So, I have my heart set on a cushion. I had considered going with something else to help with the budget but I would most likely always wonder about a cushion.

On to the setting...here''s where I have a decision to make. I have pretty much decided on the shared prong round setting from Signed Pieces (matching ering and band). But in looking for a way to shave a little off the cost, I''ve thought about going with just one shared prong setting and using plain platinum for the other. I just don''t know which one should be which.

Most pictures I''ve seen are the plain solitaire setting with the eternity band. Unfortunately while I like this look, I''m not too crazy about the plain solitaire. On a side note, my second choice ering setting is cushion center with pear sidestones. I''d like to maximize the size of my *future* stone. Would being in a solitaire type setting make the stone look more substantial or would a setting with sidestones?

Anyway....so my choices are:
1) shared prong round ering setting, plain platinum band (which would be upgraded in the future to a matching band). However, I haven''t seen any pictures of this combination so I''m not sure I''d like it.

2) plain solitare ering setting with eternity band (ering setting would be updated in the future). My thinking on this is that I''ll only wear the ering alone for less than a year before we''re married so I should like the "look" more than just the 2 rings separately.

Am I making any sense??? I waiver back and forth on this every day. I hope to try on these combinations soon so I can just decide. So what would YOU choose if you were me???

~~If I were you, I would get the cushion set in a shared prong setting, and go with a plain band (maybe a matching band for you and & your FI)...I love that look, but I don''t see it very often.

Thanks so much for your reply. I just love that setting so much!!!

I was hoping that putting a thin platinum band (2mm-ish) next to it won''t detract too much from the ering.

I really hope once I''m able to try on the combinations in person, the choice will be clear to me.

I just didn''t know if the shared prong ering would look awkward with a plain band????

~~I don''t think it would look awkward at all, but I wouldn''t get a thick platinum band. Something thin, sleek, and would sit flush with the e-ring... do you know when you might be trying on some beauties???

All we have around here are mall stores unfortunately so I''ve stopped into a few of those (with NO intention of buying there of course) and none of them have cushions in stock or any shared prong settings. There are a couple of smaller family owned stores that we''re going to check out also.

Hopefully next month we''ll make it up Louisville to some of the jewelers there. They should have more what I''m looking for.

I just want to try on the exact combinations so I know for SURE but that doesn''t look like it''s going to happen. The engagement probably won''t happen until later this year so I have time though :)

~~Do you know if there is any way that the mall stores can order a couple for you to compare?? Or, you could make it a vacation and take a weekend trip to NY (or Louisville) maybe, that way you can visit a TON of jewelry stores like Signed Pieces) and get a feel for what looks best on you and fits within your budget. Happy Shopping!!

2 definitely. There''s nothing more bridal, simple, classic, or elegant as a diamond solitaire. This is coming from someone who once owned a solitaire and now misses it very much (though I do love my RB with pear sides and will keep it always, thank you.) Especially during your engagement year, looking down and seeing that sparkler in a classic setting will bring you a lot of joy -- solitaires and brides-to-be just seem to go hand in hand. Plus, if, as you said, you plan to ugprade the setting in the future, well then you''ll be saving some money up front by going with the simplest setting out there. And if you get a diamond wedding band, that is a ring that you''ll keep forever...and how cool that it''ll have all those diamonds in it, for you to enjoy all your life.

For me personally I''ve come to love a simple solitaire look. I wanted to have a shared prong look for the e-ring and wedding band, but now I''m leaning towards the look of a solitaire, so for me I would pick number 2. From what you say it sounds like you have your heart set on choice #1 and I think for you you should go that route. Just out of curiosity where are you located?

Thanks everyone for the replies. It looks like I''m going to have to just try the two looks on. I just can''t decide. If I was just going to pick out the ering it would be shared prong definitely. But I''m trying to keep both rings in mind. This is so hard!!!

Fashionsweetie--I''m in Kentucky.

I can''t BELIEVE I never SAW ttmd''s set. WOW. That''s YUMMSIES. Unexpected yet strong & classic & bold & sparkly & CLEAN. Hmmmmmmm.

I would choose #1. I think the ring BD posted is beautiful (coming from a fellow cushion owner). I think that sidestones maximize the size of a center stone, so I think side pears would make the stone look bigger as well.
