Vick Gets 23 Months for Dogfighting

I think the outrage is sometimes in proporton to the "celebrity" of the perpetrator. OJ Simpson had the entire nation glued to their televisions, watching that mockery of a trial. We expect certain people in our society to be role models and, when they are not, our adulation can quickly turn to outrage. I won't go into the many horrendous things in this world that break my heart, but I certainly feel them. Vick knowingly involved himself in disgraceful behavior and is paying the price. I wish it would be the same for others who commit outrageous acts of violence.

The sentence is constistent with sentences handed down for similar offenses. There is no parole in the federal system, so he''ll serve a minimum of ~20 months. He''s likely going into a special facility simply because he''s a celebrity prisoner, and such can cause special security problems.

I predict that when he gets out, he''ll do the celebrity apology circuit (Oprah, Larry King, etc.), do some volunteer work for the Humane Society, and get the suspension lifted. He''ll play again--quarterbacks with his talent are too rare in the NFL, and the position is too important to a team''s success. Some team in dire need of a QB will sign him, and if he can win, he''ll be around another five years.

Americans in general are a forgiving people, and we''re big on second chances. Unless he does something stupid to blow it again, he''ll be back.

Even though I really hate the things he did. I feel like there are people who do much worse and there are more serious issues in the US. I won''t make any excuses for him, because right is right and wrong is wrong, but I also don''t think it''s right to say he shouldn''t be able to play in the NFL again.
