What color do you think this diamond is?

This pear was an ebay find. It was listed as yellow orange. At first glance it looks deep reddish brown, but upon closer inspection it has more of an orange hue to it. I've shown it here next to my fancy vivid orange yellow heart and fancy intense yellow for comparison. Anyone have any guesses before I send it to GIA to get an answer?

Orangy brown?

Love your avatar pic, btw!

Thank you periwinkle girl. I need to get a new shot of all of my stones together. I think I'm up to a dozen now.

Is the background white material in real life?
If so I white balanced the pic.

Even if the white balance brings the color more true to life we can't judge color by pics for all those reasons repeated ad nauseam here.

But what the heck?!
Even though I'm usually way off on yellows/brown/oranges, I'll guess guess the pear is a pinkish, brownish orange.

Yes, it really is white and I'm no good at color correction. If we are all wrong, it'll further prove your point that it's impossible to judge from a picture.

brown-orange-yellow. Brownish cognac?

I miserable that the color game, but that's what I see too.

Hi,

fancy deep Orange brown.

Annette

I mailed the stone to New York's GIA office this morning, but it's going to be a while before we have an answer because the current turnaround posted on their website is 20-25 days. My official guess is fancy deep brownish orange. I made my guess based on comparing the stone to photos on the internet, so I wouldn't put too much stake in it. I'll come back and let everyone know.

When it comes back, can you let us know the results and the name of the vendor?

Yes, absolutely I will.

Typically these are called cognac diamonds i.e. brown with a hint of orange. Pretty!

I would say orangish brown. If you are lucky, then brownish orange. This is one of the few cases where I love brown in a stone. In diamonds especially if its orangish brown, they look so rich - so, well, saturated!

FWIW, GIA never uses the marketing terms Cognac, Champagne, or Chocolate when grading FCDs.

Now pass that champagne and chocolate. :lickout:
You can keep the Cognac. :knockout:

I agree. I normally avoid brown too, but there's something about this stone that I love.

thats a really pretty find. I would guess at orangey brown.

When do you plan on sending it to GIA?

I already sent it on Saturday. It should arrive today.

Deep orangish brown or some version of it. Guess we won't know until next month.

Kenny - I do know that! Interestingly, Leibish have a category called "Champagne Diamonds" on their website!

I was demonstrating that typically you can find these in quite a few places and typically they'll not be sold with the GIA grading but more commonly you'll see romantic terms such as "champagne", "cognac", "chocolate" etc. Whatever term, they're not expensive AND unfortunately are now being irradiated to get that colour (which is something relatively new :nono: ). I actually think the descriptor cognac suits this diamond very well as it has the warm honey gold tones - something that lots of brown diamonds don't have. It's my favourite colour of brown. Mine was designated Fancy Deep Orangey Brown which is what I think this one will be also.

The results are in....

Weight: 0.20
Color: Fancy Deep Brownish Orange, Natural Even
Clarity: I2

Table: 62%

Compared to vendor description:
Shape: Pear
Dimensions: 4.3X3.6X2.5
Weight: 0.20
Color: Yellow Orange
Clarity: SI2

The ebay seller is bid4desire

Apparently I am a good judge of color, but a bad judge of clarity. I wasn't expecting the horrific clarity grade. I guess a deep color can hide a lot. It turns out it's got every defect on the list: Feather, Indented Natural, Chip, Needle, Natural, Extra Facet. I paid $68.00 for the stone including shipping, so it's no big loss. Plus, I still love it for the color :)
