I am trying to clean my diamond ring each da y to keep it sparkling and so that it doesn't get to the point of
accumulating oils and dirt..

I am using only water to keep it gentle. I rinse it with lukewarm /warm water and then tap-it dry with a piece or 2 of toilet tissue paper.

I wonder if there is somewhere i can get a special drying paper?

I have the jewel jet, but don't want to use it every day as it's put away. I could use it on the weekends - is that too much for an antique diamond ring? (1x per week Jewel Jet?)

or

I have Connesieurs (red jar) bottle cleaner. I wonder if that is too harsh for an antique diamond?

But wondering what all the PS girls do to keep their diamonds sparkling each day
and also how they dry their stones...

Thanks :wavey:

My hair dryer works fairly well. And don't laugh, but coffee filters work also. It's a tip from How Clean is Your House? They're lint free and great to clean mirrors with.

I use paper towel and/ or air.
Toilet paper can leave little fibers. But really..... you're the only one to notice ;)

coffee filter sounds good
do u think paper towels can scratch it?

also, did u ever see jewelers dry off stones with a stiffish (not hard) paper? it's like tissue paper but not flimsy.
What is it called?

How much is too much to do the jewel jet on an antique stone, do u think?

thx girls! :wavey:

If you are concerned about hard water leaving a film do a final rinse in distilled water.

I dry mine with a few clean Q-Tips.
They can reach the entire diamond since I have a tension setting.
If I had a prong setting I'd blow the water off it with a can of compressed air.

I don't like toilet tissue, Q-tips and paper towel.

Use air or really hot water or towel specialized for computer monitors.

The best being "Shino polishing cloth".

Red section to clean sterling silver and yellow to polish all jewels really gently! I adore!

There are no products in the yellow section.

air from a spray can.

I use those little cloths that you clean eye glasses with. Works beautifully. And before I buff the stones, I blow hard on my rings to get the water out from underneath. Sounds strange but it's what I do.

Cachette :))

I just lay mine on a kleenex and then wipe any excess off the top. I really don't have a problem with fibers. It won't hurt your diamond to clean it, but it is the setting that might not be able to handle an ultrasonic, for example. But it won't hurt to put it in jewelry cleaner unless it has other stones that might not do well in it. Metal and diamonds are fine.

I too, use coffee filters. Or my micro fiber towel. When I used my blowdryer, it left water stains.

Most of the time I clean with jewelery cleaner and a little brush and dry using a blow dryer... I think I might have an addiction to cleaning my ring 8)

that's great! i'm going to use an eyeglass cloth because I know there is absolutely NO cleaning solution on those....
and they're really small. Thanks!! :appl:

Also, instead of water, how often do you clean your ring?

Did u ever try Connoseiurs? Is that too strong for weekly use?

Should I be polishing my plat setting to keep it from dulling? what about the prongs, etc? What would i use for that?

Thanks! :wavey:

I try to clean mine once a week in the cleaning solution (which is fine for weekly use) or ultrasonic. You can't really polish the platinum yourself. You might want to take it to a jeweler every year or two and have them polish it if it needs it. I just rub mine with a soft cloth to make it a shiny as possible after it had been cleaned.

Mine is cleaned 3 or 4 times a day because it only takes 30 seconds or so and comes out scrupulously, immaculately and perfectly spotless under a loupe.

Such is the joy of a tension setting.

I use coffee filters or paper towels - I scrunch a corner into a point and poke it through the "cage" of the setting covering the stone pavilion, usually gets most of the surface wiped down. Once in a whilst I'll thread a thicker yarn-type cotton string through the nooks and crannies (gently, no tugging!) for a more thorough wipe-down if something looks peculiar.

I also check my prongs at least once a week, and my rings have no small diamonds or pave, so it's easy enough to catch trouble early.

Yssie, you're a genius! I can't believe that never occurred to me ....

OP. don't worry too much about damaging your diamond by cleaning it. Connesieur's is basically just soap and water, it's fine to use every day. If your ring has white gold, avoid solutions with ammonia, but other than that? Shine away! Diamonds are definitely tough enough to stand up to paper towels and coffee filters.

:naughty:

I clean/dry mine in the steam wand of my husband's coffee machine, with a pair of long tweezers.

I clean mine once a week with a mixture of dawn, ammonia and hot water. I let it soak for a bit and then blow dry.

Thanks for the compressed air idea. I didn't even think of that one. I will be in charge of cleaning her ring. :D

I just use a paper towel on a daily basis and I use "canned air" when I wash it.

Oh oh! This is the best use of a steam wand ever! I mean, who uses that thing to froth milk? Cleaning diamonds, however...

The tissue gifts are wrapped in is suppose to work well b/c it doesn't have any lint. Usually I just use whatever shirt I'm wearing, though, because it's convenient.

That's hilarious!

I soak mine in hot water and then windex- then dry it with my hair dryer. Unless I'm in a hurry, then I use my shirt! :cheeky:

Compressed air - works like a charm! That's after it's bath in cleaner - then alcohol.

Compressed air or blow dryer is good to dry in those really hard to reach areas and inside baskets.

Would one of those cans of air to clean computers with work?

I do the same with my stones, once a week for those I wear often. Most of them are not diamonds so I can tell you it works fine with any tipe of stone :)
