I think a weekday wedding is fine for a DW. All our guests are travelling for our wedding (besides my parents who are retired and live there) so we chose a Thursday wedding as it was quieter for all the vendors and the resorts. No need to pick a busy weekend night when everyone is on holidays. Accommodation and flight are also cheaper weekdays.

is it ok to expect guests to take maybe 1/2 day off of work in order to be at the wedding venue?

For us, unless you were a BFF for life or close family, we wouldn''t take a vacation day. We''d try to leave work early, do our best, maybe skip the actual ceremony, but no vacation time. Vacation is the dearest resource we have!

Also, keep in mind you might have some people who don''t have any vacation left--maybe from getting married themselves, having a baby, or starting a new job.

We REALLY REALLY REALLY want to be married in September 2010 and that is still big wedding time in So Cal. Friday/Sunday minimums are lower than Saturday... but not by much. And Labor day weekend is completely ruled out.

So far I found ONE venue that could do Friday night (not Saturday) in our price range and still am waiting to hear from several others so fingers crossed.

WHere in SoCal are you planning on having your wedding?

We are looking for ocean view in LA county... not necessarily ON the beach... but someplace with good H20 scenery. Malibu/ palos verdes... something like that. Santa monica seems sort of too busy and hectic. I think there are more places with views in OC... but since DW for our families... we want them to see and experience LA since it is the place we love and live. We went to santa barbara to see if that felt right... and soon off to San diego... but I think we really want location close to home for us in LA. The places we like have 15k or 20k food minimums on fri/sat! That is A LOT of food for small wedding of 40-50 people... thus the weekday minimums are cut in half.

Green With Envy - Have you considered any private vacation rentals to use as your "venue"? This could cut costs, solve your weekday/weekend dilemma, and provide lodging for your OOT family members. This is what I'm doing in Florida. VRBO.com is an awesome site for vacation rentals. Of course you would need to make sure each venue allows weddings.

Here are a few estates I found in Malibu/Palos Verdes:
