The NYC diamond district is, frankly, a pool of sharks. Be careful what you 'learn' there. You'll find the best dealers for what you're doing are not on the ground floor.
Auction houses ARE brokers. It's fundamentally a consignment transaction, and kind of an expensive one at that. The bright side is that auctions come with a date while more standard kinds of consignment are open ended. Sotheby's and Christies, for example, are well regarded companies and their brands adds a bit of cachet to the deal but it comes at a cost. It may be what you're looking for, a lot of people like them, and it depends on what you're looking for.
