What do you prefer: chubby pear or skinny pear?

Thank you for weighing in, Karl! In your opinion, is it easier to find a well-cut chubbier pear than a skinnier one?

That will vary with time and market, but it is much easier to cut a yummy pear on the chubby side compared to cutting a long skinny yummy pear.

On further thought, I realised I could use diamdb to do more of an apples to apples comparison. I picked 3 random 3.5ct pears from blue nile, with the ratio 1.35, 1.55 and 1.75 respectively. Their depths all differ but they all were “adequate” face up so I guess it’s fine for comparison.


To my eye, the 1.55 looks the best with her finger size (I’ve gone with 60mm finger length and size 6 - it wouldn’t let me make the finger shorter for some reason).

What do you all think? Also, interestingly, there is a 2.24mm difference length wise between the 1.35 ratio and 1.75 ratio (11.8 vs 14.04 mm), but barely a 0.57mm difference width wise between the two (8.77 vs 8.2). The face up difference between the two is 14% (but some of that is coming from the differing depths… I guess I should have controlled for that too).

Based on this alone, I too prefer the 1.55 in the middle.

If and when I decide to get a heart-shaped stone to add to my RHR collection, I shall start a shape preference thread for fun!

Another vote for chubby pears!! But I do agree with previous posts on taking ring design and finger size into consideration when choosing a pear shape ratio.

Your ring is beautiful! 1.62 is tending towards skinny but still close to the mid-sweet spot. It does look lovely on your hand.

I have fallen in love with chubby pears recently, I have quite ‘fleshy’ fingers and was surprised how much I liked it.

If it helps this is a 1.48ct antique pear on a size 6 finger. I don’t know the ratio though but imagine it’s on the lower side.

I like how the chubby pear looks on your finger. It seems proportional.

I told my friend that a 1.45-1.6 ratio is probably best, ideally 1.5-1.55. He’s taken that into advisement and has begun the search. Thank you everyone!

my finger size is about 5.5 to 6, but i have short fingers. I have brittle nails so i cut them really short (i always envy folks with beautiful manicure but they don't last on me), in other words, i think an elongated pear (or oval) would make fingers look longer and more elegant. Anyhow, i like ratio of 1.7 to 1.8 but a good elongated pear are hard to find without much bow ties. My dream is to own a moi and toi with pear and heart diamonds. Hopefully some day.....

Your finger sounds similar to hers! He definitely wants an elongated stone, but she isn’t open to ovals so I think it will end up being a pear only. Best of luck on your moi et toi, it sounds gorgeous
