What do you think about the craftmanship of this ring?

Hi all,

My Fiance and I had the engagement ring below custom made. She recently picked it up and I have not seen it yet as I am away with work. My question is, what do you think about the craftmanship of the ring? To me it looks pretty amatuer. The first photo is of our ring and the second photo is a picture of the ring we ordered.

I am concerned about the claws, the gold looks lumpy and uneven.
This is really the first ring I've purchased and I am wondering if I am just being fussy, maybe the photos on the websites are always photo shopped or handmade rings always have this look to them.

Thanks in advance for your help,

You are right. The struts that connect the head to the shank are uneven and lumpy. The prongs are not polished on the inside and the edges are not crisp. I cant tell if the vendor photo is a cad image or not but personally I would expect the product to look at least as good as the picture.
Where did you get the ring? I personally would go back and ask the jeweler what's up.

There definitely is a discrepancy between the photo you were given and the ring you received. I agree, go back to the vendor and explain the differences you see and ask them what happened. Hopefully it works out.

I'd return it tell them you arw unhappy. End of story. It is not well executed and you are unhappy. The quality is not up to the standards of the photos they showed you so they aren't living up tp their end of the bargon.

Are you able to refund it? Or are you going to have to put up a fight. I've seen people on here get refunds on non refundable s. You just have to be willing to make a stink and prove that it didn't meet up to what was agreed upon.

If you can refund it ja makes a strikingly similar ring and I'm sure the quality would be better.

I was in a almost exact situation a few months back. Its uncomfortable to bring up but better than letting them misrepresent their skills and take your money when you aren't satisfied. :) good luck. Keep us posted

Also dont let them try and just redo it. If they could redo it it would have been correct the first time

That's definitely not acceptable!

Agree

Start by talking nicely to your jeweler about it. Most of what I see in the picture is a matter of finishing work and it's a fairly straightforward process to finish it up but it would be really helpful to get together with them and go over it with the proverbial fine tooth comb and see both what you have problems with and what they say they can and can't do about it. Some things will be easy, some may be fairly difficult.

You describe this ring as 'custom ordered' but supplied a photo of a sample. Is that a ring made by someone else that was being copied by your guys or is this a production design for them that you ordered and had set with your stone? That is to say, was that sample ring in the picture made by them to show what they're selling or was it provided by you as a model for what you wanted?

It looks wonky and lumpy to me. I would see if you can get a refund. I love the setting that nielseel suggested.

Thanks everybody for the help.

We have 30 days to return the ring, I will see it next weekend so I will make a D then.
My Fiance says that she really likes the setting so I am hoping that when I see it in person alot of the problems I am seeing in the photo will not be apparent (Maybe just the light it was taken in......probably wishful thinking).

denverappraiser,

I guess custom ordered was the wrong term. The 2nd photo I supplied was the sample ring on their website.

The fact that my Fiance likes it so much made me wonder if I should take it back or just leave it (After all, the aim is to make her happy) but I think I will probably discuss it with them, thanks everyone for the advice.

It doesn't look as fine or "silky" and the photo. Good luck!

The ring you received is decicedly not of the same quality as the sample in the other photo and they will not be able to get it up to that standard without replacing the whole piece. Whether or not there's a compromise that will work for you is up to you but I would definitely start with a conversation about it. Soon would be good.

Agree it looks like they forgot to sand the inside curves they look unfinished so sorry

You're definitely not being fussy. The whole ring looks poorly made and should be re-done. I know that your fiance loves it, but I would be concerned about the integrity of the ring long-term.

Agreed. Plus its not an uncommon design. You could get a very similar ring that I'm sure she would llove, possibly more because its more well made

Becoming engaged is a very exciting time and we tend to fall in love with our rings instantly and never ever want to take them off. However, I wonder if after the initial excitement wears off if your fiance will also start to notice some of the workmanship issues and become less satisfied. It's important that she realize that you only have 30 days to address the issues and that it would be much easier and less costly to do it now than to have to replace the setting at your expense in the future. I'm sure that she wants her ring to be perfect, it's just really hard for us to part with, (even if only for a short time) once we have them on our finger! ;))
