Hello all,

My brother is thinking about proposing to his girlfriend and will be using our great-grandmother's engagement ring. The current plan is to reset the center stone and use the side stones to make a wedding band. Our grandmother, who currently wears the ring, is thrilled with this idea. I kind of love the setting as-is, but based on my brother's girlfriend's Pinterest, we're thinking that she might love a halo setting more. I think my brother is trying to feel her out on settings at the moment to see if she would like the ring as-is or reset.

Unfortunately, my mom only snapped two pictures of the ring, but I was hoping some of our cut experts could help me figure out how the center stone is cut based on the first picture. (Transitional? OEC? Just a regular RB? I dunno!) My great-grandmother got engaged in 1925. She later added the side stones (not sure when). My mom says that the diamond is about 1ct.

Now on to settings, in case my brother decides to reset the diamond. From my brother's girlfriend's Pinterest, she seems to like settings that have a vintage feel. She has pinned a number of halos. My brother and mother went to our local jeweler yesterday, and my mom sent me two setting options. The top setting is $2700 and the bottom setting is $800. I think Pricescope can do *much* better for my brother and his girlfriend. The jeweler told my brother to look around on the Internet and I think they will try to order a setting for him if he finds one he likes.

I guess my brother could go up to $3k, but I think something in the $1k to $2k range would be more comfortable. What settings would you recommend for a stone like this?

Is it a transitional cut (tranny). Looks to have a bigger table with a lower crown angle but the faceting pattern doesnt
look right for a tranny. Hmmm, not sure.

If you look on this thread all the way to the last post on the first page (by strmrdr...aka Karl)you will see the faceting
pattern on a tranny and may be able to tell whether thats it or not.

Edit - you might also look at some beverly K settings for halo...they have a pretty nice selection.

Thanks for the suggestions! Beverly K seems pretty spot on.

The original vintage setting is quite striking!

Why doesn't he propose with the ring as-is and then let her pick out a new setting if she wants one?

If the stone's performance needs refreshing, I think singlestone does polishes and gentle re-cuts of older stones to enhance light performance http://www.singlestone.com/
