Well, I thought I was out of the woods after buying a ring and hearing she liked it. Now I need a band. The engagement ring I bought has a matching band, and she likes it, so I bought that for her today.

Here is what Abazias (the vendor) sent me of the 2 rings together:

Her engagement ring is similar, but has a larger radiant cut diamond.

The problem is what to buy for me. I am used to the idea of husband and wife wearing matching rings, but I am not wearing that band. So I either get a man's ring with diamonds (which I think are all ugly, too expensive, and don't match) or a plain gold band, or a design somewhat similar to her ring. At first I was thinking I'd do a standard round, but I think the flat rings match hers better. I am not sure if I want a 3mm ring (same width as her band) a 6mm ring (same width as her band + her engagement ring) or different width. I've looked at beveled/groved rings thinking they might match the channel in her ring, but to me they remind of 2 rings, and I don't want to look like I was wearing an engagement ring too. I like the idea of a larger ring (more bling to match hers, more masculine than a 3mm ring) but I have small hands for a man my size (6' tall, probably a size 8 ring). The whole concept of it matching hers is only important to me - I don't think she cares what ring I get. Also, it is very important to me that I wear the same ring from my wedding day until I die (no trade ups, exchanges for something different later).

Also, I really liked Abazias for diamonds, and feel I got a fair price on her band, but I think they are expensive for plain gold rings. I am tempted to buy my ring from http://www.iweddingband.com.. Do you think I am getting a better ring (either more metal or better workmanship) at Abazias, or do you think the difference is pure profit?

My husband felt the same way you do about wearing the same band from our wedding day until the day he died. Well, life happened and he needed to resize his ring after about 10 years. Unfortunately, we had purchased beautifully carved rings that were very wide with a complicated pattern. There was no way to resize. We ended up getting him a simple thin (4mm) gold band and it has worked out well for him.

If wearing the same band forever is very important to you, then make sure you choose something that can be resized. Or, consider that at a later anniversary, both you and your wife might like to recommit and share the pleasure of choosing new rings that represent your life at that time.

I think it's a sweet idea to wear matching bands, but I personally don't know any couples who have gone that route. It will likely be a bit of a challenge to find something that you both like that also matches her ring. Have you considered the idea of engraving something - initials or a phrase - on the inside of your bands? That way the bands are "matching" in a way, but without needing them to look identical. Just a thought!

Have you taken a look at the men's eye-candy thread (I think that's where the picture that VR shared was posted)?

To help you decide on widths and styles, I'd suggest buying some cheapy-cheap rings (either online or from discount stores) of different widths, thicknesses, styles and see what you can live with for a few days.

I kind of think that wearing matching bands is a little old fashioned! Surely two committed people in love can have different tastes in jewelry. If you're into a plain band, get a plain band -- it shouldn't have to correspond to your wife's rings in width or style at all. Wear what is comfortable for your taste and lifestyle! Good luck!

I think a classic plain band is the way to go! I think it is hard to have matching bands considering a man and a woman generally like different styles! I wanted diamonds on my wedding band and my husband definitely did not!

I really like the classic milgrain band:

and the classic plain band with softened edges:
