We''ve decided to elope next month! I need a dress and I have NO idea where to begin. I want something casual and only knee length or so (rather than a traditional full length gown). I assumed I''d just go to a department store and get a white cocktail dress or something, but I haven''t had any luck. White is apparently not popular at this time of year.

Does anyone have any ideas? Getting desperate here. Would a bridal store have something so informal? Please help! Any ideas welcome. Thanks!

You can certainly try a bridal store but you will have to purchase a sample, which only works if you are a sample size. This is a hard time of year to find truly informal white dresses, so I''d branch out as much as you can ASAP.

J.Crew has some beautiful dresses that you could get in time too.

I would look through the online catalogs of the larger department stores. What about something like this:

I LOVE this betsey johnson...but it may be a bit too "summery" for a wedding in december...

I like this one too...

Also take a look on Bluefly.com - you can search by colour, and they have some very pretty things in white and ivory.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I had considered J Crew and may wind up ordering one and just seeing how it looks in person. This is the one I was considering (thought the cap sleeves were cute): http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WeddingParties/womens/w_bridesmaids/PRDOVR~96061/96061.jsp

I''ve been to the actual store and online for Macy''s, Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales. I couldn''t believe that I couldn''t find something at any of them. I may have to hit a bridal store tomorrow and hope for good luck.

As for cut, I''m not really sure. I tend to like empire waist like this one but I''m open: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2971650/0~2376776~2374327~2374331~6014155?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6014155&P=1
White, cream, even light light pink will work for me. I don''t tend to look good in the ones with a band around the mid-section, like this one: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2999490/0~2376776~2374327~2374331~6014146?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6014146&P=1

I just want something that''s sort of casual and pretty and actually looks good on (the third always being the toughest and why I wish there were more in the stores to try!). Thanks for the ideas!

This is pretty if you''re looking for an empire waist. http://www.bluefly.com/Cynthia-Steffe-cream-cotton-pointelle-origami-inset-dress/cat60019/211751500/detail.fly

Oooh, I like this one pjean!

(Yeah, I think that second one may be too short...)

I need to look around bluefly.com some more -- great suggestion that I hadn''t thought of!

I also like this one -- if only it was in my size (6/8)...and maybe a wee bit lighter in color http://www.bluefly.com/Nanette-Lepore-ivory-sequined-silk-Dancing-Machine-dress/cat60019/300303903/detail.fly

What about this one from David''s Bridal online collection? They have other knee length dresses also.

...and I LOVE this one from Nordstrom.

Lovinsparkles, I haven't ordered anything from this site, but there seems to be quite a few white dresses to choose from. They even have a destination wedding section. If you see something you like, but aren't comfortable ordering from them then maybe we can help you hunt it down somewhere else or help find something similar.

I second the David''s Bridal idea....they have some tea length dresses in the store, that way you can try it on in your size!

This one is cute: http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridal_gowns_detail.jsp?stid=2345&prodgroup=123

This one is a little bit more simple, but still elegant: http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridal_gowns_detail.jsp?stid=2996&prodgroup=123

Thanks so much you guys! I found a couple of dresses today at dept stores, but when I brought them home, my fiance thought they weren''t wedding-y enough, so so much for my white cocktail dress idea! Thanks to your suggestions I am hopefully visiting David''s Bridal tomorrow (I love those knee length ones!) and possibly House of Brides. Hopefully that will give me a better idea of the options. I''m really not that picky -- so long as it''s pretty and flattering on me, I think I''ll be fine!

Thanks again!

I suggest looking at bridesmaids dresses. Particularly because, like neatfreak says, it will be hard to find white colors this time of year. The turn around for bridesmaids dresses is faster, and it will give you a lot more semiformal but still knee length options. I love this Jenny Yoo. She has several others. You might also want to check out Thread or Simple Silhouettes.

Thanks again!

Just saw this post. Just wanted to suggest, again, to check bridesmaids dresses!

That''s a great site, Redrose -- lots of nice things. I have to say I''m a little (lot) nervous about buying such a big purchase without trying it on in person first, but if the bridal salons I visit don''t have what I need and I get a better feel for styles that look good on me there, I might give it a try...it''s awesome that they''re already made though and that would fit in our timeframe (assuming limited alterations necessary)...Hmm.... Thanks for the idea!!

Hi guys, just wanted to update you and say thanks so much for the David''s Bridal recommendation. As it happened, one opened near me yesterday so I went in on their opening day and was there for nearly 3 hours trying stuff on.

I was tempted by the tea-length dresses, but I don''t know, I started to like the long, full bridal dresses too (my fiance likes the more wedding-y look too). So, here''s my question, is it crazy to buy a full length, very wedding-y gown if you''re eloping? We''re having a private ceremony (just the two of us) at a B&B, but we are having a photographer and kind of like the idea of having wedding-y pictures (to show everyone who wasn''t there with us). I was sort of inspired by Wishful Thinking''s beautiful photo thread -- that it can be fun to fully embrace the tradition even if you''re not having a full wedding. So what do you think about this? Full bridal gown or something simpler?

There is also the timing issue and not really having the time to keep searching for something with the perfect understated yet wedding-y look, so that makes me sort of just want to go for it too, if I find one that fits, is available, and looks pretty!

I can''t find a link to the dress I am most considering so here''s a (not great) picture of me in it, with the caveat that I am not wearing the poofy slip here, and when I do, the bottom half poofs out much more than it is here. Do you think this dress looks good, is appropriate, and fits properly? Is the veil the right length? I am completely out of my element here and am looking for suggestions before I pull the trigger on something tomorrow morning. (Another veil question: do I need more than one or those clips/headbands they try to sell you with it?)

Also, these were two others I tried, both were in ivory, not white unfortunately, and both would need alterations, but they are an option too.

Thoughts? Thanks!!

Oh, and the pink is a pink sash that they added around the dress cause I had complained that I didn''t like that there wasn''t anything breaking up the middle. The sash comes in lots of different colors, but I like the pale/subltle look here, it flows down in the back, following the dress. A slightly fun touch, I thought, but please let me know if it looks bad.

I think you can wear whatever you want, full length or not! But a full-length dress might be better in December. I think the dresses you picked out are all gorgeous and especially appropriate for a wedding like yours, since they''re all sleek and simple. I think the Galina (last link) is my favorite of the three, but I''d have to see pics of course.

Hi LS,

My hubby and I eloped (just the two of us also, no guests), and I wore a traditional full length wedding dress and loved it! I say go for it! It's the only time in your life you get to wear one, and it's so fun! I really like the Galina too!

As far as the veil goes, I'm not sure what clips they are selling there, but I think their veils are dramatically over-priced. I'd recommend doing a quick search tonight for a similar veil to the one you like on-line and checking the price difference. I will post a site that others have used on here before. Of course, I know you have the timing issue, but provided you could have one sent to you in 7 days . . . it's just something worth looking into, I think!

ETA:
Other PSer's have worn veils from here: http://www.occanseydesigns.com/

If you search the site name on here, you can read about their experiences.

Do you have pics of you in the Galina?

Oh, and one more suggestion, you might have a bridal consignment shop in your area -- this is another great way to find dresses off the rack in your size, and the selection can be truly unbelievable!

ETAA:
Oh, and if you want one of the other two dresses (that they had in ivory only), can't they just pull one in white from another store??? If they can't, I'd call around to the other David's in your area to see if they have the dress in stock in white. If you want to wear a white dress, then you shall wear white!

I totally agree - I got my dress at David''s, and even though it had to be "ordered," it took less than a week to come in. It was probably sitting somewhere in a warehouse just waiting for me. Definitely check it out.

Thanks LV and Jstarfireb!

I don't have a picture of the Galina on, but I have a picture of the other one I linked to (option #3), and I think they fit pretty similarly. This one is too tight (I need the next size up, which they would have to order -- I tried two sizes up and it fit great in the middle, but too big on top -- they said they could take this one out 2 inches too and thought that would be enough...they also said they could take in the 2-sizes-up one on the top, but I'm not confident that it would look right). I like it a lot, I'm just self-conscious about it being too tight in the middle. The Galina fits a lot like this, not quite as tight, but the horiztonal stripes I thought were not the most flattering on me. But I did like it aside from that. Both are very pretty from the side and from the back.

I did try one consignment shop and you're right, that is an option. There's another one I could try. But with the holiday, time is running out, especially if I need alterations, so if I can choose one at David's Bridal tomorrow, that might be the best plan.

If anyone has thoughts on either of the dresses, or the veil length, please chime in! I want to make sure I'm considering everything before tomorrow's appt (fiance will come with and help me decide too). Thanks!!!
