Hi everyone,

I'm looking for opinions on this RB diamond for e-ring.

I'm worried about the I1 clarity... Do you think it's going to be very visible to naked eyes? The clarity characteristics on the certificate says "feather finish". Does clarity affect the overall brilliance?

Here is the stone I'm looking:

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/Round-cut/0.70-carat-F-color-I1-clarity-Excellent-cut-sku-187797

Carat weight: 0.70
Shape: Round Brilliant
Color: F
Clarity: I1
Cut: Excellent
Polish:Excellent
Symmetry:Excellent
Depth %: 61.90
Table %: 57.00
Crown angle: 35.00
Pavilion angle: 40.80
Culet: NN
Girdle: Medium-Slightly Thick
Fluorescence: None
L/W/D: 5.70 x 5.67 x 3.52
Certificate: GIA

Do you think I should avoid it, or is it not too bad diamond for I1 clarity?

For the setting, I'm thinking a simple platinum six-prong Tiffany style solitaire.
Any advice will help!

My opinion cannot be given until I know why you want an F colored diamond. If it is culturally or personally significant to you, so be it - you need a high color. If not, F is sort of overkill. You can drop down to G/H/I, still have a white stone, and jump up to the SI clarity range so you don't have to worry about visible inclusions for no extra money.

That being said, if you want a high color, I personally think this is a nice stone for an I1. That inclusion type and placement would not bother me. I suspect it would be 'eye clean' from a pretty decent distance, only being seen on close inspection.

Just ask the JA rep what they have to say about it. They will tell you from what (approx) distance the inclusion can be spotted and you have to decide if it is within your tolerance level. :))

Thank you so much for your opinion. Unfortunately, when I looked at the diamond again to purchase it, I found it was sold out :(( I was so sad because I really liked this one. I guess this diamond wasn't meant to be mine...

Whenever you ask for an opinion on a stone here, make sure you put it on hold first. It is not unusual for lurkers to snatch a stone that has been posted here and receives positive reviews. I don't know if that happened in this case, but just so you know when you find the next possibility and want to receive feedback - reserve it first. :))

+1 Also, as a general rule, you want to stay away from stones that have a feather near the girdle as it may cause the stone structural issues. Either way, you want to insure your ring as soon as it's done, but avoid inclusions that are that close to the edge of the stone. I LOVE a good find on an I1 stone because it can be a great deal especially if the inclusions are paced properly. Are you still looking? What's your budget? I'm also curious why you want an F colored stone. You can go G/H on a .70ish stone and it'll still look white.

I think it's fine it went to someone else; I'd really try not to get I1, like another poster said, go down a bit in color.

Am I the only one, or is this new James Allen setup lacking in information that used to be readily available? There is no IS or ASET image on anything. The GIA stones I've looked at have only a GIA Dossier, not a complete report with inclusions plotted, and when I go to the GIA report verification site, all I can get there is the same little GIA Dossier.

My opinion: Look at Whiteflash, Good Old Gold, and Brian Gavin merchandise, instead. WinkJones.com, too. And anyone else that offers the consumer the standard evaluation tools. The JA revolving diamond is a nice fluffy ADDITION TO the information that their old setup used to provide, but it's not an appropriate substitute for a conventional report and IS / ASET and all. I even went back and looked later to see if perhaps JA had added that information to the stone listing later, but no. I think their intention is to offer "value" stones by showing how good they look. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But I want to see complete information so that I can truly comparison-shop.

Oh, and I would absolutely consider an I1 or not totally clean SI2. Over the years, I have gotten less picky about that. Cut and color are seen from across the room. And size, of course. But after a while, I found that I really didn't care so much about clarity. A diamond ring is never totally clean except for the first 30 seconds after I put it on my hand. I'd rather have size/cut/color with one or two specks, provided they hide pretty well most of the time. I have owned or still own diamonds with color E/F down to M. Higher color flashes whiter, and I think that whiter helps with the perception of size. So, if looking at diamonds <1ct, don't go lower than H or a high I. (But I is the narrowest color band, anyhow. Not much difference between "High I' and "Low I" due to some oddity of how GIA defined I color range. But with J, there might be a significant visual difference between a high J and a low J. As you go lower in the color scale, the grades have a larger spread. The colorless and near-colorless D-I are smaller grades. You can research that on here someplace. But that's what I recall from memory.)

in general, dossier for stones < 1 carat. Full report for stones > 1 carat.

Re: What do you think of this I1 diamond? 0.70 ct F I1 Ex Cu

i never noticed that before. I usually gravitate toward AGS graded diamonds, lol. But before I made my comment about JA, I looked at some stones between 1ct and 1.25ct, and they are only dossier.

I completely disagree with this. JA provides everything a customer would ask, it just has to be put on hold and requested which is no different than the other vendors. If the stone is an H&A, then YES the idealscope is already on their site as well as the AGS report. WF and others have mostly H&A stones, so that's what's posted. With WF, they don't have the non H&A stones available since they're not in house, you have to request them be sent in and pay either $200 or $300 just to have them sent in to be looked at! I'm pretty sure a few other vendors do this as well. JA doesn't charge a premium for anything requested. AND - they're still getting everything on their site organized. They're an awesome vendor who IMO is far more advanced than other vendors. AND if video is "just fluff", why is no one else doing it?!?
