Hi,

Hope you're all doing well!

In the search of my engagement ring I stumbled upon this unique cut. It has theh shape of a radiant, with a crown of an emerald and a pavilion of a brilliant.

i don't have much additional information yet but it has peaked my interest. Is this a miscut diamond? It looks like they tried something and it worked out fine in the end.

Anything else that I should pay attention to?

THank you!

very pretty! not sure what cut is this though? Did u ask for an ASET image?

It appears to be a H&A style radiant with 8 mains (arrows). I think it is leaky, if I go by what I see in the photos. Could be because the diamond tilted.

They don't do that here (Antwerp) unfortunately for GIA diamonds, maybe for stones that are bigger. But I agree it looks pretty nice!

Not actually "weird". We see these every now and then on James Allen. They tend to have better light return than the average
radiant and I like them. Without an Aset hard to tell if it is returning light well though.

Here is an 8-main but has a top more like brilliant-cut and not an emerald.

Here is a poorly cut 8 main more like the one you posted (with the emerald pavilion). This one is leaky (with plenty of inclusions).

It's an H/VS1 (IGI) priced at €3690 for 0.9ct

Honestly, I love it... @flyingpig : with leakage you mean the black centre? We're going to look at it tomorrow, will keep you posted!

Oooooof the inclusions on the last one... So you mean this one is also poorly cut? The price difference is crazy!

I've never heard of a square radiant... but that is such an intriguing cut! Not something I'd want for an engagement ring or wedding band, but I could definitely see wanting one for a fun ring design project!

I hope the one you are looking at looks just as nice in-person when you go to see it tomorrow!

No. Not the black centre.
Leakage is the circle of glassiness around the centre.
The video confirms it is leaky.
It looks not as bad as thr one @tyty333 posted, because of the fatter arrows. But in terms of light return and leakage, it is close

No, you/I cant infer that the one you posted is badly cut because of the fact that the one I posted is badly cut. They each
have to be evaluated on their own merits.

However, I do agree with @flyingpig about the circle of leakage around the edge of the table with the stone you are looking at.

Much appreciated all! We'll have a look at it tomorrow. I just don't want to pay that much for a badly cut diamond or one that is see through. So to be continued...

The diamond having noticeable leakage does not necesarilly mean it is bad looking, especially for a fancy shape.
It has chunky and attractive faceting. Of course, it would be even better if the diamond had less leakage.

I have a chance to see one in real life:

Wow just seen the video... It is seriously pretty. Do u have a report or specifications of this diamond? Can mask the report number before u upload.

I love a nice square cut radiant! They're so unique. The price on your stone seems a bit high to me; I'll bet you could find something better online with more bang for your buck.

I have a square radiant cut. It used to be called Princess of hearts. If you search you can find them discussed here on PS. Mine is brilliant and sparkly. It is a h&a cut and my stone is a crazy good performer on idealscope and aset. Also IRL.

I’m sure the others with more experience have more to offer on the performance of the stone you posted, but I will way seeing it in person should answer your questions.

With that said, I will say that mine has a glassy effect, at some angles, because it is a deep cut stone. When looking through the table, with the stone tilted in just the right way, you can tell the depth. But the facets on the pavilion also turn ‘on’ and the sparkles fill the ‘void’. My stone is set fairly high and I get to see all the inner sparkles as well as those that are projected out of the stone. After more than 10 years - it’s still my favorite performer!

I hope the one you are going to see is equally beautiful. It’s a fun cut!

Not yet we're going to look at it in a few hours, it's an IGI certificate. I will upload it once I have it with the ASET too

It's crazy because I was looking for something unique and thought emerald was it but I never saw one that really peaked my interest. I usually don't like sparkle or bling but this stone is different. Agree about the price, usually there is quite some negotiation room. What would you say is a fair price?

If I remember correctly the 0.9c K vs1 was around 2.5k usd... The aset images were the ones I posted above.

I am looking at unquite cuts too.. The one u have fit my bill. Very unusual n pretty!

If I were to buy this they would still have a 1.35 available too, but you'll have to come to Antwerp

Thanks! This is an H though so we'll try for 3k I think... have you find any other unusual cuts yourself?

I think the diamond u r keen in looks somewhat similar to the diamond in the above link?

Crisscut! Somehow I am obsessed with the crisscut diamonds recently.

Do share with us the aset images once you have them.

Well that was a bummer! It was beautiful intially but the leakage showed clearly in the diamond aka see through which made it quite ugly from certain angles unfortunately. We couldn't take pictures of the ring with the band for some reason and everything seemed a big secret.

The certificate for the 0.9 dated from 2016, the 1.35 from 2010! He acted as if the diamonds were brand new on the market and told us to decide quickly. Asked us all the time if we were going to decide today, with other words very pushy. For me this is reason to not buy this stone.

As far as the ASET he didn't have it, it was just the cut display on the certificate which he thought was the ASET. In the end he pulled out a ASET scope (sorry not sure how those are called haha) and we saw a loooot of black areas.

Beautiful stone, but rude sellers and way too high set in price. So a no from me unfortunately.

Besides that he charged us €4950 with a simple white gold band (super thin). How can the thinnest white gold band be €1400? Shame really!

Wish I could have blown you all away with this beauty

PS: the other jeweler showed us pictures of the emeralds he has but they looked horrible in the pictures. We wanted to give him a chance until we saw he had no mask on during a consultation.

oh dear...don't give up! Yes, wayyyy too expensive ! What a bummer! :(

I hope the rude seller did not turn u off in your quest for your special stone.

There are a couple of similar or same cuts in James Allen, why not take a look? Some might have ASET images too, you just need to check with the virtual assistants. However, I would NOT recommend to purchase your ring settings from James Allen though.

Can you easily purchase from Bluenile? I know they have a site somewhere in Europe (where some countries
dont have to pay import taxes but not sure about Antwerp). You can set the Ships to: Belgium

Might be worth a try.

Thanks everyone! We've decided on an emerald! We finally found a perfect stone (in my eyes :)). E/VVS1/0.8 (faint fluorescence), we need to decide today though as she took the diamond as a 'loan' and it's currently priced at €3760. Tomorrow the prices might go up or down so we can wait but it's a risk. 20210204_152008.jpg20210204_152001.jpg

Wow, I don't know much about diamonds, but to me that looks like a real winner! Absolutely stunning!! :)) And hey, if it makes you smile every time you lay your eyes upon it, I think that's a good indication that this stone is the one for you!

I like that stone much better than the one you initially posted. I still think you can generally find better prices online, but there's nothing like being able to see/compare diamonds in person. Good call in ditching the sketchy vendor! Hope you settle on something that makes you happy every time you look at it.

Congratulations - wear it in good health!

Totally true! But with emerald it's difficult to judge the stone just from a certificate or the images. But yeah next ring will definitely be ordered online!

We also asked the person we ordered the ring from now if it's dodgy that the certificates for those diamonds dated from 2010 and 2016 and she agreed. She said that if they are indeed unique and decent diamonds they wouldn't have been around on the market for hat long. Also, IGI certificates expire after 10 years so technically the 1.35 didn't even have a valid report anymore.

Ohwell, it was an experience, we learned from it and it all turned out very well! Thank you again everyone!
