What do you think of this included alexandrite?

The only thing I will add a comment on here is that there’s no reason to suspect that’s not David himself speaking. In every message, he signs off with his name. It reads like a busy person typing on his phone. I write professionally and I make terrible typos all the time when I’m on the go.

That is fair! Maybe many years ago, he didn't use his smartphone as much. I use mine way more than I used to. What do you think of the rest of it? That the stone is so fragile that only a good cutter who doesn't use heat won't break it?

I feel like he sounds like a reasonable person who thinks the stone won’t break but he’s not going to 200% double down since random things can happen. My jeweller once had her Grade A jade bangle break for no reason without any physical impact (then she found out her grandma died the same day).

Personally I won’t press any vendor or setter into guaranteeing me a refund if they chip the stone. I make a judgement about whether to trust the person and then I go in good faith. The reason why I suggest a vendor to set an imperfect stone in this scenario is that they are more likely to feel responsible and be amenable to negotiation if it happens.

There are vendors who have insurance for these types of mishaps but they are probably too high end for me. And it’s also the reason many, many jewellers will not set outside stones. But all this is from someone who likes to play strictly in the <$1500 range for my projects. For a stone in this price range, I think it’s fair to ask for some kind of reassurance.

This is a helpful thread to read. Yes, it may keep you up at night and give you nightmares but the responses are pretty good and varied:

This is out of my usual context also. I paid $1200 for my wedding ring sapphire, but the next most expensive stone I bought was $200. I think the moral I am going to take here is to just ignore stones this included unless you don't care that much if they break.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Here is the conversation in context for your review. I agree that there is some vague language.

Maybe it was "I have no idea...." or "I have no way to know" with some missing words?

The rest of it seems like a native speaker, which is what I recall. Not that one needs to be a native English speaker to meet my high bar (:mrgreen2:), but my first reading out of context was that it could not be him. Now I think it could be. I'm still not crazy about the facts, though...

My response is above. He sounds kind of annoyed. I will keep ordering from him, but not coordinate setting anything. all he had to say from the beginning was that it was beautiful, but would require a gamble to set it which the price reflects.

He should have said that first paragraph in the first place and let you know that it was up to you to assume the risk if you bought the stone since it is substantially discounted. Then you would have cordially passed on the stone, no bad feelings.
