What color stone for this mounting?

I'm in a place where I have to sell all but my most loved pieces. This means I'm looking to sell my new spessartite ring. Since, at this point, I haven't had any interest in the entire ring, I'm strongly considering removing the stone and selling it separately. I think the mounting is too specific to have much appeal out there.

So, if I remove it, what should I put in its place? Since the sales are for financial reasons I can't spend much money, nor do I want anything in the pink or red family.

The current stone is a cushion that measures 8.4 x 8.4 mm. I don't think there is much leeway in size, but shape could be about anything that has a similar length/width ratio.

I'm sorry for your troubles and I hope they will pass quickly. As soon as I looked at this - all I could think of was green. Beautiful mounting! :love:
 
What would a tsavorite or chrome tourmaline set me back?
 
I think I'd really like a blue zircon. This would be a rarely worn ring and I think the bright caribbean blue would be so cool.
 
jbk, thanks for your search! More eyes (and brain matter) give me a better chance of finding something.

The first stone you linked is too dark. As for the peridot and this last tourmaline have more yellow than would look good on me. If green, it needs to be true green or even with a touch of blue to it. I'd prefer bright, but highly saturated, to pale or dark. Does that make any sense?
 
I vote for tanzanite. gold and blue go well together, and tanzanite is also affordable.
 
I like the idea of tanzanite. How pricey would it be to get an intensely colored stone?
 
I think the most cost-effective, yet STUNNING stone would be a chrome tourmaline. I just see GREEN being gorgeous in that mounting. Yes, some CTs can get too dark, so it might take awhile to find a good one, but man would it be amazing once you did.

A really nice peridot could also be very pretty; maybe even a good amethyst?

edited to add that I'm sorry for your circumstances and hope things improve for you soon. I wish your Mahenge would have been listed a couple of months ago before I bought my tsavorite and went in that direction. I would have chosen your Mahenge ring instead!!
 
This is heretical, Uppy, but what if you just sold the setting? Does it need to have a stone in it? It's just beautiful in itself! You spend the $$ on something new for it & that still may not be what a buyer who loves the setting wants to pay additional for. How about offering it as is & let the purchaser put her own stone in it?

Oh, I'm so sorry, Uppy. :(sad I do hope things will pick up for you soon. It's a bummer to have to sell that lovely Adzia ring. Before doing anything else, I would list it as a whole item priced to move quickly as added incentive. If there no takers, then I would sell the stone and setting separately without adding a replacement for the now empty setting. Geez...actually, I might consider your setting myself too as I like 18kt yellow gold with organic swirls. :naughty:

LOVE this idea. And that might be around 3 carats or so in a zircon - idk but I've been looking for a two carat round one FOREVER and there don't seem to be many smaller sizes - even two-carat-not-rounds.

I agree with all the recommendations on selling the stone and empty setting separately. That way, the prospective buyer can set it with whatever stone they choose (including a diamond - personally, I would love to see a white or champagne stone in that setting). That might also mean a quicker sale since you don't have to go through the effort and expense of sourcing another stone and getting it reset, etc.

You guys have made some really good points. I've already had an offer on the stone, so I think I will have it removed and then sell the mounting separately. I really hope it ends up with someone who really loves the unique look of the ring!
 
I would either sell the setting without a stone or put a CZ in it (to keep costs down). Honestly though, I don't think you need to get it set with something, just sell the empty setting on its own. It's a beautiful ring, I had my eyes on it but I wear a 5.75.

If it fits a 8.4/8.5mm cushion stone, could it fit a 8.8mm round stone? I always get confused on how that works...
 
It might fit a round if the buyer is not fussed about being able to see the basket underneath from the top view at times.
 
Size of stone is based on the diameter of the stone. I tried my best to measure from prong to prong, and it looks close to 10mm. Based on the current angling of the prongs I think it would hold a stone from high 8's to 10. What do you think Chrono?
 
Are you measuring diagonally or the usual L x W?
Did you use calipers (more precise) or a ruler?

I'd just like to say that ring and the mounting is beautiful. I would have snapped it up but it'd need to be sized to a 4 :(( .. but one day I might use this as an inspiration ring. I think it goes perfectly with that stone.
 
Uppy I think the idea of an amethyst would likely look amazing and be your most affordable option. Since you can find a high quality stone for less than $100 in that size. Or tanzanite which is cheaper than other blue stones.

Sorry you are having to figure this out.
 
What about beautiful pearl, coral, jade, lapis or persian turquoise?
 
Uppy -- would a 9X8 cushion fit? would it look bizarre for it not to be square? i have a silky, deep-green sapphire (on the dark side) that goes yellow on the long edges that might look good in this setting. that stone has been langusihing a long time. plus i may need something bigger in the next few months as my preggo fingers swell beyond what my 6.25 e-ring can accommodate.
 
I really think it would. Because of the shape of the head and the softer nature of 18k gold a good (and I would be particular) jeweler shouldn't have a problem.
 
It may be difficult for a jeweler to reset a stone with the fine workmanship that she did on the prongs. I would sell the ring as a whole since you're likely to recoup more money that way since it is a precision cut cushion gem (cushions are hot sellers) in a custom designed piece. The whole ring flows very beautifully together. It may take eons to find the right stone for this setting. I've been looking for a 8x8 cushion for a setting for ages.
