I am sure this question is not black and white (as it probably depends on the individual person)...but, does losing weight change your ring size on average? If so:

1. Typically how much weight (on average) does it take to affect your fingers? 50, 100, 200 lbs and etc
2. Is the hand one of the body parts that is the last to shrink?
3. If the ring size has to be reduced, do they cut some of the gold out of the band?

I know this question may sound wierd but...well, I am just interested

My own weight could fluctuate 30 lbs and not change my ring size. But, If I''m walking/jogging with my hands down at my sides, my size could go up 1 whole size in one day. I really think it''s what YOUR body does personally. As far as sizing, there are different ways.

Some places heat and stretch the gold (if this is done for a large step up, it can look iccky!). Obviously not so good on white gold, but they can be redipped in rhodium. Some places cut and gold added and then sanded (usually for big increments). Platinum is very hard (expensive) to size. Not everyone will size platinum. If it''s a tiny size up (1/8) the ring can be pushed down on the mandrel with a hammer (usually rubber to avoid marring). Some jewelers can go up a half size or more with this method. To size down, usually two cuts are made, metal is removed, and then resoldered. Then it''s just sanded back into shape. Then they are just buffed, rouged and polished. The inside receives the final treatments, too. Most good jewelers can size without showing where the procedure was done on the ring.

I''m not real good with diamond knowledge, but I am pretty good with the metal work. I used to work at Jostens. They do a lot of rings (mostly superbowl stuff, and sports rings). I was only in the office area, but really interesting to see. If I knew then what I know now, i would have taken advantage of the connections for a huge diamond ring!

Okay, then, Bye!

OOH! Look! Something Shiny!

I think that how much your ring size changes when losing or gaining weight is totally individual. However, I would imagine that how you lose the weight might have an effect - i.e. if you are reducing or increasing your body fat significantly, it might have a bigger effect. From my own recent experience, I''ve just lost 40 lbs and added a fair amount of muscle, and my ring size went from about a 6.75 to a 5 or a 5.25, so about a size and a half, give or take. But I also lost a fair amount of body fat. I''m having my engagement ring re-sized soon and I''m sure I''ll post back on here about the experience!

My weight goes up and down, however when I hit a certain age, my weight just ballooned. Before I became engaged, I lost 30lbs. My rings were sized at 6.25. Since then, my weight''s gone back up. The 30lbs is back, and then some. (and by *some* I mean a LOT)... My rings still fit, but they''re tight. (If I had any water retention at all, they didn''t want to come off, but otherwise, just snug)

My rings are at the jewelers now as we are upgrading the center stone and when she saw how snug they had become, she suggested I let them resize them. I am in the process of trying to get the weight issue back in control but as you get older, weight gain just seems to be a fact of life, so I decided to just have it done. I can always take them down a size too if I''m sucessful. We are going up to a 7. So, my increase was 3/4''s of a size.

I was a little concerned about it, Mine''s platinum, but I was told they do it all the time, they just add a little more to metal to it and I won''t be able to tell the difference. Hope so!

I lost 30-40 pounds last year and my ring size went down as well. Probably about 1 size but I think it just depends on the person.

I go up and down in weight depending on work conditions (I'm a stress eater). I bought a ring online in size 6 (my usual) 3 months ago and was suprised how tight it was. So I got on a scale and realized that I gained 10 lbs. I'm back to my baseline weight now and the ring is just right - not tight, comfortable on and off. If I didn't lose the weight, I would've probably sized up 1/2. As I look at the other posts, it seems that each 10lbs is about 1/4 to 1/2 size depending on your body.

It''s definitely very individual. At one point I gained a little bit, went overborad trying to lose it, and lost 40 lbs. My ring size only changed about 1/2 a size or less.

I''ve been losing weight steadily for two years now - slowly! At first, it didn''t affect my ring size at all, in fact even when I had lost 28lbs at one stage, my rings actually felt tighter. Then suddenly, they literally fell off my hand at around a loss of 15% of my original body weight. My wedding set is platinum and I''m not sure how many times I want to have it worked on, so the rings are in the safe for now, until I hit my goal weight (23rd Feb 08, if my average monthly loss stays constant, not that I''m obsessing about this LOL). I had a lot of weight to lose, and some more still to shift, but the change in my finger size wasn''t gradual, for some reason.

Well, I lost 20 lbs about four years ago and my ring size went down only by .25 because my knuckles are big! lol My rings are slightly loose on my finger, but I wouldn''t be able to fit them over my knuckle if I had them sized any smaller.

I think everyone is different in this area. I gained and then lost 35 - 40 pounds twice in 3 years (2 babies

) and my rings got tight the first time but not the 2nd time......My main experience with weight gain/loss is pertaining to my own and my friends'' pregnancies---Many of my friends have been able to keep wearing their rings no problem and some can''t put them on after just a relatively small weight gain---15 pounds or so.
