better choice:

What do you think?

Alternatively, what are your thoughts about this radiant-cut sapphire: http://www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com/Sapphires/Blue/B4803/Radiant/stoneid=B4803

Just as a side note, I really like this gorgeous stone from RWWise, but I am sure it's waaaay beyond our budget: http://www.rwwise.com/products/id|625

Thank you in advance!!

Congrats on your baby boy! You may have some more success if you ask the moderators to move your thread to the Colored Stones section of the forum. They are great with sapphires there!!

^Good idea! I will re-post this there in the meantime.

Thanks from a sleep-deprived mom!

Those could potentially be nice, but the stone he chose is fairly small. I would take normal low heat in order to get a larger stone. And yes, the RW sapphire at 4 cts will be many times the cost of the ones at NSC. I do not like a 5 day return policy because it does not give you time to get it independently appraised. And NSC is fairly pricey.

Thanks for your post. I do agree the stone is fairly small, but we are looking for an untreated stone. I know we could get a bigger stone if we went with a heat-treated stone, but we both have inexplicable preference for untreated stones.

Between the 2 emerald cut stones in the links, which would you choose?

Choosing from just those two sapphires, I prefer the one your husband purchased. The other one is too dark for my taste.

Pichu, first of all congrats on your baby boy! Me too, i am the sleepless mom of a baby girl :D
About the sapphires: The one that your husband chose has the best color and proportions compared to the other one you posted ;)

First congrats on your baby boy! I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old so I completley understand being tired all the time.

First off I think you will many posters in CS do not like the Natural Sapphire Company because they edit their photos. Many times what you buy is not what is pictured. If you do a quick search on google or PS you will find many posts confirming that. For that reason alone I would never buy from them. I want ACTUAL photos of any sapphire I purchase.

Personally I would return it and go through another vendor. I'm a big fan of sapphires from Jeff White as I think he has an amazing eye.

Also looking at the one your husband bought I noticed it has no treatment. That is totally fine but if you allow heated sapphires into the mix it will bring down the price so you can go larger. Heating is a treatment that is pretty accepted among the industry. When you get into treatments like BE etc that is when most people draw the line. If you haven't already requested this post to be moved to CS I would go ahead and do that as there are many sapphire experts there who can comment more and give you more options.

I like the one your husband picked the best. It is a lighter color blue and most sapphires are too dark. I purchased a 3.57c unheated royal blue sapphire on ebay several years ago for $1200. Took it to the gemologist and he confirmed there was no heat treatment. They are the rarest and personally i would not buy a heat treated sapphire either.

I know Good Old Gold had a video of lovely sapphires they had called in to find the best stone for their client. I agree that Natural Sapphire store is high. Personally i would send it back and see what Jonathan can find you. He will make a video on 3 stones and you can pick the one you like best. Then you will know the stone you have chosen is not treated. Also some vendors on ebay have sapphires with GIA certs that show no heat treatment. you could check there too.

Hope this helps.
