Was there something you ever really regretted not buying?

Ahhhhhh yes. That's the elusive sucker.

Can't you just have this made up for you? Litnon has some onyx, I bet they have more. They can send it to Dana at mastercut who can cut the onyx to your specs, to fit a diamond that you have. Then you can probably get Michael E or Daniel M to put it all together for you.

I think it can be done.

I passed up the Leon 3-stone ring.
But it meant I was able to buy a plat Van Craeynest ring with a .7ct, G, AGS0 lazare diamond. So in hindsight, I'm happy with the decision.

I still haz a sad about the 2.5 tcw diamond crescent brooch that I passed up when I was shopping for my earrings: it wound up going for $600 or so if I remember correctly, and I'm not sure if I'll ever see another for that price! I'm also VERY sad still about the Michael B. Lace band I saw with a BIN price of 1K: by the time I went to bid, the seller had taken it down. Le sigh ....

Nothing for now.

Re: Was there something you ever really regretted not buying

Well, I am new to this business so I can not, really, regret not buying a Paraiba but here are some things...

An $ 15 K stunning unheated Burmese ruby from Marc Sarosi's website. Thought it was too expensive, idiotic of me! It was a while ago...

(Don't laugh) - tons of Tan's spinels in January when they were so cheap.

More of James Meyer's jewelry before he stopped taking orders

A different alexandrite instead of one I chose (or the one I saw the day after I bought my stone)

A small unheated sapphire that I saw on Jeff White's website after I had a custom-cut one from him. I thought that two would be too much!

A certain demantoid on Litnon

A very nice Namibian on Gemfix website

But nothing that I would eat my heart out over...

Re: Was there something you ever really regretted not buying

Have 3 regrets after more than 36 years in the business.

I contract cut an Aquamarine for a client in 1978 that finished out at 22.15 ct, in a Backgammon cut, it was truly the most beatiful color a vivid blue with some green tones in about 65% saturation. I was so tempted to tell the client I couldn't sell it, but in this game your word and trust is everything.

A few years later I was doing a liquidation from a big auction house in my store, and was seriously looking at a 4.65 ct Vivid Pink Diamond in a marquise cut (Natural Color) I usually don't care much for Diamonds, too icy for me, but this one was a head turner from across the room, it went for 16K, way under valued even then. Now I could buy my own island with it ;(

I had the chance to buy a 4.02 ct Fancy Vivid Canary,IF, oval cut diamond from a desparate seller for $6500, but my wife wanted to buy a new horse trailer, 2 years after getting the horse trailer, my neighbor backed over it with his tractor backhoe. ;(

Needless to say I don't listen to my wife anymore about buying gemstones :D

Re: Was there something you ever really regretted not buying

I don't remember ever regretting not buying something.
I never buy things on the spur of the moment--I always wait and think about it (and make sure there's a return policy, because I feel like I'm much more likely to regret buying). If the thing gets sold while I am waiting, I figure it was not meant for me. I figure that I will get everything that was meant for me.
the things I feel regretful about tend to things that were lost from the family (usually not by me). But I did give away a beautiful silver bangle once. It was purer than sterling silver, about 980 and my grandmother gave it to me. It was one of a pair. I lent it to some boy I had a crush on for one night and he pretended he lost it. I immediately didn't have a crush on him anymore--but I didn't have my bracelet either.
We thought they would always make bracelets like that in my country but haven't for a long time. The bracelets now are sterling silver which feels harder and stiffer, tarnishes and always seems to me to be meant for forks and knives, not jewelry. I regret not having having that bracelet--but I'm glad I have the one I do have.
Oh--sometimes I regret that I didn't buy two 22k gold Indian bangles back when gold was $550 an ounce. But I didn't have the cash. I could still buy a matching bracelet but it would now cost about $1200 rather than $500 so I probably won't. But again, I'm happy to have the one I have, which is very thick. There were lots of things a few years that I wanted in 22K gold--a waist chain, a watch band--they were affordable then but are not anymore. However, I believe I got what I was meant to get--and would rather have savings and a retirement fund than the things I have had a whim for in terms of jewelry.
