Vatche U113 or Excel Rep, 4k to spend...

Hello everyone, ive been glancing at the forums for some time now in search of the perfect ring for my soon to be fiancée. I am dead set on the Tiffany Solitaire replica as it is simple, elegant, and beautiful just as she is. Either the Vatche U113 or the one from Excel/superbcert is what I am stuck between. I know people have had great experiences with both but I still have a few questions for those with experience, or those that have seen both in person! Thank you all in advance!

Questions are as follows:

1. Which most closely resembles the Tiffany? I like the smoothness of the original Tiffany band and would prefer one without sharp edges, as I have seen on many reps with the "knife edge". Although the original tiffany does have this "knife edge" cut, it is not sharp by any means.
2. Is 4k feasible for the ring with a decent stone? I am most concerned with clarity and cut over size, I dont need a full carat, but would like something that doesnt appear miniscule either (i know i know, im asking a bit much).

Our story?

We met in Malibu back in 2010 while she was here studying abroad, she is swiss/german. We lived together for a year in California before her going back to Switzerland to finish her graduate work as she was accepted into her "dream" program so to speak. We have been doing long distance, back and forth ever since... I recently took a higher paying job in Nashville (i was in San Diego), just to save money for the move as we have both decided that we would like to call Europe home as this is where her family is, and she has quite a great job lined up there. Ill be moving there at the end of April with a good chunck of change to live off of while I look for jobs in my industry (Information Technology), and would like to purchase the ring before I go, hence the small spending limit!

I know she would much rather me save the extra money to put toward our future together and my new start in Switzerland, than spend a great deal on a diamond that will look unproportionate (she is a 5 1/2).

Shoot for about 3/4 ct.

I would not worry too much about size in Switzerland.

Glad you are happy with Excel, but just mentioning that in the past, other PSers have purchased this same setting from IDJ as well as GOG. Could be worth looking into a few other places which may expand your diamond options and perhaps be competitively priced for the setting.

Good luck!

All of the members here who have recently gone with the Tiffany repro have gone with the Vatche U-113 including myself. I just think it is superior in design and looks to the Excel version. The setting cost me around $1800 last year for a 1.5 ct stone in platinum. Some of us requested 90% platinum, 10% iridium because it is a little harder alloy than the standard 95/5 which means less scratching and turning gray. I bought mine through Good Old Gold and some bought theirs through ID Jewelry. But WhiteFlash also carries Vatche, so you have three good places to buy the diamond and then be able to have it set in that setting.

I'll post a few threads for you of rings with the setting (sorry that a lot of them have ginormous rocks in them, but at least you can see that these people chose the Vatche when they could have had any!):

Okay, on the page below will be pictures of sna77's wife's new Vatche U113 and also her first setting which was the Excel version. They greatly prefer the Vatche, and I think the pictures speak for themselves.

YES!! I knew there was a comparison thread out there!! Awesome research DS!!! :appl: The Vatche would be my personal preference...

I also went with the Vatche, my thread is on one of the ones listed above. I will say the band is thinner than the one at Tiffany which I prefer. I went with ID jewelry who offered me the setting in platinum a little less than that was diamond seeker paid. I didn't see the other setting in my search, but after 6 months I am still happy with it. The knife edge is not "too pointy" :)

Good luck with your search!

of the two, strictly on design alone, I'd get the Vatche. It looks a lot more fluid and finished.

Looks like everyone prefers the Vatche? :-) ...Although nice I am leaning more towards excel, I dont really want one with a skinnier band than the original.

Now to find the diamond.

Did you look at my thread that compared the two? I wouldn't even consider the Excel one!

Yes I did, pretty lengthy thread but alot of good insight! The D.Vatche although a beautiful piece, is just too skinny for my tastes. I have yet to see it in person though, maybe it doesnt look as thin in person?

You know, I asked for my ring to made thinner, if you like the look of the prongs in sure you can ask for it to be made thicker

Yikes, I only meant for you to look at the one page I linked with the pictures of the Vatche and Excel rings!

Since a thinner band usually makes the diamond look larger, I prefer the Vatche over the actual Tiffany ring, which I have tried on and found a little bulky and thick. But I have no doubt that Vatche would make a wider shank if you requested it. That would possibly incur an extra charge, but the head is so much better on the Vatche that I would do that long before I'd go with the other.

You make a great point, ill start searching for a local dealer here in Nashville, ive got to see one in person to really get a feel for what it looks likes and start spec'ing out diamonds.
