Well hello everyone, I''m back from vacation! I missed my PS!
9.gif

We had a wonderful week of fun and sun up in the north woods of Wisconsin....we rented a lake house which came with a pontoon boat, canoe, and kayak. We had a few friends join us with their dogs the first weekend, and one couple brought their speedboat which was nice to have. With all the boating, hiking up and down the stairs back and forth from the house to the dock, and general camping activities, I was able to stay pretty active and although I didn''t technically "work out" I got plenty of exercise. I also managed to eat well, although I did do my fair share of imbibing, if ya know what I mean. We found some wonderful cranberry wines from a local winery...there are quite a few cranberry bogs up there so we were able to take advantage of that.

I brought along my veggie dogs and veggie burgers so I didn''t feel too left out of the campfire roasting and grilling, lol. I did have a few s''mores, so I didn''t totally stay on the wagon!

It''s really hot here in Chicago now...I feel a little pooped after the vacation, and I really am having a hard time motivating myself to work out! My gym called while I was gone to say my July dues hadn''t gone through--my credit card had expired! I was like what? The dues come straight from my bank account (automatic debit setup type thing). I didn''t realize that when my debit card expired in June that my electronic funds transfers might be affected. Jeez. I suppose I will HAVE to get in there now and fix that issue, ha ha!

Hope everyone is having a good Monday and that we can all help each other stay on track this week! Have a great day!

hi monarch! i was thinking about starting this thread then got distracted...hehee.

last week was kind of a wash in terms of eating, but i worked out like a fiend, wed, thurs and then saturday for kickboxing, and then walks in between and all around kind of thing. i am finally getting greg to walk with me at night, even though he grouses when i have to get him out of the house, once we are out he is all gung ho and even on saturday night he just wanted to walk our 1m course but he got all inspired and we ended up going out further into the neighborhoods and walked about 2miles in the end...yay! it was very hot on sat too so it was nice to be out in the cool evening air.

i also have been doing my jumping jack and weight breakouts on days when i''m not really working out. i am trying to rest my arm muscles in between classes because i don''t want to get too psycho and have that same arm problem as last time that took forever to heal. but the jumping jacks, woo...talk about challenging but yet fun. i read in a mag that one of the celebs when she can''t sleep, does 30 minutes of jumping jacks (intervals im sure!!) and i thought well see....i guess i''m doing something right. hehee.

in terms of body and all that, i was kind of discouraged a week and a half ago when i went to visit my parents and tried their scale and found out that it said i was 1 pound heavier than i was in Texas in MAY when i last weighed myself. i was like WHAT. esp since i know i look visually better. my mom said oh well muscle weighs more than fat but i was totally sad about that for a little while. see that is why i hate the scale! it''s so much easier to go off of clothes fitting or the measuring tape. so either the weight i had is just redistributing itself OR i am gaining more muscle. i can SEE changes in my body for sure (as can greg) so i know something is going right, but that scale, it''s soooooo evil.
15.gif

anyway i have been trying to continuously add a little bit more fiber into my diet which seems to be working, i am also not counting calories as religiously as before because i tend to ''know'' what i am eating in terms of calorie counts. because i am working out more also i am not watching that as closely because i don''t want to under-eat and then have my body freak out and try to hold onto fat.

i have 3 weeks til we go to palm springs for our trip and i am hoping that i can keep on the path i have been on and slowly tighten up a little more...the one problem area is still my belly...ARGH. i get so bloated if i eat some carbs or anything, it looks like i am 3 months preggo by the end of the night. hate it! but maybe it''s just genetic as my mom has it too. eeeee!

anyhow, hang in there ladies....this is a new week!! i''m working out tonite at kbox, had heart kash oatmeal for breakfast and coffee and we are supposed to go to lunch with our sales team so hopefully we can go somewhere that has basic salads. dinner is coconut crusted tilapia and whole foods salad! we had yummy steak and lemon roasted potatoes last nite and crab bisque, oopsie.

Welcome back, monarch! Glad you had a great trip and managed to eat well while you were gone! It''s so tough on vacation. I tend to eat two meals a day instead of three when we go on trips so that I don''t feel so guilty about eating out so much! But it''s hard to do anything else when you''re living in a hotel room.

Mara, don''t let the scale get you down. I know it can be discouraging, but if you (and Greg) are seeing changes that means you are doing well!

This weekend we painted our offices in our new house. I decided I wanted stripes on my walls...the room is fairly large (something like 17 by 15) and the ceilings are 10 feet tall, so I spent A LOT of time climbing up and down a ladder to tape and cut in...I called that my exercise for the weekend because I am feeling pain in my legs like I can''t believe! I guess I worked muscles I haven''t used in a while and I am feeling it!

As for eating, well not so good. By the end of each day neither one of us had the energy to cook so we ate out. Nothing too horrible, but not as healthy as I usually am. Between school and and moving and wedding there hasn''t been a lot of time for grocery stores and home cooked meals, I''m really looking forward to getting settled into the new house (only four more weeks before I move!) and eating in more often. We''re so scattered between houses right now that neither place feels like home.

I was reading recently that to lose weight, a 150 pound woman (it was the lowest number on the scale) could only eat a bit more than 1000 calories. That''s not much at all!

How many calories a day do you eat?

That is totally not true TG!
6.gif
In fact most reputable online sites will tell you to NOT drop your calorie intake below 1200 a day because it's not healthy for you.

How many calories to eat depends on your weight, height and also how active you are...if you are burning 500 calories a day with activities, there's no way that eating 1k a day leaves you with enough calories for energy. Most people have sedentary burning rates that are more ilke 1500-2000, aka just by sitting around that is what your body burns with basic functions.

For example for me, I'm about 5'8" and 150 lbs and according to the online calcs, my body basal metabolic rate (what my body burns while just resting and doing normal functions) is around 2000 calories a day. Some sites said a little more and some said a little less so I took an average. Add in exercise per day which is maybe like 300-500 calories depending on what I do...and I could end up burning 2300-2500 calories day. If I am only taking in 1k calories a day, then I will lose a pound every 2 days, YIKES...that's not very healthy!!

Most places tell you that you don't want to be losing more than a pound a week and maybe even not that much depending on what you need to lose. I am aiming for a pound every 2 weeks or so. Anyway...that does not sound right at all unless you are a 85 lb 5 foot woman or something!

How many calories a day do you eat?

well, you can eat more than that as long as you burn it all off with exercise.
I think the quallity of the food you are eating is much more important than the caloric intake. I don''t keep up with calories-- I just try to eat healthily (especially during the week) and exercise. (but then again I do not want to lose weight per say--just tone everything).

Speaking of exercise-- do you suppose strenuous shopping counts as exercise. My friends and I shopped for home deco this weekend for 11 hours one day and 6 the next, which left no time for real exercise. I think I am counting it as fitness walking lol.

That''s what I thought too! But maybe this was because it was to lose weight without exercise, which I am doing....

I did my sedentary rate thing on a site that seemed pretty scientific and accurate. It was nowhere near 1500 though...probably more like 1100. I believe it a negative of 3500 calories to burn a pound...

I''ll have to look online for a good site to recalculate everything again...I''m interested to see what I am REALLY putting in and putting out!

Does anyone have a link to one of those online calculators mara was talking about?

Hi everyone!! I have been a bad girl and I am trying to change my evil ways.
11.gif
Last week I found this yummy summertime dip made with asiago and artichoke and enjoyed it with sesame seed breaksticks until I looked at the label and realized how much FAT I was consuming with my little snack! Gosh, I really have to take notice of these minor details before I buy something!!

Glad to hear you had a good vacation Monarch! I am trying to get back on track this week and keep my eating healthier and in smaller portions and walking more often. For me the scale is a good thing as I smarten up fast if I see the numbers rising too much, but for you Mara that scale was not a good thing. You are building muscle and seeing your body changing in a positive way, so that is what matters!!!

Hey all, Ive been really bold and have eaten so badly over the weekend and I havent worked out at all. We went away for our anniversary trip and we ate like pigs! Its our anniversary today so we are having thai takeaway which should be arriving soon. Will have to get back to the gym tomorrow

I did my basal M.R. again, and it came out to 1400 calories. I think I did it last time when I was thinner, so it came out to be about 1300 cal. I always thought I needed about 2000 calories a day just to survive, so it was a surprise to me when it came out quite a bit less!

A great calorie counter site is http://www.calorielab.com/. You can do a search for different food items and find out exactly what you are putting into your body.

Just for kicks, I am doing a calorie count today. I feel constantly hungry, but am feeding myself about every 1.5 to 2 hours. Here's what I have so far...

Meal Item eaten Calories
Breakfast 2 egg whites 34
grape tomatoes 45
snack 2 celery with laughing cow 62
mid morning soybeans 1 cup 298
snack 2 lychee 12
late lunch tuna salad lettuce wraps 277

Can you believe that is already 728 calories????

Thanks for the calculators!
My BMR is 1392.8 So apparently I can burn all that off just by sleeping all day long---very interesting!

I worry about cutting too many calories simply because NOT eating messes up your metabolism and makes it harder to lose weight. Your body goes, "Oh dear, I am starving. I'd better start conserving energy." and it holds food hostage unless you completly starve it off, which will mess up your heart. Plus when you eat again, your metabolism is so slow, everything just sticks too you (I think I am starting to understand where the newlywed nine comes from!)

A dear friend of mine recently competed in Miss Georgia, and her figure was AMAZING. I almost died. She says lots of protine+exercise= a killer figure. (Cut out sugars and fats and bad carbs--all my favorite things!) She also says that eating a serving of cottage cheese at night keeps your metabolism working at night. (If only I could stomache it!)

So I guess it will be lots of tilapia and shrimp and chicken for me and lots of cardio pilates.

i typically eat about 700-800 calories by late afternoon...then if it's a good day i try to keep dinner at about 500 calories (aka fish and veggies like tonite). but some days, woo hoo. party. heehe. i try to stay under 1500-1600 per day during the week, during the weekend it's more like 2k because we eat out so much more. then i am trying to burn about at least 300 calories a day between walking and kickboxing.

eta: that calc i did from the link said mine is 1475 but another one i found on another site said something like 2000! also, if you use fitday.com, that one had me at like 2100 based on the info i entered. so it's so hard to know which one is reliable. that is a huge difference in calories!

I just joined fitday.com, which has my BMR at 1597. I think that I''ll actually use it to track what I''m eating for at least a few days. I''ve never done that before, so it should be interesting.

I had a friend staying with us this weekend, so there was a little more imbibing than usual. J and I really kept up with the exercise though. On Saturday, we went on a walk and got lost decided to explore new areas of town for a bit over two hours. On Sunday, we walked to church and back and then later took Dylan for a walk. We''re about to head out on our MWF walk -- we start on a loop together, and then at the half point J starts to run and I walk the rest of it back. I think it''s about 2.5 miles total. Ok, he''s getting on me to leave, so perhaps more later.

oh okay actually i was retarded. this is what fitday has for me:

Basal: 1480 61%
Lifestyle: 962 39%

which means that basal is if i sleep all day, but lifestyle meaning that i am not sedentary at my desk the whole time. but i think i need to modify it actually. 960 seems like a lot for a lifestyle burn. that does not include my exercise which fitday then adds to that and changes the pie chart.

ETA..i just changed it to 'seated work' and it has 1480 and 666 now for a total of 2146. so i guess we do burn calories just by walking around, getting into the car, etc. so is the 2146 then what i should be using. this is what gets confusing.

That makes sense Mara...I work out of a home office and don''t have to do much walking around, so I will use my basic rate as a guideline.

The nice part is that since I don''t go out for lunch, I can do some workout DVDs instead. I''m off to do some aerobics!

I just joined fitday now too! I think it will be very useful!

Okay, I''m back from my third walk of the day. The first was about half an hour with the puppy, the second was about 75 minutes hard, and this one was a moderate/easy pace with J. Whew.

And I forgot to say something earlier that I''m really excited about. I think that my waist, hips and butt are a little bit smaller. It''s hard to tell, since my summer clothing is pretty forgiving -- a lot of skirts that can sit lower or higher on the waist, depending on how large my waist is, and then shorts and stuff to workout. But my abs are definitely more toned. My back exercises really focus on core strength (like doing bridges, things like that) and I think it''s helping. Funny thing, though - like Mara, I''ve gained a little bit of weight (about 3 lbs, I think).

TravelingGal - do you have any workout DVD recommendations, for future reference?

Blenheim, I''ll let you know. I just got the cheap ones at Costco, and honestly, they suck. I''m doing a dance one because I just used to bop around the house (jumping jacks and what not) and that seemed to really give me a workout. But this dance one is just too easy. I have a pilates one I am doing next so I will let you know.

So far, I haven''t found anything too great.
14.gif

Go Blen!! I have been trying to do 2 walks a day on the days I don''t work out...and at least one a day on the days I do...so far so good. I definitely noticed a difference in my lower half as you are noting, aka hips, butt, legs etc.

Oh and I LOVE jumping jacks at home...I did about 20 minutes yesterday with intervals and lifting light weights and it does give you a workout for home days for sure.

Walking is definitely underrated. It''s the only thing I can get my FI to do right now, and when he goes with me it is such a workout! It helps he''s 6 feet tall and my little asian legs have to keep up with him. We do hills too...I get more winded with those than I do when I run.

I am hoping to jump start my body. I''ve run two marathons, and it''s just such a bummer you don''t lose any weight training those things. You''re just so hungry all the time!!!

Thanks for the fitday tip, I love the site! I was doing the same thing using calorie lab, but this is MUCH better....

I know exactly what you mean. Until lately, I''ve always kind of discounted walking as something that more mature women do for exercise. But I think that it''s working better than running, as far as losing weight is concerned! And I still feel really fit. I''ve spent the last seven years running track/XC, and no matter how much I run I feel like I''m always the same weight. I just get sooo hungry.

I''ve been thinking of picking up a pilates video at some point, so let me know what you think! I''m not supposed to do anything high-impact for another three months or so, but I''m allowed to ease into lower-impact exercise as long as it doesn''t cause me back pain. I know I wouldn''t be able to do everything, not for a while, but I''m hoping that I can find some extra things to add to my routine.

Interesting article on snack bars vs protein bars vs workout bars etc:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13738079/?GT1=8307

The ones I eat are the Kashi hard granola bars which are 130 calories and something like 4g of fiber and 6g of protein in each serving. And they fill me up for a few hours...and are really yummy and crunchy. So I guess based on the article it seems like they are the right type for me.

I''ve never looked at the workout threads on PS until today, but they are very interesting! I just joined FitDay also. Here''s a brief summary of my fitness story. Up until January of this year, I had weighed around 125-130 and I am 5 feet 5 inches. I never watched what I ate, so I ate anything I wanted (I even ate a whole half gallon of ice cream and a whole cheesecake by myself on two occassions). I also never exercised, I had the motto "no pain no pain." But early this January, I decided to get healthy and get fit. I got one of those scales that tells you the body fat percentage and everything. I weighed in at 128 and 22% body fat. I started a swimming routine of half an hour a day and 200 crunches in the evening along with weights while watching TV. I also got on a diet where every day basically consisted of cereal for breakfast, yogurt/fruit for lunch, and chicken salad for dinner. Or something along those lines. I am now 107 pounds with 14% body fat. I am happy with the results, but that''s because I''ve been super disciplined. I live by myself now, so I prepare all my meals and eat at home most of the time. But whenever I go out it''s hard to control the diet. This fall I''m going to be moving in with my fiance and one of our favorite pasttimes is cooking and eating. I read a lot about keeping to a balanced diet, but I still feel like if I eat a hamburger one night instead of my usual salad, I''m going to wake up 2 pounds heavier. So I guess my concern is how to maintain the weight?

hey everyone,

I''ve been pretty quiet the past 2 weeks or so...I''ve been working out a little, but nothing spectacular.

Today I decided to sign up for another 5K, because I was getting really lazy about running & I was missing the leg shaping benefits!

I headed to the gym & started my usual three miles. After 1.5 miles, I started to feel really dizzy, naseous & overall sick. I immediately got off the treadmill & sat down for a few minutes. I seem ok now, but it was pretty weird. I was running pretty hard today & didn''t feel like I was breathing normally, but I was trying to push through it. I should have listened to my body
38.gif
.

I''m going to get a good nights rest today & head back to the gym tomorrow & see how I feel. If this becomes a regular occurrance, I''ll have to make a trip to the doctor.

Keep up the good work!

momentus day! I actually got FI to go to the gym with me!!

So now I can add another 1.5 hours to my aerobic activity. Yay!

I''ve been so bad since July 4. I''ve been keeping up with my workouts, I managed to get in three workouts last week, but this week, everything is may just be shot to hell. I ate 7 or 8 Oreos with milk last night, and today, I ate 3 potstickers for breakfast. For lunch, I ate 12 strawberry Newton cookies and two minibags of microwave popcorn. For a snack, I ate another bag of popcorn and half a cantaloupe. For dinner, I went to my parents and had stir fry beef and with pasta. Then I ate some dessert high in sugar and fat.

But I did do a cardio routine today, it''s a new class that I''m trying out. I''m also trying to justify my really bad eating habits by telling myself that it''s just my hormones going really crazy this month (I get my period next week), and this month, the urge to overeat is overwhelming.

Hopefully, I can get back on track tomorrow. I''ll be attending a kickboxing bag workout class, and if I can stay to my usual daily diet, I''ll be fine.

And my basal metabolic rate is 1466, though I''ve really overshot everything today. Ugh. Stupid hormones.

honestly eleguin, i don''t know that you CAN maintain that kind of diet that you have yourself on..it doesn''t sound very fun at all for a long term thing. i''m so not that disciplined with stuff but i also don''t feel like i need to lose 20 lbs ASAP either. i don''t mind doing it more gradually. also, you have been losing, but when you want to maintain, not continue to lose, you should change gears a bit. so it may be time to start maintaining rather than continuing to lose? you''d probably be okay with eating a little bit more. we love eating as well so it''s hard to temper that with trying to be healthy as well but we try to find a balance.

cinderella, you are a bad bad girl, oreos?! hehee. but i know what you mean, around that time of the month...it all goes in!!

i went to kickboxing class last nite and we had coconut crusted tilapia and salad for dinner along with the leftover crab bisque (but i only had a few bites, hee hee)...this morning i am going to walk 1m after breakfast (kashi blueberry oat flakes mixed with honey bunches of oats w/strawberries) and then we''ll walk tonite after dinner as well (and maybe one more before if i can get it in).

in my class last nite i was late and the only spot left was near the front near the mirrors which i hate...but interestingly enough i looked pretty good in the mirror, hahaa. i was like hmmm maybe i should hang out by the mirror more often.

oh random thought, i tried those 100 calorie pack snack things, i got the peanut butter crisps which were actually quite tasty but i could see how they could become addictive. i may stick to my kashi granola bar thangs which are 130 calories and have way more healthy nutrients in them than these things (corn syrup yikes!) but it''s nice to know the crisps are there if i ever feel desperate for something kinda bad. hehee.

Well, I haven''t gotten back into the routine like I wanted. Oh well, hopefully I will be able to run tonight. If I don''t get into it soon, I won''t be running the half-marathon. Plus I still have weight to lose! I also want to start weight training again, so hopefully I''ll feel up to all of that tonight.

It sounds like everyone else slacked over the 4th of July too, so I don''t feel so bad.

By the way, eleguin, it sounds like you may be a little underweight for your height. I was 105 pounds at 5''2" a few years ago, and I was very thin. So, I don''t think you have to worry about gaining a couple of pounds, in fact it may even be a good idea.
