Hi, everyone I finally decided to post because I am having a hard time deciding what to do. I read the book How to Buy a Diamond and have done hours of research on the internet on what are ideal dimensions for the shape (cushion) of diamond I am buying. What I have found is the guidelines are not as straight forward as rounds but some basics still apply.

I thought I found the perfect diamond (my boyfriend was getting ready to buy it tomorrow) on-line but the Girdle had been mislabeled. On the Jewelers Website the Girdle was listed Medium to Slightly Thick. But when I looked up the GIA certificate it was listed at Slightly Thick to Very Thick (something I had missed when viewing the GIA cert previously).

Here are the specifications for the diamond. What does everyone think . . . . . is it really that big of a deal to have a Very Thick Girdle rating on a cushion cut?

I understand that with a thick Girdle you pay more because of the extra carat weight and it could affect the sparkle (I was assured it wouldn’t by the jeweler).

Carat 1.02
Color F
Clarity VS1
Price $4,914
Measurements 6.04 x 5.8 x 3.94
Depth 67.9 %
Table 62 %
Cutlet None
Girdle Slight Thick to Very Thick
Polish - Excellence
Symmetry – Good
Fluoresce – None

Thanks for any advice

No straight rules....

David Atlas wrote it nicely here:

Yes sorry I should know better, you can’t judge a cushion by numbers alone. Can you view this?

Hi Meliisa,

Of course, I will take a look for you.

Actually I think it is a good looking cushion. Ask Judah or Barry - whoever you are dealing with - to check out the girdle, it could be the very thick part is not an issue and only affects a small portion of the girdle. They will be able to tell you for sure. Is this the type of cushion you were looking for? Make sure it is eyeclean to your standards also again by asking the vendors.

Eye clean? I think it looks good? But i am not an expert. Its a color F and VS1.
